Cherokee Trail 2021-2022 Parent Teacher Community Organization [PTCO] Welcome new and returning CT families! As you all know, the Covid-19 issue has changed many things for all of us, from the ways we do business to how we interact with our friends and families. This has hit us pretty hard at Cherokee Trail as well, and we are looking for new ways to support our students and staff through this time. Our primary main fundraisers - calendars for the year (the actual on-campus schedule is still shifting) and our Craft Fairs (our Spring Fair was cancelled, and we are still unsure of the status of our upcoming Fall Fair) - won’t be generating the usual financial support, and we are hoping for family & community donations to bridge a bit of that gap. Please use RevTrak to make donations to PTCO. A bit about our organization: the purpose of the Cherokee Trail PTCO is to assist in attaining the highest level of education and welfare for the entire student body of Cherokee Trail High School through the cooperative efforts of the Faculty and Staff, the Cherry Creek School District community and parents. PTCO shall also work to further the Cherokee Trail Mission statement: “Our actions will ignite the genius and nurture the goodness within us all.” Here are some of the fruits of our fundraising efforts: ● PTCO provides classroom grants that enhance the educational and learning experience of the Cherokee Trail High School student body. In 2020, PTCO made over $25,000 in grants for educational materials, equipment, and learning experiences. PTCO’s legacy for having an impact on our students’ learning experience continues! ● PTCO hosts After Prom, a post-prom safe and alcohol-free event for CT students. More than 350 juniors and seniors attended After Prom 2019 Boondocks. ● PTCO prepares and serves dinner to the faculty and staff during the fall and spring Parent/Teacher conferences. ● PTCO is a Teacher Appreciation Week sponsor. ● PTCO sponsors the annual Holiday Craft Fair each fall, followed months later with the Spring Fling Craft Fair. We are also in need of new general members! We invite you to join PTCO at our projects, programs and meetings. PTCO enlists a communication platform to keep parents and guardians informed of volunteer opportunities and school events. Be sure to Opt In during registration to receive our email communiques. PTCO encourages you to share your ideas and help make a difference in your student’s experience throughout his/her time at Cherokee Trail. If you would like to volunteer or join PTCO, please fill out the PTCO Sign Up Form. We hope you’ll make plans to join us for our General Membership meetings throughout the year. Watch your email for dates and times . If you have any questions please email: lindseybraun921@gmail.com or tamibrown23@gmail.com. Your Cherokee Trail PTCO Board looks forward to making the 2021-2022 school year a great one!

SOPHOMORE STUDENTS COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS DAY 2021 On October 13th, 2021, all students will participate in College & Career Readiness Day. This year, 10th grade students will have the opportunity to choose to take one of two college preparatory tests. The test options are as follows: Option 1: PSAT (Free) Option 2: Practice National Merit Qualifier Test ($25 Fee Required) What is the Practice NMSQT? The Practice NMSQT is a College Board Test which measures critical reading, math, problem solving, and writing skills developed over a student’s years in school. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. 11th grade high school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. What are the benefits to taking the Practice NMSQT as a 10th grader? While 10th grade students are not eligible to qualify for the National Merit Program, taking the test as a sophomore provides students with valuable practice to potentially qualify for the National Merit Program during their junior year. Students can link their scores to Khan Academy and receive personalized test preparation for the PSAT-10 (spring of 10th grade), PSAT/NMSQT (fall of 11th grade), and SAT (spring of 11th grade). Visit www.nationalmerit.org for more information. Should my 10th grade student take the Practice NMSQT or the free PSAT? The answer to this question needs to be decided between you and your student. The PSAT is designed for students to take in 10th grade; 10th grade students will also take the PSAT-10 in April of the 2021-2022 school year. The PSAT-10 is the College Board equivalent to the Pre-ACT and will help students prepare to take the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT in 11th grade. Cherokee Trail will support your family’s decision for your student to take either test; however, we recommend the following: 9 Students in Honors/Pre-AP/AP Courses and in the top 20% of their class in 10th grade take the Practice NMSQT or the PSAT 9 Students in grade level/college preparatory classes take the PSAT
