IN THE VILLAGE Coach Storey ’59 designs Viking football tribute wall BY KRISTEN MOTT THE WALLS OF THE TECH BUILDING look a little different these days thanks to Coach John Storey ’59. In the spring, Coach Storey scoured St. Joseph High School and VASJ yearbooks to find football team pictures. Working with Keener Printing in Euclid, the photos were enlarged and framed, and they now hang in a beautiful display inside the Tech Building. Showcasing the legacy of St. Joseph High School and VASJ football is important to Coach Storey. “We talk about our history all the time. I wanted students to be aware of all the players who have contributed to the Viking football program and our legacy here,” he said. Starting with the 1952 football season, photos on the left side of the wall showcase St. Joseph High School football teams by season, while the right side of the wall highlights VASJ football teams by season. Coach Storey also dedicated a special standalone photo for legendary Coach Bill Gutbrod to recognize his achievements and dedication to the Viking football program. Coach Storey said many visitors to the building have already stopped to take a look at the wall, and he’s excited for students to learn more about the history of the school’s football program as well. “Students have to come in the front door of the Tech Building and walk through this hallway to get to the workout room, so it was a perfect spot,” he said. “I’m sure our students will want to stop and look too, especially since some students had fathers who played here.” VASJ COMMUNITY ENJOYS State Track Medalists NIGHT AT PROGRESSIVE FIELD Several of our Viking student-athletes qualified to compete in the 2021 T hank you to everyone who joined us the evening OHSAA Division II State Track and Field Championships June 4-5. ADMISSIONS Dear Vikings, This past year consisted of virtual shadow days, hybrid learning, virtual open houses and virtual tours. Not being able to meet prospective students and families in person made a year of uncertainty feel like an eternity. Making sure our prospective families were engaged and excited about high school was a challenge. By striving to better understand our community and our families' accessibility, we were able to showcase Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School through virtual events like open houses and shadow days. The most amazing part was watching our current VASJ students use their creative thinking skills to ensure prospective students really understood our family atmosphere and what the Viking Village stands for. The amount of interest we received was truly outstanding. Faith brought us all together in a time when we needed it the most. With the help of students who are members of the National Honor Society, we were Welcome able to hand-deliver personal acceptance packets to our entire incoming freshman class. Making every moment of this school year special for incoming freshmen and transfer students was our main goal. Wel c oming A NEW ADMINISTRATION BY KRISTEN MOTT AS A HIGH SCHOOL ROOTED IN THE MARIANIST AND URSULINE TRADITIONS, educating for adaptation and embracing change are at the core of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School. Change has been at the forefront the last year, as the school continuously shifted plans for curriculum, events and athletics amid the pandemic. Change is also present this school year, as evidenced by our new school administration. At the start of the 2021-22 academic year, VASJ welcomed President Thomas M. Carone, Interim Principal Lorenzo M. Jones, Dean of Academics Patricia Marxen and Dean of Students Michael T. Gavin. Combined, these four administrators bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Viking Village and are working tirelessly to ensure VASJ provides a competitive Catholic education and a supportive, inclusive environment for all of our students. Meet our amazing new administrators below and learn more about their objectives for this school year and beyond. Patricia Marxen: Dean of Academics Patricia Marxen first came to Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in 2000 as an English teacher, taking over as chair in 2003. With a degree in English education from Bowling Green State University, Marxen left VASJ in the late 2000s to join a charter management group, where she focused on school improvement plans for dropout recovery schools. In 2016, she returned home to VASJ to serve as English teacher, department chair and OCSAA chair. Marxen was named VASJ dean of academics for the 2021-22 school year. What motivated you to become an educator? I actually was an international business and economics double major in college. However, I constantly found myself in positions that involved teaching or coaching: being a lead in the tutoring center, teaching an introductory College 101 course to new freshmen, and training new employees at a major hotel chain in the summers. After my junior year and a very boring internship in business, I was forced to reflect on my choices. I went to speak with one of my mentors, who was a TA in the English department, and she actually laughed at me. She said, “I was wondering how long it would take for you to realize that teaching is in your soul.” After reflecting, I realized that nearly everything I had done in my life was somehow connected to helping others grow and succeed. Thank God for that woman. “When [students] are successful based on their definition, then we have done our job well.” PATRICIA MARXEN 14 VASJ MAGAZINE FALL 2021
