                         AMOS ALONZO STAGG MEDAL
Named after legendary football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, and presented annually since 1947, the
medal is awarded to a senior male athlete who has combined athletic performance with scholarship,
ability, leadership, character, and significant contributions to team success.

                                    NICK D'AMBROSE
Nick D’Ambrose concluded a decorated senior campaign by receiving the 2022 Stagg Medal.
The award is named after legendary former football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, and is presented
annually since 1947 to the senior male athlete with the best all-around record for athletics,
scholarship, and character. As a running back on the UChicago football team, D’Ambrose was
an immediate contributor with 10 touchdowns in his collegiate debut in 2018. Over his four years
on the roster, he helped lead the Maroons to a 21-8 overall record. D’Ambrose became the focal
point of the offense in a legendary senior season in fall 2021. UChicago boasted one of the best
offenses in the nation, scoring 48 points per game and averaging 518 yards per game. D’Ambrose
was at the forefront – he finished second in the nation with a school-record 1,714 rushing yards,
smashing the previous record that was held for 28 years. He also set new school records with 7.4
yards per carry and 20 rushing touchdowns. Those big numbers were recognized with numerous
postseason accolades, as D’Ambrose was named a First Team All-American by D3football.com,
the AFCA and the Associated Press. He was picked as the Midwest Conference Offensive Skill
MVP as well. D’Ambrose’s academic excellence was also recognized – he earned 2021 First Team
Academic All-America status by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

                           GERTRUDE DUDLEY MEDAL
The Gertrude Dudley Medal is awarded to the senior female athlete who has

the Dudley Medal has been presented annually since 1977 to outstanding senior athletes for
leadership and skill in women's athletics. As a member of the track & field team, Maletich stood out
as one of the nation’s best jumpers right from the start of her collegiate career. In her first national
meet in 2019, she captured the NCAA national championship in the indoor long jump. She followed
up in the 2019 outdoor season by finishing national runner-up in the long jump. Maletich was
regularly the top jumper in NCAA Division III on an annual basis. She is a three-time NCAA national
champion and nine-time All-American between the long jump and triple jump events. She claimed
the 2021 NCAA outdoor long jump and triple jump national championships as a junior. Maletich
tied the NCAA Division III all-time record in the indoor triple jump with a leap of 12.71 meters in
2022. Ten of her indoor triple jumps rank among the top 18 marks in NCAA Division III history. She
has been named the national Most Outstanding Women's Field Performer in two different years,

LLEWELLYN JOHN AND HARRIET
   MANCHESTER QUANTRELL
 AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN
  UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING
In 1938, an anonymous gift to the University created an endowment, the
purpose of which was unique in American higher education: a monetary
award to be presented annually to faculty members in recognition
of their excellence in teaching undergraduate students. The donor’s
anonymity technically prevailed for more than a decade, but in 1952,
University Trustee Ernest Quantrell added to his gift, consented to be
acknowledged as the donor and named the award for his parents, Llewellyn
                   John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell.
The Quantrell Award is believed to be the nation’s oldest prize for
undergraduate teaching. Based on letters of nomination from students, the
award is among the most treasured by faculty. Nobel Laureate James Cronin,
University Professor in Physics, said he was “bowled over to be receiving this
                                Quantrell prize.”
“I really care about teaching undergraduates—it’s both a great
responsibility and a great pleasure—and to have this recognition is just
incredible. It’s better than some of the more public awards I’ve gotten,” he said.
In a 1952 issue of the University of Chicago Magazine, Quantrell
described the motivation behind his gift. “The success of a university depends
on its product, and its product consists of students trained to lead happy,
proficient, useful and unselfish lives. To obtain this product, a good faculty is
essential and constitutes the most important part of a university. We have had,
and still have, great teachers, but we will have still greater ones."

                                       DAVID KOVAR
                                       Professor
Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology and the College

DAVID KOVAR is an innovative biochemist, a virtuoso cell biologist, and a passionate educator, who
inspires and challenges students to tackle fundamental cell biological concepts. His course in the
biological sciences on protein structure and the inner skeleton of a cell shows a sincere dedication to
undergraduate teaching. He skillfully engages students by focusing on depth, by grounding lessons
in experiments, and by including a much appreciated joke of the day. Students have praised him for
his clarity, enthusiasm, and caring, all sentiments captured by one student comment: “Dr. Kovar is
very engaging and helpful, he is energetic and clear and excited about the material.” Several students
awarded him the highest possible praise, for example, “David Kovar is hands down the best instructor I
                                      have had at this institution.”

                               Senior Instructional Professor,
Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics and the College

VICTOR LIMA teaches many economics majors their first course, Elements of Economic Analysis I, and
some majors take their last course, the Undergraduate Honors Workshop, with him. He is an inspiring
teacher, helping students navigate rigorous mathematical content, deep economic questions, and
the all-important mapping between them. As co-director of undergraduate studies, he has laid the
foundation for, and overseen, an explosion of interest in the largest major on campus, now accounting
for more than a quarter of all declared majors. His superior teaching shows students the breadth of
economic sciences and the importance of analytical and empirical rigor in addressing fundamental
                                     questions in the social sciences.

                                   Associate Professor,
Department of English Language and Literature and the College

JULIE ORLEMANSKI is a scholar of medieval English literature and culture fascinated with encounters
between past and present and the intellectual innovations they make possible. Her research explores
how the body was understood prior to modern medicine, and her courses open for student investigation
the practices of medieval healing, as well as the importance of religion in medicine today. She energizes
students of both medieval and contemporary literature by asking fundamental questions of literary
voice and style. Her classroom vibrates with the excitement of historical strangeness, while her clarity
of explication makes past worlds approachable without domesticating them. Her erudition, coupled
with her passionate investment in the mentoring relationship, makes her classroom a space of vital and
                                         transformative inquiry.

Department of History and the College

JOHANNA RANSMEIER is a scholar of modern Chinese history. Her courses on law and human rights
in China combine a rigorous engagement with rich primary sources with an incisive pursuit of cross-
cultural contextualization and understanding. In these classes, students learn not only about modern
China, but also about the importance of historicizing their own cultural assumptions regarding rights,
obligations, and the uses of the law. She illuminates the important principles of law and human rights
with an engaged consideration of the legal process of deliberation during trials. Her lively in-class
discussions invite students to connect historical debates and struggles with contemporary ones, in
China and beyond, showing them, as only the best teachers of history can do, that the past is always
                                                present.

in the enthusiastic comments of his students: “Fantastic, extremely engaging, and interesting. He gave
us examples for the abstract topics and communicated his excitement for the material to us.” “A very
entertaining and interesting lecturer who really values student comprehension, constantly bringing up
fascinating little tidbits of information that extend the topic we are learning about to the real world.” His
students are extremely grateful for his dedication to and thoughtful guidance in the Department of Physics.
