CEO BLAKE MATRAY DEPARTS DOGS FOR BETTER LIVES ON A HIGH NOTE W e have some news to share with you. Blake Matray, our past President and CEO, bid farewell to the staff, volunteers, and supporters of Dogs for Better Lives on March 9, 2018. Ron Holzkamp, Chairman of the Board of Directors said, “It’s heartening to know that Blake is leaving the organization on a high note, just three weeks removed from an event which raised a record $125,000 to benefit Dogs for Better Lives and our nationally renowned Hearing Assistance Dog program.” Blake shared that, “A rare opportunity presented itself to return to Alaska for a position that allows me to spend more time with my family. I feel better about leaving knowing our new 40-kennel Second Training Facility is nearing completion. The kennel will allow Dogs for Better Lives to rescue many more dogs and help many more children, adults, and families in the years to come. I’m proud to have been a part of that advancement.” Under Blake’s leadership, we’ve seen annual Assistance Dog placements significantly grow and a successful organizational rebranding under a new name has been accomplished. In spring 2016, we placed our first Autism Assistance Dog in southern Oregon and the program continues to grow across the state. Meanwhile, annual support is steadily increasing year-over-year. “In his nearly four years leading Dogs for the Deaf, now Dogs for Better Lives, Blake has accomplished so much,” said Ron. “He leaves big shoes to fill. Blake will be missed by staff, board, philanthropic partners, and community members who got to know him while he was representing Dogs for Better Lives. We will soon begin a national search for Blake’s successor and in the interim, as chair, I will function as acting CEO.” Ron continued, “Both Blake and I deeply appreciate you and your continued financial support of Dogs for Better Lives. Your passionate commitment over time has helped to change lives for the better – one dog and one client at a time. In the end, it’s really all about the dogs we rescue, breed, and professionally train for their tremendous impact on the lives of people in need.” We’ll continue to rescue dogs suitable for all of our programs, and we’ll always remain committed to finding a forever home for every dog we rescue. As we increase our placement of Assistance Dogs, we’ll be rescuing more and working even harder to maintain our 4-star rating with Charity Navigator. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in the mission of Dogs for Better Lives. Sincerely, Blake E. DBL NEWS HARLEY & HALO: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES Well folks, it’s official: Harley and Halo graduated from their Foster Puppy Program training and have moved on to the next step in their journey: Assistance Dog training. The brother and sister duo have been paired with our energetic and enthusiastic certified trainers Jess and Jenny. These two new teams have enjoyed spending time getting to know each other. We are excited to watch Harley and Halo continue their journey and blossom into Assistance Dogs who will go on to change lives. Stay tuned as their stories continue! By the time she was in college, she struggled to understand her classroom lectures. Diana was steadily going deaf, yet her doctors were not certain why. Hearing door knocks or even the phone ring became increasingly difficult for her. Diana noted, “People would say that they came over to visit, but they couldn’t get me to come to the door.” That’s when Diana decided to apply for a Hearing Dog from Dogs for the Deaf. 10 years have passed and life for Diana has significantly improved with little Jim by her side. DBL NEWS JANINE BOL MOVES TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Peanut butter wafting down the hallway, dog kibble in my desk drawer, and a big dog bed in my office is just a glimpse of what is unique to a Finance Director’s office at Dogs for Better Lives. It is truly special. “Working at DBL speaks to my heart as I feel a strong sense of responsibility to do my very best for this organization and to support our clients’ needs” For the past five years, I have had the privilege to work for this impactful organization with its dynamic staff and talented board of directors as we have grown and moved forward towards achieving major milestones with our new programs, strategic plan, and new training facility building. My position has included the financial and human resources responsibilities at DBL with the opportunity to work closely with staff in all departments and provide financial information for our team to make sound strategic business decisions. Working at DBL speaks to my heart as I feel a strong sense of responsibility to do my very best for this Janine & Vega, 2013 organization and to support our clients’ needs. I am humbled by their personal stories, the amazing work of our certified assistance dogs and the considerable spirit and generosity of our volunteers and donors. Prior to arriving at DBL, I have had several career opportunities that all provided wonderful background for my work here. Originally working in the hospitality industry in San Diego, then as the CFO for the community of Rancho Santa Fe, and 16 years owning a livestock alpaca business in the Rogue Valley – all came together with my work here to serve people, animals, and community. And now the time has come for me to return to SoCal to live closer to family and to share with them in new adventures. I wish to thank our clients, donors, board, and staff for all you have shared with me and for what I have learned during my time at DBL. It has been a privilege. Dogs for Better Lives’ Assistance Dogs International (ADI) accredited dog training programs are significant, and the organization is financially sound. The future is bright – I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for DBL! VOLUNTEER S P OT L I G H T CAROL COCHRAN Twenty-one years ago, Ron and I retired to Medford from Mountain View, California. It’s a good fit for us, we really love the easy-going lifestyle here. This year marks my eighth year of volunteering at Dogs for Better Lives as a Thursday morning dog walker. I love every minute of it! Where else can you see wildlife and help the sweetest, smartest dogs on the planet? This is due to the awesome trainers, kennel and administrative staff. I’ll volunteer here until I drop! In 2012, I was honored and thrilled to adopt Ranger, an adorable little Career Change poodle. He’s the best dog ever and is so smart, cuddly, and playful. I’ve been an artist for more than 30 years, and my favorite subjects are pets. I’ve offered to paint pet portraits with half