Spring 2017 April 27, 2017 COLORADO DRAFT HORSE http://coloradodrafthorseassn.org 2017 Big Thunder Show Review by Jack Taylor The best weather you can ask for in January was enjoyed by exhibitors and spectators for this years’ Big Thunder Draft Horse show held at The Ranch in Loveland. Exhibitors arrived early in the week to settle in, acclimate horses, and make some last minute adjustments to the equipment and horses during the week. Thirteen hitches from Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma, Michigan, Minnesota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska and Iowa came to the show. Locals like TJ and Stacie Kiefer, Enos Yoder, Terry and Ted Pratt with the Flintstone hitch and regulars like Ames Percheron Hitch were here again this year. On Thursday evening an exhibitor’s dinner was provided at which time names were drawn and hitches were connected with sponsors. In exchange for the sponsor donation each were provided their name and information on the back of a hitch wagon for the show. Anyone interested in doing this in future years should contact Abby Powell at The Ranch. Each show had a pre-show about an hour ahead of the paid performance at which time classes like Men or Ladies Cart and Team were shown. In addition on Friday evening Dennis Kuehl provided guided tours to groups who wanted a behind the scenes view. Entertainment was provided by the fast and wild turns made by the popular chuck wagon races! Leroy Leavitt did a fine job of carrying the flags again this year with his Belgian hitch for opening ceremonies. On Saturday morning prior to the pre-show tickets were sold for a Draft Horse University. This hour long presentation was conducted by Brian Coleman during which time he used horses from Leroy Leavitt to show a working horse in harness and then a horse from Mark Messenger Memorial Hitch to display a show horse in harness. He discussed each, pointed out differences in the horse use and manner of go and answered numerous questions from those in attendance. Sunday’s show brings out the local farm teams to compete in log skid and feed team contests in the morning with the finalists going to the afternoon show as well as competing in the farm team on the rail class. The eight horse hitch caps the Sunday afternoon performance and spectators are allowed to walk the barns and see up close some of the work behind the show ring. Paul R. Pack March 21, 1936 – April 11, 2017 Memorial by Joel Newcomer Photos by Paul Pack from 2017 National Western Draft Horse Show My Friend and one of the Colorado Draft Horse Association’s strongest supporters passed away at his Home on April 11th. He was born in Greencastle, Indiana to a Farming Family where he was exposed to working horses, automobile racing (Indy 500), and Hoosier Basketball where he attended Indiana University and was the Basketball Team Manager. He and his Bride, Glenna, moved to Colorado Springs in 1962 where they enjoyed a full life being members of the Sports Car Club where he then became involved with the Pikes CDHA 1
Spring 2017 April 27, 2017 Peak Hill Climb as their Public Relations Director in 1975. This was the first place our lives passed and later on would be part of our Friendship. I raced Stock Cars in that Event from 1976 to 1992. Paul later became involved in the “Colorado Springs Balloon Festival” and was their Announcer for 23 years, good experience for one of our Draft Horse Show “Premier” Announcers. Paul and Glenna raised two Daughters and one Son who provided them with their “Very Special” Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren that have Grady Anson - Junior Driving Class been the focus of their lives. His early life working with Draft Horses in the fields of their Farm was something that was deep in his soul because he eventually was drawn to our Association. He was never one to just sit on the sidelines so he eventually became the President of the Southern Chapter of our Association and was our State Newsletter Editor for many, many years, where his photos were the highlights. He was always at our meetings at Harley’s Sale and was deeply involved in the decisions that were made. He was the Announcer at many of our Shows and was instrumental in organizing and running the Arapahoe County Show for its TJ Keifer - Team Class existence. And for the last few years he was my behind the scenes help and the Announcer at the Douglas County Fair Draft Horse Show. During the last two Years of his illness, we, as the Association were able to Thank him with a Plaque at the Stock Show and get him a ride on a Hitch Wagon with a 6-up of Percherons from TJ and Stacey Kiefer’s Hitch. We have all lost a “Great Friend” but as Glenna said “Paul passed away peacefully…in his favorite chair and his favorite pajamas (100% cotton flannel, snaps-no-buttons, with a must have pocket). He was ready. “Rest in Peace, Old Friend” Gary Reiber - Feed Team Race Christie Horn of Flintstone Belgians CDHA 2
