20 Graduate Career Guide 2017 / 18 Career Services Graduate Guide The B.Eng (Industrial Engineering) | Curious mind Analyst at RMB Global Markets He nearly became an aircraft engineer, but a sudden interest in the inner workings of the stock markets made him realise that the corporate and investment banking industry is where he wanted to be. Imran ‘traded’ his mechanical engineering degree for an industrial engineering degree and recently joined RMB Global Markets through the RMB Graduate Programme. Imran has always had an interest in the mechanical workings of things – especially aircrafts and jets. He however realised that doing an industrial engineering degree instead would open more doors to him. One such a door was a quick dabble in the real estate and stock , markets, followed by a three-week internship at JP Morgan where he learnt a vast amount about mergers and acquisitions. It was during his time spent at the RMB Winter School that Imran realised the many roles and opportunities that exist in the bank – especially the massive support behind the front-office roles. Imran subsequently joined the RMB Graduate Programme where he is currently gaining first-hand experience of the operations in the bank. His goal is to spend as much time as he can with the RMB traders: “where decisions are made fast and the stakes are high – not to mention the bonuses,” he adds. Imran is full of praise for RMB’s people-driven culture: “RMB staff members are eager to help and teach you. The company expects a . lot from you and you need to prove yourself, but it’s not just all work and no play.”. He hopes to one day leave a legacy behind of a person who inspired and helped others. Be a part of the equation. Visit www.rmb.co.za from 1 June - 14 August to submit your CV.
University of Pretoria 21 Career Services Graduate Guide Learn from graduates Nqoba Manana Job title: Retail Process Engineer at FNB International What did you study? BEng (Chemical Engineering) What is the company culture like? The culture varies from corporate to casual, depending on your department. My line manager promotes innovation and efficiency, so we always feel free to express ourselves, while working hard. Even as a graduate, you can have conversations with the highest-ranking executive without feeling out of place. FNB has a very open culture. What is exciting about work? Encountering all sorts of challenging problems every day and finding novel ways to solve them. I also enjoy learning from my brilliant colleagues. This helps me improve my skills and become much more efficient in what I do. Being part of the FNB International team, I have to find innovative solutions for the FNB subsidiaries in various countries. After a presentation one day, I had the pleasure of having a conversation with the CEO of one of the subsidiaries. He loved my ideas and gave me valuable advice to map the blueprint for my career. It’s crazy how one 30-minute conversation can release so much potential inside you that you didn’t even know you had. My advice to students entering the job market It’s truly a jungle out there; every position has scores of candidates with equally adequate skills. If you’re able to constantly invest in yourself, learn a new skill every month and be willing to put yourself out there (network), then your odds of getting the job increase exponentially. This also makes the switch from student to graduate a lot smoother. Hard work pays off. What surprised you most about entering the working world? Being part of a fantastic team and realising how the team members’ vast journeys and experiences have led them to the same moment as me. Also, the free coffee was a major bonus. What would you have done differently during your years at university? I live my life with a “no-regrets policy”, so nothing major. But I definitely could have done more networking and skills development.
22 Graduate Career Guide 2017 / 18 Career Services Graduate Guide Learn from graduates Sean Peter Steenkamp Job title: Systems Analyst at FNB Life What did you study? BCom Informatics (Hons) What is the company culture like? FNB’s culture, in one word, is “energetic”. Everyone you meet is passionate about what they do. The culture is about going beyond what is expected, and you meet amazing people along the way. There is always someone you can speak to, whether it is a security guard or the CEO. What is exciting about work? It’s exciting having the platform to engage with so many different kinds of people from so many different backgrounds. Everyone is energetic and there is always someone to help you turn your grand ideas into reality. In the FNB Graduate Programme, you learn to manage your finances, to pitch ideas and to run projects in a large organisation. It ultimately depends on how much effort you put in. I like to think that success is performance based. The week before a system release is always very interesting. There is so much to be done and everyone jumps in and helps wherever they can. Another exciting day is when we discuss the vision of FNB’s innovative culture and the various methods in which the organisation encourages innovation. What would you have done differently during your years at university? Create more. You have the luxury of time at university. I would have spent more time turning my ideas into reality and learning new skills (work-related or not). Once you’re in the routine of learning and creating new things it is a lot easier to continue doing this while you’re at work. The advantage of learning new skills is that it will help you develop yourself, as well as build a well-rounded CV, because everyone has a degree nowadays. Find a way to give yourself the competitive advantage. What surprised you most about entering the working world? I was surprised by how many meetings I had to attend. Juggling training, work and meetings is quite interesting. You learn very quickly how to manage your time.

