Each purchase supports the work of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity to
continue our vital work, providing lifelong support to thousands of serving
personnel, veterans and their families. Last year our teams of volunteers
and employees helped more than 85,000 people, from Second World War
veterans to those who have served in more recent conflicts. SSAFA
understands that behind every uniform is a person and we are here
for them any time they need us, for as long as they need us.

Norton House
When Private Martin Tavendale was in an accident involving a HGV, his
family and partner Jacqueline were told to prepare for the worst. But
despite horrific injuries Martin pulled through, and currently receives
specialist care at a military rehabilitation centre, based in Leicestershire. For
more than a year, Jacq had made the expensive and exhausting 500-mile
round trip from Motherwell to visit Martin every month and SSAFA’s Norton
House has been there to support her, as she supports him.
“It’s so much more than a bed for a night, it’s the home from home that has
helped me cope with the trauma. It’s a sanctuary, and a place to connect with
others who know what you are going through”
“It’s a beautiful place. And the people here listen. That means more than
anything. I find it hard to talk about the accident. But when I am here it all

13Support during pandemic - Philip Hardwell
When the coronavirus pandemic first hit, Phillip Hardwell, a
32-year-old Royal Artillery veteran from Bristol, needed a lifesaving
heart transplant. He was separated from his family due to lockdown
and did not see his children due to the health risks following his
operation.
“It was tough on everyone. SSAFA were there to secure funding for
Roxanne’s food and accommodation so she could stay with me in
Cambridge. She was able to be there with me day in and day out
until she was forced to stay away because of Covid-19. She kept me
going. Without her I am not sure if I would have made it as far as I
did. So, the help from SSAFA in Bristol and our caseworker Alan to
keep her there was incredible.”
