2016 facts & figures: Europe Air travel The total number of flights departing from Europe, as measured by tickets issued, grew by 2 % in 2016 compared to the previous year1. Domestic flights increased by 1 %, intra-European by 1.5 % and intercontinental flights by 5.3 %. The share of total bookings for domestic, Intra-European and intercontinental air business trips departing from Europe remained almost unchanged in 2016 as compared to 2015 (see Figure 1). 2016 facts & figures: Europe Cities From 2015 to 2016 there was very little change in the ranking for destinations from Europe. The most frequented European cities are London and Vienna. Barcelona climbed up three spots from 9 to 6 due to a 7.1 % increase in air trips to the city (see Figure 2). The highest new entry in the Inter-European ranking is Madrid in eighth spot with an increase of 14.9 %. The reasons are the economic revival in Spain in general, as well well as an increase in the number of large events and conventions being held in Barcelona and Madrid in 2016. New York and Shanghai are the top destinations for intercontinental travel. They are followed by Dubai which overtook Beijing and Singapore with an increase of 7.5 % year over year (y-o-y). As Dubai prepares for World Expo 2020, a lot more affordable hotels are opening. This makes it a less expensive location to hold meetings and events. Furthermore, Dubai continues to invest in industrial diversification and infrastructure. Sneak preview on the individual country results We’ll soon publish the second chapter of the “BCD Travel Cities & Trends Report”, which contains individual ranking for eight major business travel markets in Europe. Here’s a sneak preview of some of our findings: The top destinations for domestic, European and international air travel, departing from Germany, are Berlin, London and Shanghai – same as the previous year. Business travelers from Switzerland mostly travelled to Geneva, London and New York. London and New York are the most frequented European and intercontinental cities when it comes to air business trips departing from the Netherlands and Belgium. Business travelers from Luxembourg primarily travel to London and Toronto. In Europe, the top five most popular countries for air business trips departing from France are Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Switzerland.
