The event is about transforming a space through the medium of art. The event will feature an outdoor gallery of temporary light installations and sculptures, such as projections, light sculptures, interactive exhibits, architectural lighting and paths of light. The event appeals to a wide community demographic and encourages social participation. The project aims to attract both emerging and experienced artists to display an outdoor art gallery of cutting-edge light installations stretching through Claremont Park. The Town of Claremont is looking for both emerging and experienced artists to create a light-based installation to exhibit as part of the weekend festival. The installations will be exhibited in Claremont Park from the evening of Friday 27 March until the night of Sunday 29 March. The sculptural installations should engage the public and display a high level of artistic excellence, and preferably demonstrate a consideration of sustainability. The Town is conscious of waste, pollution and limited resources, and encourages artists to contemplate this during the design phase. Up to 15 sculptures will be commissioned. The Town encourages artists to create light sculptures and installations that are interactive. They can be free-standing, fixed or mobile. ARTTRA | Light Festival will be complemented by premium food stalls, focusing on cuisine which utilises fire or chargrilling. The event will also feature roving performers and kids’ activities. The Town of Claremont is responsible for these elements.
BRIEF The Town of Claremont will invite artists/design teams who are interested in delivering an artwork for the Town of Claremont’s signature creative event, held Friday 27, Saturday 28, and Sunday 29 March 2020. Installations will be exhibited in a series of marked spaces within Claremont Park. These will be strategically placed to engage patrons and create a sensory experience for all ages. Installations must be designed to attract visitors into the space, constructed of materials that can withstand public interaction, and consider the constant flow of pedestrians in and around the installations. Commissioner Town of Claremont Artwork scope Any light installation that encourages interaction, promotes sensory experiences, public facing, livens the park, is of a size and scale that reflects the venue and festival aim, and demonstrates quality artistic outcomes. The works will form a journey of discovery, with which members of the public will be encouraged to engage. Power will be provided and all EOIs must include details about required power. All power sources and electrical appliances will be required to meet all health and safety regulations as deemed by the Town and which the Town will arrange. Solar powered projects are encouraged. Installation considerations The series of art projects will be presented to the public in a pop-up gallery exhibition throughout Claremont Park. Artists will be asked to specify where they would like their installation to be placed, which will then be confirmed with the Town of Claremont. A space for each work will then be allocated taking into account the artist’s preferences. Locations may include the open grassed areas, trees and tree canopies and footpaths. A specific site visit for selected artists will be held from Tuesday 7 to Friday 24 January 2020. Artists are asked to remain with their work during the exhibition opening times, which are likely to be between 5pm and 10pm on Friday 27, Saturday 28, and Sunday 29 March, 2020. This should be considered within the total artist’s fees budget of $5000. Curatorial response The theme of ARTTRA calls for artworks that respond to high pedestrian traffic of all ages. Artworks should be playful in manner and created to attract and engage. Works that display racial, offensive or political messaging will not be accepted. Materials Materials will need to be suitable for the public art project; being durable, sit well within the space, climate resistant and with consideration for public safety. Artist’s role The role of the artist is to design, fabricate and install a public artwork for this festival. The artist is expected to work in collaboration with Town of Claremont officers during design and installation, and must include provision for someone to remain with the artwork during the festival opening times.
