City of Fort St. John | 2021 By-election Candidate Profiles 1 Introduction To assist voters in finding information about 2021 By-election, the City of Fort St. John has produced this Candidate Profile Guide. All candidates were provided the opportunity to submit a brief Candidate Profile and photograph to let voters know about themselves and their platforms. The views and opinions expressed in the profile statements are those of the candidates. The profiles have not been edited in any way. The profiles are in the order that their nomination documents were received. By-election Information The 2021 Municipal By-election will take place on May 15, 2021 to fill one (1) vacant Councillor position. Voting Opportunities General Voting Day There is no need to pre-register to vote as the registration Saturday, May 15, 2021 | 8 am - 8 pm of all electors for this by-election will take place at the time Pomeroy Sport Centre (9324 - 96 Street) of voting. Electors must make a declaration stating that you meet the following requirements: Advance Voting • 18 years of age or older on general voting day Wednesday, May 5, 2021 | 8 am - 8 pm • Canadian citizen Pomeroy Sport Centre (9324 - 96 Street) • resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately preceding Advance Voting the day of registration (November 14, 2020) Wednesday, May 12, 2021 | 8 am - 8 pm • resident of OR registered owner of real property in the City Pomeroy Sport Centre (9324 - 96 Street) of Fort St. John for at least 30 days immediately preceding Special Voting Opportunity* the day of registration (April 14, 2021), and Thursday, May 13, 2021 | 10 - 11:30 am • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any Peace Villa Care Centre (8407 - 112 Avenue) other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law. Special Voting Opportunity* Thursday, May 13, 2021 | 2:30 - 3:30 pm Resident electors must produce 2 pieces of identification Peace Lutheran Apartments (9812 - 108 Avenue) (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and Special Voting Opportunity* identity. City of Fort St. John | 2021 By-election Candidate Profiles 3 Councillor Candidate TOM WHITTON As a father, spouse, and long-term resident of Fort St. John. I have always felt a deep connection to this community; the energy and spark that is ever present. This connection has led me to want to add my voice to the advocacy that is necessary for residents. I grew up in a unique upbringing, with my immediate family being a mixture of metis and european. My eldest brother having a developmental disability. I have learned that humanity is filled with diversity and judgement. If I can use my position in the community to ensure inclusivity in all aspects; that is my desire. Heavily involved in the community through being a cofounder and ex executive of the Pheonix Volunteer Club and co creator of Caremongering FSJ. A family man that spends his time helping other through volunteering in many ways and when I am not doing that I'm spending time with my wife and 3 kids or nephews. I am running for Councillor because this is another outlet that will grant me the ability to make an even bigger difference in our Community than I already Do. City of Fort St. John | 2021 By-election Candidate Profiles 5 Councillor Candidate SARAH MACDOUGALL Sarah MacDougall relocated to Fort St. John in 2007 from Nova Scotia, to accept a job with Northern Health. She and her husband, Scott quickly fell in love with the community Fort St. John offered, and decided to stay and build their lives here. They went on to have 4 amazing daughters. Her parents eventually followed, establishing a multi generation family here. Sarah was employed by Northern Health for 13 years, in a variety of roles. Initially working directly with the public, she later moved into a role focusing on policy development and project work. Eventually promoted CONTACT INFORMATION to a leadership role where she used strategic and critical thinking and an open-minded, collaborative and continuous learner approach. City of Fort St. John | 2021 By-election Candidate Profiles 6 Councillor Candidate TRYSTAN JONES Trystan Jones is a 24 year old activist, storyteller, health care worker and speaker. As an Anti-Racism activist he has helped to lead/organize Anti-Racism Protests and was recently chosen to speak at TEDxSFU’s 10 Year Anniversary Conference this past November. Trystan will be graduating with his degree in Political Science this June. Trystan grew up in Rose Prairie, just north of Fort St. John. He spent his early childhood breed and raising race horses, while also nurturing a love for community theatre. Trystan’s passion for Social Justice was ignited at Upper Pine Elementary, CONTACT INFORMATION and stoked with debate in classes at North Peace Secondary. Working in various clinics at St Paul’s Hospital in an office role, he has seen firsthand the devastation COVID19 has wrecked on the nation. Trystan also experienced the dual-pandemic, the Racism pointed towards Asians out of frustration towards pandemic measures and lockdowns. He knows much work needs to be done to ensure that everyone is treated equally, and he hopes to bring compassion, storytelling, and a whole lot of courage to FSJ City Council.
