Definitions Personalised medicine: Comprehensive approach to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease based on individual genetic, epigenetic characteristics, lifestyles and environmental conditions. Acupuncture Global approach to the person in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, analysing the physiological characteristics, physical-psychological diseases, the lifestyles and the environmental life context. The person a unity of body and mind in relationship with the world around him/her.
Diagnosis Personalized medicine studies the set of genes (genomics), transcripts (transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics) and metabolites (metabolomics) that characterizes each person, to predict the severity of the disease and its evolution. Acupuncture studies the energetic typology of the person using the personal physiological and pathological anamnesis, also investigating the psychic part, the lifestyles and the way of reacting to external stimuli. The objective examination with the observation of the body, tongue and evaluation of the wrists defines the syndrome, the severity of the disease and the its possible evolution of the same allowing the choice of points to be treated.
Objectives Personalized medicine stratifies the population also in relation to gender in order to identify who benefits most from a treatment, to reduce the number of patients treated unnecessarily and the related costs. Also in acupuncture, the population is stratified to target therapeutic treatment, also in relation to gender and to improve the ‘constitutional terrain’.
Possible collaborations The association between acupuncture and precision medicine could clarify the relationship between the symptom onset, biological mechanisms that determine it and the function of the acupuncture point. For example, in precision oncology, patients with the same type of cancer, the same mutation, and who are similar to each other, may have different results in terms of effectiveness of anticancer treatment, side effects of therapy, quality of life. Acupuncture could preventively detect the possible onset of side effects and reduce them, also through the choice of specific points related to the "omics" profile of the person and his/her gender.
