Clean shipping - Horizon 2020 - ESSF HELCOM MARITIME 18/2018 Hamburg, Germany 25 - 27 September 2018
Horizon 2020 Supports • Collaborative R&I for consortia (typically at least 3 entities in 3 member or associated states) addressing topics defined in a published call. • SME actions (bottom up) • Up to 100% or 70% of direct R&I costs. • A typical 50% prepayment at start of project • International cooperation (most less developed countries funded same as an EU country) • Demonstration activities
Horizon 2020 Expects • Progress beyond the state of the art • Clear Impacts as defined for the topic and EU added value • Impartial selection of projects, founded upon transparency and independent peer review by groups of expert evaluators • Public engagement and dissemination Find out and apply via the H2020 participant portal http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal
Maritime R&I • Maritime Transport R&I mainly addressed within Horizon 2020 transport challenge. Other challenges such as Energy (fuels) and Hydrogen Fuel cell JU (marine fuel cells), may also support, • No dedicated budget; Typically €50m/year to waterborne transport R&I. • Research topics address: • Safe (regulation, accidents … ) • Green (decarbonisation, electrification, pollution reduction..) • Smart (moving more by water, manufacturing, digital, autonomy..)
ENERGY EFFICIENT AND EMISSION FREE VESSEL – FROM COMPONENT TO VESSEL DEPLOYMENT • HERCULES-2 LEANSHIPS E-FERRY • • Fuel flexible, near-zero Efficient, less polluting The first mid-size 100% • emission, adaptive new/retrofitted vessels electric ferry • performance marine with end users’ • engine requirements

Detailed achievement: the Green Shipping Guarantee Programme • The Green Shipping Guarantee Programme was created in 2016 by the EIB to provide financial guarantee through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Debt Instrument and the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) for green solutions based on the concept defined by the ESSF. • With a capacity of €750m of guarantees, it is designed both for general fleet renewal and the retrofitting of ships with sustainable technologies (such as LNG, ballast water, energy efficiency, etc.). This amount of guarantees is expected to generate €3bn of investments in the sector. • The conclusion of the first guarantee transaction in the Green Shipping Guarantee Programme was officially announced on 11 December 2017. (purchase of an LNG-powered ferry in France). Mobility and Transport
Detailed achievement: the LNG Bunkering Guidance • Non-binding collection of good practice recommendations in support of EU Member States. • Support in the implementation of Directive 2014/94 (Alternative Fuel Infrastructure) • Bringing LNG Bunkering closer to Port Regulations development. • Open document – Promoting continuous update of LNG Bunkering Good Practice. ESSF Renewal : what? • Content : • The current ESSF mandate has proven to be effective to address all the relevant issues related to the sustainability of maritime transport (incl. flexibility to take on new issues). The ESSF mandate will therefore be renewed under very similar terms. (details on structure still to be decided) • Format : • Open-ended mandate to allow continuity in the activities • The distinction between the Plenary (high-level discussion) and the sub- groups (technical discussion) will be kept although more links will be expected to improve the coordination. • Stronger correlation with relevant project and initiatives • Constant involvement expected from the members: no dormant members Mobility and Transport