the proceeds going to Dogs for Better Lives. If interested, you can view my work online at https://www.carolcochran.com/ W e love our volunteers who walk the dogs every day at our facility, and we are certain that the dogs love them even more! B AC K IN T H E GR O OVE WITH PRINGLES The challenges faced by people living with hearing loss are widespread. For many, the struggle entails not only the difficulty of missing sounds in daily life but also feeling less connected to people and less aware of the environment around them. While hearing aids are certainly a tremendous benefit for people with hearing loss, they do not alleviate all Sheryl with Pringles the obstacles. Even wearing hearing aids, the effort to hear and understand what is going on around them can be draining. However taking aids out can mean cutting off that contact to the world of sound. “I am excited about getting back into the groove with a Hearing Dog again.” Sheryl, in North Carolina, knows this feeling firsthand. She described it as “exhausting”, and when she’s at home she sometimes needs to take her aids out. This is when having a Hearing Dog can make a world of difference. In 2004, Sheryl received Shadow, her first Hearing Dog. Shadow immediately brought so much to her life. CAREER CHANGE DOGS Barbara Regier began volunteering for Dogs for Better Lives in 2006. During that time, Barb has fostered 18 Career Change Dogs, essentially freeing up more space in the kennels that allows us to rescue, train and place more dogs. Not all dogs thrive in a kennel environment. Dogs that are fostered learn house manners, generally become more confident, are better socialized and are less stressed. People often ask Barb, “How do you do it? How do you take these dogs into your home and then let them go?” She tells them, “I look at them as guests. CL IE N T ’S CORNER GRIEVING MY HEARING DOG’S DEATH By Bert Lederer, Client and Volunteer Ambassador Warren, my Hearing Dog and constant companion, died suddenly in May 2016, a little over 11 years from the day Dogs for the Deaf (DFD) placed him with me. I had the same feelings of loss as when my adult son died in 2006. Grief is grief! How we handle our grief in our quest to heal is the key to good mental health. Each of us grieves in our own way and seeking help from a professional is a must, if needed, to ease the Hearing Dog Warren burden as we attempt to cope. I am fortunate in that my daughter, Melanie, with whom I the various stages of grief and how to deal with am very close, has been a successful practicing them. These discussions have been therapeutic psychologist for some time and we often discuss for me, though I remain as dad and certainly not a patient! Melanie specializes in the field of Positive Psychology, which focuses on human happiness. Its tenets are gratitude for the past, zest in the present, and hope for the future. Thus, I focus on my gratitude and thankfulness for the times I had with Warren over the years, which enables me to move on rapidly to the present and enjoy my blessings. To some extent, I am still grieving the loss of Warren. Grief never stops, though the pain usually diminishes over time, particularly if you can move into the final grief stage, acceptance, and mostly stay there, as I have. Nonetheless, whenever I look at pictures of Warren, I have a pang of sadness. Absent that, I would be abnormal! Right after Warren died I gave his bed, bowl, and toys to friends with dogs, basically removing everyday reminders. I must admit that I kept his leash and vest in the closet and a picture of him on my desk. I also kept a copy of the children’s book my wife, Claydene, wrote about him and purchased a stone in DBLs “Field of Memories”. The inscription is the title of the book. A M B A S S ADO R S P OT L I G H T SUSAN H. left pamphlets and business cards at the offices and veterinarians I frequent. The Veterans Administration office in St. Petersburg invited me to attend a Health Seminar to inform veterans about Dogs for Better Lives. I handed out pens, magnets and general information on how to apply for a professionally trained Assistance Dog. Last year, I was invited to attend a Good Sam’s Rendezvous at Lake Okeechobee, Florida. I met many people there, including the event sponsors and Dogs for Better Lives representatives. Fizza enjoyed the attention as she sat by my side! F OST E R P UP PY PROGRAM The story of Ace and Isabel is very near and dear to me and is why I chose to share this story. Ace was the very last of Wynne’s puppies to find a foster home, so I brought him home until I could find the perfect foster puppy raiser for him. He settled in quickly with my clan of misfits, and even with the 2 a.m. potty breaks and my (many) missing left shoes, Ace was the perfect puppy. I continued to search relentlessly for a foster home for Ace until the day Isabel found us! Her mother saw one of our Facebook posts featuring little Ace and showed it to Isabel. She instantly responded to the post inquiring about him, and soon came to DBL to escort Ace to his new foster home. Since then, Ace has enjoyed the college campus life attending Isabel’s classes and ensuring that she studies and does her homework. Talk about teacher’s pet! We really could not have found a better foster home for Ace; Isabel is a great foster puppy raiser and I look forward to watching them grow together as a team. Thanks to Isabel, Ace will grow into an amazing Assistance Dog Isabel with Foster Puppy Ace who will change someone’s life for the better. - Hannah Crane, Foster Puppy Program Coordinator “Having Ace has been such a wonderful and positive experience for me and my family. He is such a loving and fun puppy to be around, not only when he is training but also around the home. As a college student I thought that it may be hard to have a puppy that is training in class or on campus, but I have found that it is not that difficult. Ace is a very well-behaved puppy. I have never had any problems with him or his training. We learn tons of new training techniques each week that he picks up on very quickly, then we apply those to our training outing and while I’m on campus. One thing I will say, though, is that as a foster parent you have to be ready for lots of questions and a lot of people wanting to distract your dog, especially for me being Ace with Hannah’s misfits on a college campus. However, I must say he has helped me learn a lot about caring and training for a dog, and I am very happy to have him. Everyone that meets Ace instantly loves him and says how great of a dog he is going to be.“ -Isabel, Foster Puppy Raiser Page 26 CANINEL ISTENER SPRING 2018 1-800-990-3647
