The Order of JOPO The Order of jopo award was established in 1974. The medal was originally awarded to past Chairman, Dignitaries, Honoured cities, and long time Carnival workers. In more recent years the medal is now awarded to one person each year. The recipient is someone who has gone above and beyond in their support of Vernon Winter Carnival. Congratulations North Okanagan, your Vernon Winter Carnival has The first letter from the Chair of Carnival made history, being the longest running Winter Carnival in Western Canada. Your Vernon Winter Carnival is a staple in our community and was once labelled “Winter Capital of BC”. How many of us can say that we look forward to the beginning of February each year? The North Okanagan Can!! So many changes have happened over the life of Carnival, starting with our many locations, from a trailer in the downtown Safeway parking lot, to our current location we have kept growing. 2020 Carnival is turning out to be quite a memorable Carnival already! Vernon Winter Carnival was awarded a large grant from the Government of Canada and Western Economic Diversification Canada to assist with promoting Vernon to bring more tourism to our City. The grant also allows us to bring back some of the old events and introduce many more new events. On October 18, 2019 Vernon Winter Carnival was awarded the Tourism Excellence Award by The Great Vernon Chamber of commerce sponsored by Kelowna International Airport. And finally, The City of Vernon and Vernon Winter Carnival entered — 12 —
