SAFETY TOWN COMES TO BRANDON! The “town” of Brandon will be painted on the blacktop. Modeled like the above photo, taken for the City of Brookings Safety Town. We are excited to announce the children in the Brandon area will have the opportunity to participate in Safety Town! Safety Town is a two week safety program that will be offered for the first time in Brandon this summer. Children ages five and six years old, will learn safety behavior through hands on learning activities, under the supervision of a Brandon Police Officer and a teacher. Our hope is that the safety skills and procedures children learn at Safety Town will stay with them through their lifetime. Our goal is for Safety Town graduates to grow up to be a safe and responsible members in their communities. This program would not be possible if it were not for the help and cooperation of the Brandon Police Department, City of Brandon, Brandon Valley School District, the Brandon Valley Optimist Club and our many sponsors. CITY FINANCES PROPERTY TAX & SALES TAX PROPERTY TAXES (OWNER OCCUPIED ONLY) Property tax is one source of revenue that supports the day to day operations of your City. The Minnehaha County Auditor’s Office collects all property taxes and then distributes the taxes to the appropriate entity. The City receives about 21.5% of an owner-occupied residential property tax bill. Property tax revenue is a general fund revenue supporting police, fire, streets, snow removal, parks, pool and more. Property tax is one of the major sources of revenue for any City and without this we could not run your City. A worksheet to figure your taxes is available at www.cityofbrandon.org/taxes. *Please note this does not provide opt outs, Special Assessments or Frontage amounts if applicable. 2020 Taxes Payable in 2021 100,000 Taxable Value for Payable 2021 Municipal Levy Fire $13.80 3.546_________21.56% Library $30.10 School Levy Municipal Property Taxes 9.118__________55.44% Water $354.60 County Levy District Taxes 3.322__________20.20% $2.30 Water District Levy County Property Taxes 0.023____________0.14% $332.20 School Property Taxes Library Levy $911.80 0.301___________1.83% Fire Levy 0.138___________0.84% SALES TAX Sales tax is important to the City and another major source of revenue. This revenue source is not quite as consistent or predictable as property taxes. Sales tax changes with the economy. With every dollar you spend, two cents goes to the City’s General Fund. // ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS THE BIG 3 Nutritional Education on Macronutrients Carbohydrates, Protein, Fats. By Kaleb & Haley Lindsey-Stevens With all of the dieting options in society today, many people find themselves lost and/or bouncing from diet to diet. Trying to keep up with the newest “fad” diet can be exhausting and more often than not they are un- sustainable, lead to more weight fluctuation, less results, and just exhausting to keep up with. This is evidenced by the increase in the health and obesity epidemic we see in the United Sates. In 2020 70% of the US was overweight. The alarming and more concerning number is that 30% of that population was classified as obese. Obesity has a direct correlation to many of the leading causes of death such as heart disease and diabetes being two of those major causes. Statistics show that these numbers are going to continue climbing based on lack of nutrition education, fast convenient choices being more un-healthy, and lack of access to quality food sources. Therefore, a change in the understanding of the big 3 macronutrients can have a major impact on a person ability to make smarter food choices, understand the importance of quality nutrition vs. “meat & potatoes” and/or “real food”, and the health and obesity epidemic. The Big 3 are protein, carbs, and fats. It is important to understand how your body works so you can give it the nutrition it needs. Incorporating The Big 3 into every meal of the day is important for balanced nutrition and giving your body what it needs to stay energized. PROTEIN: We love it for two main reasons. Its helps build muscle and curb your appetite. Your muscles are what fuel your metabolism. Your metabolism is what burns calories and energizes your body. Protein is the “building block” that helps you repair your muscle. Meals rich in protein are especially useful because they help you feel fuller, longer. CARBOHYDRATES: Carbs are NOT your enemy! They’re actually one of the most misunderstood parts of The Big 3. Your carb intake should be personalized to you. However, a general rule of thumb is a 40/30/30 split among carbs, protein, and fats. Don’t be afraid of carbs, just remember which ones are better for you. i.e. whole fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains. FATS: Like carbs there are beneficial fats and fats you don’t need. Your body needs beneficial fats because they have essential fatty acids that your body can’t make, so you have to eat them or take them in a supplement. Beneficial fats come from fatty fish such as salmon, olive oil and olives, nuts and nut butters. Also, there are some vitamins you need that are fat-soluble (vitamins A, D, E, and K), which means they can only be absorbed into your body with some fats. So it is okay to add a little fat to your meals, but make sure the overall nutritional value of your diet is balanced. 14 | Inside Brandon Spring 2020 2021 Issue 5 7

Together, we offer an opportunity to provide transportation services to the parents in the Brandon community which allows their children to attend our 2.5-hour program. We are capable of serving 80 students in our current schedule and 96 when offering an additional class. We typically have over 50% of our students using this service. Parents have expressed their appreciation, as many preschoolers would not be able to attend our educational program without this transportation. Our preschoolers use this service for numerous reasons, such as they attend in-home daycare or daycare centers, they have smaller siblings, so parents have occupied schedules with naps or convenience, parents working from home and unable to leave for drop off/pick up. Our current teachers have 53%, 38% and 42% of their preschoolers who utilize this service. This is 28/63 (44.4%) students overall. We are blessed to be working with such committed individuals, who we rely on to provide a beginning educational journey for the young children in the Brandon community. We are thankful for the relationships the drivers build with the children. They truly care about our students and provide a safe and secure environment. They go above and beyond, as they even attend our Christmas programs and Graduation ceremonies, showing their love and their investment in these children. - A testimonial written by Michelle Ternus, Blessed Redeemer Lutheran Preschool Director 20 | Inside Brandon Spring 2021 Issue 7
Prairie Rehabilitation For our patients and our therapists, the Brandon City Transit is invaluable to Prairie Rehab. Over the years we have had many patients benefit from the transit’s services. The scheduling office is very helpful and accommodating to the patients as well as our clinic. Gwen is great about communicating with us and helps our front desk coordinate times for appointments. The drivers are outstanding! Todd, Darryl, Denny and Eileen assist the patients when they enter and exit the bus and walk with them to the building. They are kind and cheerful and a pleasure to visit with when they drop off the patients. They care about the people they transport and it shows! When the patients arrive they are so grateful and pleased with the services provided by the transit drivers. The drivers are always on time and willing to take people to multiple places, including the grocery store, to hair appointments, to church and to have coffee with friends! If not for the Brandon Transit, some people who want and need to get out into the community would not be able to. This service is vital to the emotional and physical well-being of the residents of Brandon!
