ReOpening St Joseph High School Mission Statement St Joseph High School is an independent Catholic college preparatory community that educates and motivates young women and men to live purposeful lives as ethical leaders committed to the common good of all. Responding to Covid-19 The following plan has been created in order to protect the students, faculty, and staff of St Joseph High School. It has been created with careful attention to executive orders, Center for Disease Control (CDC), State of Connecticut Office of the Governor and the Town of Trumbull Department of Health guidelines. This plan is subject to change as necessary. The health and safety of our community is of paramount importance. 3 revised 8/12/20
STRONGER, TOGETHER Dear Friends, Greetings from St. Joes. I hope you are doing well and that your family has enjoyed some special and fun summer moments. Despite these unprecedented and emotionally challenging times, we must remain faithful, solution-oriented and grateful for the many blessings that surround us each day. As SJ Cadets – we must Carry On! As you know from our Virtual Town Hall Meeting, we will be reopening school on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, using a Transitional Hybrid Model. You can access the video recording of the Town Hall Meeting and the follow-up notes by clicking here. The Hybrid Model will be piloted for the first 14 days of school (September 8-25) whereby each student will be scheduled for 7 days of on-campus learning and 7 days of remote learning. We will use an alternating Maroon Day (Last Names A-L) and Gold Day (Last Names M-Z) protocol and the educational program will be delivered live each day to all students regardless of their learning location–St. Joes or at home. The strategic acquisition and implementation of wireless OWL Labs cameras will allow us to provide live daily teacher and student interaction and not compromise the highly respected value proposition of the SJ experience. Yes, school will be in session live every day for SJ students and we are excited to provide your family with this unique and forward-thinking learning opportunity. Our Hybrid Model is intended to serve as a thoughtful transition toward the full reopening of St. Joseph High School. This prudent and practical re-entry approach will allow us to safely implement our paper plan and make necessary adjustments in preparation for a successful and long-awaited return of the entire SJHS student body. It is very important for us to “work the plan” prior to a full reopening with 800 students. Education is about people and relationships. Our amazing students and outstanding faculty and staff make St. Joes a vibrant and exceptional school and, without the people, SJHS is just a building. The people make St. Joes a very special place and they always have since 1962. We are committed to making this return to school safe, enjoyable and educationally fulfilling for everyone. In closing, I look forward to meeting the students and partnering with your family to make the upcoming 2020-2021 academic year a safe and successful experience for our entire SJ community. With God’s help and guidance, we can do this. After all, we are St. Joes! In Faith and Fellowship, David J. Klein President 4
HYBRID REOPENING MODEL Overview With consideration of community feedback, and in alignment with the Center for Disease Control (CDC), State of Connecticut Office of the Governor and the Town of Trumbull Department of Health, St Joseph High School will reopen with a hybrid learning model starting September 8, 2020. Reopening school with a decreased school capacity for the first three weeks will allow the safety and flexibility needed for our faculty, staff, and students as we adjust and learn to utilize our building differently under new safety protocols. In addition to technological enhancements and sanitization measures, new personal safety standards have also been established. Social distancing, safety, health observation, and school disinfection protocols as detailed within will be adhered to as required by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Department of Health, and the Office of the Governor. The Hybrid Reopening Model features an alternating attendance schedule that will be instituted to reduce facility capacity. Students will be divided by into two groups: • Students whose last names begin with A-L will be Maroon Team • Students whose last names begin with M-Z will be Gold Team. Students are divided in this order to ensure social distancing within each classroom. When the Maroon Team attends class in person, the Gold Team will attend class virtually via OWL Labs technology and vice versa. The interacation with teachers and classmates will be live regardless of a student’s learning location - at SJHS or at home. Hybrid Academic Program All courses and all levels of courses will still be available for students in this (and all) reopening scenarios. Student schedules and the integrity of our academic program will not be negatively impacted. Students must adhere to the dress code whether they are in school or learning from home. High standards of attendance and engagement will be expected. Students will need to be on time for class and seated at an appropriate learning space if working from home. St Joseph High School will offer live, daily interaction with the faculty members and we will make sure each student still has the St Joes Experience. 5 revised 8/12/20
Plan Evaluation The hybrid plan will be continuously evaluated and enhanced as we implement the protocols during the first weeks of school. Focus groups will be conducted with faculty and staff, students, parnts, medical professionals, and Board of Health personnel to assist in the assessment and ongoing improvement of our action plan. On September 23rd, we will host another town hall meeting to determine if we will continue with our hybrid model, or if we are able to make an adjustment to this reopening scenario. We will continuously communicate the evaluation our plan to ensure the safety of our students by setting scheduled decision dates for plan review. Family Considerations Parents will be able to elect a full virtual education plan for students, allowing them to learn from home should they choose not to attend in a hybrid or full return model. Families considering this option should contact the Director of College and School Counseling to determine next steps. Transparency & Communication New information, agency guidelines, addendums or changes to this plan will be communicated to the SJ community. Should a student, faculty, or staff member test positive for Covid-19, we will inform the SJ community. We will not release the name or personal details of that individual. School Closure in the Event of COVID-19 Cases As required, we will report any student, faculty, or staff member who tests positive to the Trumbull Department of Health and the Superintendent of the Diocese of Bridgeport. We will follow the reporting, notification, and closure guidelines that the Department of Health and CDC stipulate. • The school will be thoroughly disinfected after a positive case is identified or if closure is required. SJHS administration will remain in very close contact with the Trumbull Department of Public Health. 6
