Glorifying God By Caring For Children And Families Winter 2015 80 Lake Eden Road Black Mountain, NC 28711 828.686.3451 sthomas@blackmountainhome.org www.blackmountainhome.org for Children, Youth and Families Christmas Wishes Come True for Youth Waiting for Santa Claus can be exhausting. Youth and staff got into the holiday spirit. Thanks to donors like you, each and every child’s wish list was filled on Christmas morning. Not only did the children receive presents, they also had chances to give back in the community with visits to the Veteran’s Home and Highland Farms. Youth caroled through the hallways and provided gifts and treats for the residents they adopted this Christmas. Sheriff ’s Department Partners with BMH This past December, the Buncombe County Sheriff ’s Department spent a weekend at a local Wal-Mart collecting toys, bicycles, sporting equipment, food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and much more from generous members of our community. The Sheriff ’s Department has a five-year history of sponsoring a party complete with Christmas gifts for the children at the Home, but for the past two years they’ve taken their annual party a step further. All of the officers volunteered their time to hand out fliers to increase awareness of the ministry and invite shoppers to donate items for the kids. “We really like giving something back to the community and we see how appreciative the staff and the kids are of what we do. It wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for the citizens of Buncombe Co. giving back,” said Sgt. Bert Alexander.
Page 2 Get Involved Through Special Events At BMH we love having visitors and there are several events in 2015 that offer you a chance to learn more about our ministry and participate in our mission first-hand. Page 3 A Word From the President A Shining Light in the Darkness “And here you yourself must be an example to them of good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect your love of the truth and the fact that you are in dead earnest about it.” – Titus 2:7 In the ten years I’ve been at Black Mountain Home, I have been overwhelmed by the generosity, thoughtfulness, and commitment of the donors, volunteers, and prayer warriors God has sent our way. And I want to let you know how much your gifts of time, money, and hard work impact the youth we are serving Recently, an alumnus visited the home. As he was touring campus and visiting with staff who he considers family, he noticed a donation jar for the Youth Leadership Team in the office building. He removed a fifty-cent piece from his pocket and dropped it into the jar. Then he commented that he would’ve given more, but that was all he had. What prompted this young man with only fifty cents in his pocket to give it all without hesitation? I believe the answer is twofold. First, he knows from personal experience how the Home helps young people like him. The staff welcomed him, loved him, challenged him to succeed, and held him accountable. Second, he has seen countless volunteers and donors give sacrificially to make sure the ministry has what it needs to make sure the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of youth are met. And with those examples in his memory, he then repeated the process. He gave all he had to make sure other young people like him could continue to receive the love and help they need. Thank you for being an example of good deeds. Thank you for letting everything you do reflect your love for the absolute truth of God’s Word and your sincere devotion to Christ. You are shining a light into the darkness and blazing a path for our youth to follow. – Tom Campbell, President Change for Children When little Hazel Johnson heard about Rev. Robert Perry Smith's plans to care for orphaned children, her heart was touched. Only a child herself, she stepped forward in April 1904 to provide Smith with his first donation—13 pennies. Now children and adults are continuing her legacy by collecting change to make a difference in the lives of children. We’re happy to supply materials for groups or individuals who want to help collect change. Top 10 Projects 1. Mural Artists – to liven up our campus 6. Cooks – to help with campus events and youth 2. Page 4 December Giving Reaches Goal! As of December 31, we reached the halfway point in our fiscal year. That means our goal was to have raised $500,000 of the million we need each year to offset dwindling government funds. And, thanks to supporters like you, we did it with a little over $505,000 raised! The compassion, generosity, and love shared by you—our supporters—is humbling. Your desire to change the lives of children in need for the better is the cornerstone of our ministry. We couldn’t do this without partners like you. Of course, we still have six months to go, but the outpouring of support we’ve seen recently gives us hope and reminds us that God will continue to do a mighty work in us and through us for the sake of His children. 2013 - 2014 ANNUAL REPORT Program/Administrative Highlights At Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth & Families our overarching goal is to glorify God by caring for children and families. We work hard to make sure everything we do reflects that mission. Our most recent fiscal year was an exciting one with programs continuing to grow and more children being served. In FY 13-14, BMH served 109 children from 16 counties including Alexander, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey. HIGHLIGHT: ACCREDITATION HIGHLIGHT: HOPE & A FUTURE In February 2014, Black Mountain Home for Children completed the process of becoming accredited through the Council on Accreditation (COA). Founded in 1977, COA is an international, independent, not-for- profit, child and family service, and behavioral healthcare accrediting organization. COA envisions excellence in the delivery of human services globally, resulting in the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. “Our focus at the children’s home is always on what’s in the best interest of our children,” said BMH President Tom Campbell. “COA is the gold standard in accreditation and we knew it was important to not only use best practices, but have them affirmed by an outside agency.” Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the A few highlights from the reviewers included: Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you “The group homes that BMH operates are exceptional. Sample Volunteer Projects • Biltmore Baptist Church—East came out to work for their “Love Loud” volunteer day with 150 people completing a variety of projects. • Acts Of Kindness Biker’s Fellowship, Isight Church, and Tryon Presbyterian Church furnished and decorated three of the new Independent Living apartments. • Volunteers from Wetmore Baptist Church helped frame a pole barn for our animal program while Grace Bible Church and Indian Trail Presbyterian helped roof it. • Asheville Youth Mission (AYM) helped reclaim a trail on the mountain property. • A group from Southminster Presbyterian Church began developing our low ropes course. • Frenchtown Presbyterian Church, NJ, built a carport for the foster care house. • First Presbyterian Church, Beaufort, SC, stained and painted our playground benches. • Retired coach Roger Thompson came out to lead a basketball clinic for our youth for the seventh year. • Volunteers were key in the success of annual events like the Fall Festival, Bloomin’ Plant Sale, and the fashion show. • Volunteers provided youth activities including piano and hand bell lessons, woodworking and pottery classes, basketball, Bible study, tutoring, and other clubs and classes. • And they tackled plenty of weeding, mulching, painting, cleaning, mowing, planting, and other odd jobs around campus. Volunteer Of The Year The Lamar & Ruthmary Williamson Volunteer of the Year Award went to Sue Travers and Mike Wilson in June 2014. Volunteers are nominated by the youth and staff at the Home who are privileged to work with them throughout the year. Sue Travers works with the Home’s Earth Club to prepare, plant, and maintain flower and vegetable beds. With enthusiasm and joy, she leads youth in caring for and learning about plants. One of the staff members who nominated her wrote, “She has a passion for teaching and loving on our kids.” Mike Wilson volunteers primarily with the maintenance department helping with work projects, repairs, computer issues, and general maintenance. He also has an opportunity to help teach some of the youth how to handle general household maintenance—a valuable tool for them as they grow up. A nominator wrote of Mike, “He has a heart for the ministry and is willing to help wherever needed.” Service Information During the fiscal year 109 youth were served. The majority of discharges—92%—were the result of favorable outcomes: 58% for family reunification, kinship or adoption; 11% to enter the Ray Campbell Independent Living Village; and 23% to transition to other programs according to plan. Service breakdown by program: Residential—main campus = 72; Independent Living = 10 ; Whitewater Cove = 11; Foster Care = 16
