20 Celebrating Success 2021 Alumni - What they are doing now Alliah Castor 2016-2018 After College, I moved to London for my legal undergraduate degree at City, University of London. I am currently in my final year and am predicted to achieve a 2:1. Over the last summer, my work placements had been cancelled due to Covid-19. Despite these unprecedented circumstances, to continue enhancing my skill set, I focused on engaging in various remote opportunities. Currently, I hold roles for various legal initiatives, which all aim to foster collaborative and informative communities for students. I am an ambassador for The Legal Amity, International Legal League, and FirstGens. I have also completed multiple remote work experiences with Bright Network and Squire Patton Boggs. A notable achievement of mine is having been a speaker at the “Legal Education Experience Across International Borders” event, for the Legal Torch Initiative. There, I answered questions regarding my personal experiences with UK legal education and gave guidance to anyone interested in international study in the UK. After graduation, I aim to do the LLM LPC and eventually qualify as a solicitor at a city firm in either London or Birmingham. Izrar Mumtaz 2015-2018 Since leaving College, I have gone on to read Law at the University of Birmingham and am currently in my final year of study. Upon completion I will progress onto my legal training and Masters in Corporate Law. I undertook a vacation scheme in Spring 2019 up at a Top Magic Circle Law Firm and have been fortunate enough to been offered a training contract in London upon qualifying as a solicitor. I accomplished my thesis on Capital Punishment which related very well with my Extended Project (EPQ) at College. My interest in law arose when studying Law, Business, Politics and EPQ where I came to realise the level of career choices/paths you occupy once having completed the most prestigious degree and the extent to which you interpret and apply law and provide legal advice to those who need it. I have been active in various activities both in and out of university which include Aspiring Solicitors and Rare Recruitment which help to boost your legal knowledge and experience. I was privileged to have been recognised by Bright Network as a future Top 100 Lawyer in the UK and was invited to their event where I liaised with trainee solicitors and partners of the top international firms.
Celebrating Success 2021 21 Connect with us on LinkedIn and Social Media Billy Heptinstall-Blakemore Since leaving Worcester Sixth Form College with a Level 3 Extended Diploma & 90 Credit in Sports Science, I began to further my knowledge in the subject at the University of Exeter. I studied at UoE for a year, but with everything comes complications, and after my first year, I decided the course wasn’t for me. Though with my prior support from Worcester Sixth Form College after having to retake my English GCSE three times, I was able to gain the motivation to pick myself back up and hit the ground running. After university I approached Parkwood Leisure where I am now working full time in the Business Systems sector, the company focuses in the development and management of leisure centres around the country in support of local councils. I am now studying at the University College of Estate Management, studying for a Bsc in Chartered Quantity Surveying. I have grown an interest in the subject of Quantity Surveying particularly in the built environment since leaving University. Hannah Baylis 2015-2017 A week after my last exam at College in June 2017, I started working at Airband, an Internet Provider specialising in delivering to rural communities. For the past 3 years I have progressed from Helpdesk Assistant to a Support Desk Technician to now being a Network Analyst. During my time at Airband so far, I have already completed one apprenticeship. This was a Level 4 IT framework, equivalent to a foundation degree. I have since been working towards my BSc (Hons) from the University of Wolverhampton in partnership with my apprenticeship training provider which I plan to complete in April 2022. I am so grateful for my time in College as it helped me to grow into an independent adult, taking responsibility for myself in a working environment, and it gave me the work ethic I needed to succeed in the real world. My subjects did not directly link to how my job today as none were IT focused but they helped me with the foundation skills of basic communication, logic and knowledge retention which has helped me to become the “go-to” girl for a lot of things within my team of Analysts, the Service Manager and Support Desk Technicians.
22 Celebrating Success 2020 Alumni - What they are doing now Beth Jones 2011-2013 I had wanted to study Medicine since the later years of secondary school, but always assumed it would be out of my grasp. It wasn’t until I got my GCSE results and started at Worcester Sixth Form College that I actually thought it might be possible. I started College in 2011 studying Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Law and Critical Thinking AS Levels. Knowing how competitive medicine was, I knew I was going to be kept very busy alongside my A Levels. Worcester Sixth Form College offered a Medical Ethics Class and Professional Programme, which was perfect for students like me who would benefit from extra opportunities for their university application. They gave me an insight into the ethical and professional side to medicine whilst developing my communication skills which was much appreciated in my following interviews. Through the continued help and support of the careers advisers in College, I was able to secure an offer at Cardiff Medical School. Luckily my A Level results were a match too! I have always been a keen Sportswomen, so fitting in Netball was very important to me, and was a much-needed mid-week relax. The college was very flexible at allowing me to continue with my busy college timetable but still providing me time to represent the College in the Netball team. Over the years I have developed a keen interest in teaching and have helped set up a programme encouraging students from comprehensive colleges to apply to Medicine. This is being developed in numerous schools. After 5 years at Cardiff Medical school, and 3 years working as a junior doctor in the NHS I am now in the process of applying for specialist training. I take every opportunity to return to WSFC to give talks and seminars on what life is likely working as a junior doctor in the NHS.
Celebrating Success 2020 23 Connect with us on LinkedIn and Social Media JJ Kealy 2014-2016 In July 2020 I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a First Class Honours in BSc Economics with Employment Experience. I obtained a degree average of 80.2% which I am extremely proud about - as I have no A Level in Maths! Further to this my placement year working at Lloyds Banking Group was incredibly valuable as I learnt all the soft and hard skills required to go into professional employment upon graduation. I highly recommend students who go to university to apply for things like summer vacation schemes, internships, and, placement years, as they ultimately provide the foundations for you to be ahead of the game when you graduate. Although COVID-19 prematurely ended my tenure as the Club Captain (President) of the Sheffield University Mens Football Club, I was still so proud to have represented one of the biggest sport societies at the University. In February 2021 I started my graduate scheme with Deloitte working within the tax consulting service live. It has been a strange start to life with Deloitte as I have had to adapt to working remotely and experience the challenges that remote work presents, however, the skills I have learnt and the people I have met has meant I have had the best possible start given the circumstances. I have been able to work on a number of large clients across several sectors such as banking, engineering, and pharmaceuticals, which has broadened my knowledge in each industry! Obtaining a graduate scheme at the one of the Big 4 was an extremely proud achievement and I would highly recommend students apply as they have a vast amount of careers for graduates - it’s way more than just accounting! As brighter days start to come up on the horizon, I look forward to taking my first steps in the Deloitte office and meeting my colleagues face to face! I have thoroughly enjoyed my start and I cannot wait to kick on and progress further!
