SOCIAL SCIENCES America's Struggle Against Slavery How do you slay a many-headed monster? How do you defeat an economic system deaf to the cries of conscience and morality? How do you destroy an entrenched special interest that profits from treating people like property? For three centuries, men and women committed to resisting the spread of slavery in British North America and the new United States grappled with these questions, searching for ways to save themselves and others from the dehumanizing consequences of commodification. This course offers a rare chance to step into their shoes. As we examine the different tools and tactics, means, and methods that Americans, both black and white, have used to escape slavery or try to exterminate it, we will confront the grand problems that animated all those who fought to end slavery. This is a 30-part DVD Great Course. The first half will be this term, the second half will be part of the Summer 2022 term. Each session is 30 minutes with 2 parts played each week. Location: Online Date: Mon, Mar 21 - May 2 Time: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm Sessions: 7 Limit: 40 Facilitator: Suzanne Brown suzannebrownpt@gmail.com 1939 New York World's Fair Presenter: Stephen Siek ASU Emeritus College Professor The World of Tomorrow: A Visit to the 1939 New York World’s Fair. While the modern marvels of Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair were offset by Renaissance palaces, the New York Fair of 1939 paid little homage to the past. By contrast, it was entirely future-oriented, symbolized by a streamlined Trylon and Perisphere, by RCA’s pavilion built in the shape of a radio tube, and perhaps most emphatically by Norman Bel Geddes’s “Futurama” housed in the General Motors pavilion – a land of Oz where radio-controlled cars traveled at breakneck speed through cities which soared to the sky. This class will journey back to a billion-dollar exposition that once promoted science-fiction miracles as just around the corner – but fell far short of bringing about its promised utopia. SOCIAL SCIENCES Unpacking the Supply Chain Presenter: Brian Dille, PhD - Mesa Community College Professor A number of people are perplexed as to what caused the supply chain disruptions across so many sectors in the summer and fall of 2021. Dr. Dille will look at the many factors that came together to cause this, and predict what these supply problems mean for the economy in 2022. Location: MCC Dobson Date: Tues, Feb 22 Time: 1:00 - 3:00 pm Sessions: 1 Limit: 50 Facilitator: Barbara Thelander bthelander56@gmail.com Capitalism versus Socialism Part 2 This course covers the important economic systems in the world today. It also addresses the historical background and big ideas that created the different economic systems. The actual development of British and American capitalism highlights the advances and problems created by industrial capitalism. The reaction to the excesses of early industrial capitalism created the first socialist movements that attempted to reform and improve the capitalist system. This is one of the Great Course series containing 24 separate lectures. This session will cover the second 12 lectures. The lectures are self-contained and NFLL members do not need to attend all lectures. But sadly, nearly all of its early buildings and homes have disappeared. So, where have all the structures gone? To answer that question, Jay Mark dug deep into photo archives to uncover long forgotten images that help reveal the story of Mesa's past and its remarkable architecture. This lively, entertaining presentation offers residents and visitors a new and fascinating view of the Gem City.
