Canadian Days CANADIAN DAYS GRAND MARSHAL When selecting the grand marshal this year, the Canadian Days Committee wanted the person to have an association with the theme, ‘Time for Fun in ’21’, and the connection of time and history. Who better to fit that connection than Curt Loschy, President of the Little Canada Historical Society? Curt became the Executive Director of the Historical Society in 2016 and is currently its President. In 1950, Curt’s family moved to Little Canada near the corner of Labore and Edgerton. He said it was the best place to grow up in the 50s and 60s because all you needed was a bicycle and the world was your oyster; you could see all your friends and go to Lake Gervais. After he retired in 2015, as project manager for AeroSystems Engineering, he often visited with Jean Donovan and her friends at the Little Canada History Center. They suggested that he join the Historical Society to give back to the community where he grew up. He was impressed with their mission of preserving the history of Little Canada’s founding families. That group had the vision to build the History Center attached to City Hall with a loan from the City, raised funds by selling memorial blocks for a mural on the entry wall and through charitable gambling, and were able to pay off the loan and donate the building to the City. He now appreciates that vision as the city staff is extremely supportive with services and maintenance. The Little Canada Historical Society focuses on the genealogy of the founding families and other longtime residents rather than serving as a museum, although it does have several interesting displays. There is a monument in St. John’s Cemetery that lists the names of those founding families. Their book “A Voyageur’s Vision” is one of the very few resources available about Benjamin and Genevieve Gervais and other early settlers of the area. The book is a collection of the stories of the founding families as written by themselves. Curt and his wife, Mary, now live in Roseville. They look forward to greeting people Friday, July 30, from 6 - 7 PM at a cake reception in Spooner Park, along with the button design winner, Ella Haraldson. He will also be in the parade on Sunday, August 1. Congratulations, Curt! Pictured: Historical Society Executive Director, Curt Loschy, stand- ing next to the entry way mural at the History Center. PIONEER PARK MASTER PLAN UPDATE The Phase I Pioneer Park Master Plan continues to be refined and is nearing the path to completion. Over 18 months of feedback from the community, neighbors, park stakeholders, local youth, Park & Recreation Commissioners, City Council members, and city staff has been gathered to help form the plan for the future of the park. After reviewing the feedback, the plan has shifted from a destination park with a large playground and splash pad to focusing on enhancing and updating the current features with an upgraded playground and smaller water feature for park users to enjoy. A common theme in the feedback received was to create an upgraded and welcoming park for Little Canada residents and the local community to enjoy. Thank you to everyone that provided feedback in the most recent survey and online interactive map. Park & Recreation Commissioners will be at Canadian Days on Saturday, July 31 from 10 AM - 2 PM to share concept designs and discuss future amenities with park users. Stop by and say ‘Hi’ while you are enjoying the Canadian Days festivities. WELCOME NEW EMPLOYEES PUBLIC WORKS APPRENTICE The City recently welcomed Mike Turgerson as the Public Works Apprentice. Mike worked as a summer seasonal employee for the City of Shoreview’s Parks Department and enjoyed it so much that he decided he would like a career in the Public Works field.
