ITINERARY Monday, 10 September 2018 D Arrive London Individual arrivals at London Heathrow where you will be met by an Abercrombie & Kent representative and transferred to your hotel for a two night stay. Here you will meet up with your Tour Director who will accompany you throughout the tour. A half-day orientation tour this afternoon with a local guide to include the main sights of England’s Capital – you will drive past many of the capital’s most iconic sights including the Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square, with stops for photos along the way. You also gain a spectacular panorama of the city during your flight on the London Eye, the world's largest cantilevered observation wheel, which is located on the South Bank of the River Thames. A Welcome Dinner with the rest of the group this evening within walking distance of the hotel. Wednesday, 12 September 2018 B, L London to Winchester This morning depart London with your Tour Director for Fishbourne, a journey of approximately two hours. Explore the Fishbourne Roman Palace, a renowned Roman site with outstanding mosaics and take a stroll in the Roman garden. A casual lunch to be taken in the Palace Café during the visit. This afternoon transfer to your hotel in Winchester, a journey of approximately one hour. Winchester is an ancient city steeped in history and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Remainder of the afternoon and evening at leisure for your one night stay. Winchester Royal Hotel 1 night Standard Rooms Thursday, 13 September 2018 B, L Winchester to Bath With your Tour Director depart Winchester this morning for Bath via Stonehenge and Avebury. Arrive Stonehenge after a journey of approximately 50 minutes, arguably the most famous prehistoric site in Europe. A lunch stop will be made in a traditional, English pub when convenient. Onwards to Avebury, a journey of approximately 40 minutes. Here is one of Britain’s most impressive and complex prehistoric sites. Consisting of three circles of standing stones and a huge circular bank and ditch, its history stretches as far back as 2850 BC. Arrive in Bath, a journey of approximately one hour from Avebury. Friday, 14 September 2018 B, D Bath This morning with a local guide take a half day walking tour of Bath to see the main sights, especially the Roman Baths that were discovered in an excellent state of preservation near to Bath Abbey church. Afternoon at leisure. Dine this evening as a group in a local restaurant within walking distance of your hotel. Francis Hotel – MGallery by Sofitel Classic Rooms Saturday, 15 September 2018 B, L Bath to Cheltenham Depart Bath this morning with your Tour Director for Cheltenham via Nympsfield Long Barrow and Chedworth Roman Villa. The journey from Bath to Nympsfield is approximately one hour. The Long Barrow stands high on the Cotswold scarp, with spectacular views over the Severn Valley. Constructed in the Neolithic period, it has long been the subject of local legends. Onwards to Chedworth Roman Villa, a journey of approximately 55 minutes. Here, cradled in a beautiful Cotswold valley rest the remains of one of the grandest Roman villas in Britain. A lunch stop will be made in a traditional, Cotswold pub before travelling to your hotel in Cheltenham, a journey of approximately 40 minutes. Sunday, 16 September 2018 B, D Cheltenham Today with a local guide and your Tour Director, combine some Cotswold sightseeing with more archaeological sites. Begin with a short journey to the ancient Anglo Saxon town of Winchcombe for a brief walk around. Next visit Belas Knap, a particularly fine example of a Neolithic long barrow, with a false entrance and side chambers. Excavated in 1863 and 1865, the remains of 31 people were found in the chambers. The barrow has since been restored. (Please note there is limited parking here and it is a steep uphill walk of approximately ½ mile to reach Belas Knap). Onwards to the pretty Cotswold villages of Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh, the latter located at the crossroads of the Fosse Way Roman road. Here a stop will be made for an independent lunch (payable locally) in one of the many cafes or pubs available. Final visit of the day is the Rollright Stones, an ancient site consisting of three main elements, The Kings Men stone circle, the King Stone, and the Whispering Knights. Return to your hotel in Cheltenham, a journey of approximately 50 minutes. Dine this evening as a group in a local restaurant within walking distance of your hotel. The Principal York Hotel 2 nights Superior Rooms Tuesday, 18 September 2018 B, D York Today discover one of the most historic cities in England on a full day tour with a local guide. Narrow cobbled streets lined with medieval, half-timbered buildings intertwine to form the heart of York’s charming Old Town. The most famous of these streets is the Shambles, formerly a butchers' quarter. The soaring medieval structure of York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps. Its towering windows contain more than half of all the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century stained glass surviving in England. The Jorvik Viking Centre is home to one of the most famous and astounding discoveries of modern archaeology. Between the years 1976-81 archaeologists revealed the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-Age city of Jorvik as it stood nearly 1,000 years ago. Clifford’s Tower standing on a high mound with panoramic views of the city. From prehistory to the city's medieval splendor, see the whole story in their fantastic galleries. Walk on a genuine Roman mosaic floor, kneel at St William's medieval shrine and marvel at one of the country’s greatest treasures - the beautiful Middleham Jewel. On arrival meet with a local guide who will escort you for today’s sightseeing. Visit Vindolanda where live excavations take place every year. As one of Europe's most important Roman archaeological sites, it provides a magnificent display of objects found during the excavations. Housesteads Roman Fort, known as Vercovicium, was built during 122-32. Here, you can explore the barrack blocks and the hospital whilst admiring the panoramic views from this ancient fortress. Explore Hadrian’s Wall and the surrounding countryside that stretches across the north of England from the west Cumbrian Roman coastal defences at Ravenglass, through Carlisle to Hexham in Northumberland and on to Newcastle upon Tyne.