Family-School Partnership (Page 19) The successful return to school is contingent upon full adherence to the safety plan detailed within. St Joseph High School administrators, faculty, staff, students and parents are asked to comply with our community pledge and code of conduct detailing transparency of communication, self-screening, quarantine and compliance with COVID-19 safety and exposure protocols. Resources including this pledge, self-screening guidance and general expectations are available on the “Come Home to Joe” webpage. 7 revised 8/12/20

Disinfecting Protocols Sanitization All cleaning and disinfecting procedures will follow the highest standards set by St Joseph High School as well as CDC guidelines. Our custodial team (which has been increased) is trained in specialized sanitization procedures and provided with all appropriate supplies to meet this goal. In addition, instructional signage will be posted to educate and ensure compliance. • The school has ordered and received masks, gloves, disinfectant, sanitizer, thermometers, and electrostatic cleaning machines. • Door handles, desks, and high contact areas will be given special attention as they will undergo consistent cleaning multiple times a day. • In addition to the mounted hand sanitizers in the hallways, there will be portable hand sanitizer stations at school entrances. Hand sanitizers will be stocked in each classroom. • Disinfectant, gloves, and paper towels will be supplied to each classroom. Teachers will direct students to disinfect their desks and chairs before and after each class. • At the lunch break each classroom will be disinfected via electrostatic cleaning. When students go to lunch, their classrooms will be “fogged.” • Each night, the crew will be sanitizing the entire school with backpack foggers (all classrooms, touchpoints, etc…). Air Quality St Joseph High School does not recycle air within the building. The exhaust system will run constantly and ensure fresh air is continually introduced. Fans will not be allowed to circulate air in the classroom. However, window fans that exhaust air out may be used. If a classroom is deemed to be too hot and unsafe, we will relocate to an alternate location or outside. Please see additional sanitization and cleaning protocols for specified areas under the Facilities heading below. 10
Personal Safety The maintainance of a safe school environment requires the partnership of all in attendance. Nurse’s Office The nurse’s office will be staffed and enhanced appropriately to address the increased need for medical oversight. Multiple isolation areas (both portable and stationary) for any student with a fever or showing symptoms of illness are available. After the student is dismissed, the area will be disinfected thoroughly according to CDC guidelines. Symptomatic students will be given specific instructions for testing and quarantine according to the directives from the Town of Trumbull Department of Health. Student absenteeism will be closely monitored for any illness trends and reported to the appropriate agencies. Personal Protective Equipment • Teachers and students are required to wear masks all day; families are unable to opt out of this requirement. • Each student will receive one SJ cloth mask at orientation that can be washed and re- used. If a student forgets their mask or requires a disposable mask, one will be made available to them. • Masks must be medically and school-appropriate. Soft color pattern, no logos or text, other than St Joes. • We will have ample opportunity for students to schedule mask breaks outside, socially distanced. Heat and mask break tents will be stragetically located on the campu. • SJ Faculty & Staff will monitor students for compliance. Any student who does not comply will be referred to the Dean of Student Life. • Faculty will have the option to use Plexiglas screens and/or face shields in addition to their masks. Microphones will be available should teachers need amplification assistance when using PPE. Temperature Checks • Students will have their temperatures checked before boarding the SJ buses. • We will take the temperature of all faculty, staff, students and any scheduled visitor each day prior to school via kiosks at the front and rear entrances of the school. • Kiosk temperature checks take approximately 3 seconds and will not delay student arrival. Kiosks will be monitored by authorized SJ personnel. Covid-19 Testing • Faculty, staff, and students are not required to get tested prior to the start of school. 11 revised 8/12/20
Arrival & Dismissal Drop off/Pick Up • Please take your student’s temperature and review self-screening questions before leaving for school in the morning • The school day will remain 7:55am - 2:15pm. • The before and after school schedule is still in development, but will feature a very structured, supervised program to ensure safety and social distancing for all. Club activities will be held from 2:15pm-2:45pm, athletic activities vary per sport and service activities vary per opportunity. • We request parents to be partners in our committment to safety. Students should arrive and leave as close to the start and end of school as possible to ensure social distancing and oversight. • The building will open at 7:15am for students who have extenuating circumstances for arrival. • Bus transportation will depart from school at 3:00pm. Prayer to Saint Joseph Be pleased, dear St Joseph, to accept this dedication we make of ourselves to thee. We dedicate ourselves wholly to thee, that thou mayest ever be our father, our patron, and our guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for us great purity of heart and a fervent devotion to the interior life. Grant that following thine example we may direct all our actions to the greater glory of God, in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and in union with thee. Finally, pray for us that we may be partakers in the peace and joy which were thine at the hour of thy holy death. Amen. Saint Joseph our Patron. Pray for us. 23 revised 8/12/20