24 Graduate Career Guide 2017 / 18 Career Services Graduate Guide Learn from graduates Sakina Majam Job title : Relationship Analyst at FNB Business What did you study? BCom Agribusiness Management What is the company culture like? FNB initiates a drive and hunger in each of us to become outstanding achievers. FNB encourages all employees, no matter what their role or job title, to come up with innovative ideas. These ideas are acknowledged and rewarded too. There are many personal development opportunities for employees. What is exciting about work? I get to see the fruition of all my hard work, which makes the working process exciting and something to look forward to. In my team, we are responsible for a client portfolio of businesses with a R10 to R40 million turnover. What makes it so interesting is the fact that our clients’ portfolios are so diverse, and you need to research their type of work in order to help them with their banking needs. One day you are researching a crocodile- breeding farm, and the next day it is a cyber security firm. My advice to students entering the job market It’s not a “must” to apply for a job that is in your field of study, because many companies look to employ people who think differently and will look at issues from a completely different perspective. FNB’s CEO, Jacques Celliers, is an engineer, which tells you a lot. You can ask professionals you know to help edit your CV, as your CV is the first impression you give. What surprised you most about entering the working world? I was extremely surprised by how people with different titles are treated as equals. If you are a manager or a cleaner, you will be treated with the same respect. FNB encourages this type of behaviour. What would you have done differently during your years at university? I would have applied for more internships or holiday jobs as this helps with the jump between university and work. It adds experience to your CV, which can give you a competitive advantage over other job applicants, and also help you realise what type of work you prefer.

26 Graduate Career Guide 2017 / 18 Career Services Graduate Guide Learn from graduates Ashley Jade Saffy Job Title: Actuarial Analyst at FNB Credit Risk and Analytics What did you study? BSc Actuarial and Financial Mathematics What is the company culture like? FNB has an incredible company culture where everyone is treated with respect. FNB’s leadership looks past hierarchy. Our CEO and executive committee dedicate time to us and truly care about our opinions. I’m excited to go to work every single day and that is largely due to the positive environment and fantastic company culture. What is exciting about work? I’m passionate about the analytics that I do and have already been involved in some very interesting projects. Within the first week, one of the managers gave us new grads in the business unit a challenging project that required us to analyse all the transactional data over the past five years. I managed to use time series analysis to fit a moving average model to predict future credit card cash withdrawals. I’m currently working on a project that is focused on understanding customer behaviour and the perceived risk associated with credit. Between interacting with extraordinary individuals, presenting to the Executive Committee and being exposed to interesting Big Data, I find something exciting about every day. My advice to students entering the job market Be open to change – the ability to adapt is key to success. Studying for a career and doing the job are two very different things. Your success at university doesn’t determine your success at work. What does is your passion and determination to learn. In starting your career, know that it will be a steep learning curve at first, but you’ll quickly get up to speed. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, as nobody expects you to understand everything at first. What would you have done differently during your years at university? Most of it didn’t go as planned, in fact a lot went wrong, but I didn’t give up and I ended up just where I wanted to be. I learnt something from every obstacle along the way. If I had to change something, it would be to put less pressure on myself. I used to stress about stress, even before there was stress to stress about!
University of Pretoria 27 Career Services Graduate Guide Learn from graduates Yuvika Singh Job title: Digital Marketing Specialist at FNB Brand Management What did you study? BCom Marketing Management (Hons) What is the company culture like? I was delighted to find how FNB encourages growth through its owner-manager culture. You have the flexibility to innovate and drive projects through to execution while still receiving guidance. It’s a dynamic environment that is conducive to growth, and right from the start everyone is really helpful. What is exciting about work? Being part of the FNB digital marketing team gives me the opportunity to bring new ideas to life on digital platforms and to work closely with various FNB business units to integrate content. Working with different business units allows me to gain insight into many areas of business that I would otherwise not have had. There are always exciting new projects being launched and there is always change. FNB has been ranked Africa’s most powerful banking brand and the fourth most powerful banking brand in the world in 2017. Being awarded numerous accolades, with most innovative bank being one, we have a mindset and work ethic of constant change. To be a good marketer, you need to be able to adapt to change. Each day brings a wealth of information that contributes to making tomorrow more creative. My advice to students entering the job market • Stay up-to-date with developments in your field of study, as well as the macro trends. • Gain some experience in your field while studying, as this will hold you in good stead in the workplace. • Don’t be afraid to be thrown in at the deep end as this gives you the opportunity to display resilience. What surprised you most about entering the working world? The fact that there are always people willing to help you and share their knowledge. What would you have done differently during your years at university? I would have dedicated more time to gaining a deeper insight into fast-paced technological advances.
28 Graduate Career Guide 2017 / 18 Career Services Graduate Guide Learn from graduates Jarrod Germs Job title: System Analyst in FNB Online Banking What did you study? BCom Informatics (Hons) What is the company culture like? FNB has an owner-manager culture and, as a graduate, we are able to get involved in as much as we want. We can take on new and challenging tasks with guidance from our manager who has complete faith in us, and within the next month, we’ll be heading up projects of our own. What is exciting about work? It’s exciting to work on big projects that are drastically changing banking, and being able to see this change first-hand. I’m just beginning my graduate project for the Department of Home Affairs fingerprint link. The most interesting day so far was being thrown in at the deep end with a coding assignment to understand the structure of banking systems. Although I touched on coding at varsity, being an analyst and not a developer, this was never a skill I thought I would use in the workplace. It was a fun and challenging few days figuring out how it all works. My advice to students entering the job market Pay close attention to your surroundings to gather as much information as possible and network with your peers in other business units to get a better understanding of the bank as a whole. Ask questions, as people are willing to explain things you may be unsure of. What surprised you most about entering the working world? The mutual respect in the bank was a big eye-opener for me. As a graduate who was new and had minimal experience, I assumed that I wouldn’t be taken seriously, but this was not the case. No matter who I spoke to, I was treated like any other member of my system analyst team, with the more experienced people asking me questions and guiding me through projects as I found my feet. From the first day I was made to feel that I belonged in the team. What would you have done differently during your years at university? I would have interned during the holidays to gain experience to help with the transition to the workplace.
University of Pretoria 29 Career Services Graduate Guide Learn from graduates Ina Christine Guldenpfennig Job title: Process Engineer at FNB Connect What did you study? BEng (Industrial Engineering) What is the company culture like? FNB has an owner-manager culture where each business unit functions as a business on its own. This ensures that the individual units don’t disappear in the big company, so that they don’t need to rely on others to get tasks done. There is an open-door policy and employees are able to pop into the boss’s office at any time. Innovation drives FNB’s solutions and encourages employees to have their own ideas. What is exciting about work? Everyone is willing to help and teach you about all the processes (there are a lot). In the banking environment, there is so much more than meets the eye. FNB offers banking services, but they also sell FNB smart devices. This is exciting for an industrial engineer as it involves supply chain management, process mapping, re-engineering and operations management. I don’t have to go to another company if I decide to change direction; FNB has it all. FNB also provides us with the opportunity to submit our own ideas and make a big difference. As a graduate, I know that I can make a big difference within the bank. My advice to students entering the job market • Take external courses to broaden your management or programming skills. • Focus on your first impression and make it count. • Apply at FNB, because they offer one of the best graduate programmes in South Africa. What surprised you most about entering the working world? That age is just a number and it’s not that hard to have a casual conversation with an older person. Most students are intimidated when they have to engage in casual conversations with an older person. It is something that students should learn to “forget”, because we have much more in common than we think. What would you have done differently during your years at university? I would have focused more on studying in my first year and completed external programming courses. Now that I’m working I plan to take a few online html courses.
