    Hosting a major cricket event
    during the ‘Summer of Cricket’
    Unit Description
During the Australian summer, cricket events dominate not only the
sporting calendar, but also the cultural and tourism market place.
A range of cricket events take place including; major international matches
attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators, shorter events, such as the
Big Bash T20 league, as well as literally thousands of smaller club fixtures.
Each event, whether it be a major international match, a domestic final or a
local U/10’s cricket game, requires planning and preparation.
The more significant events, such as the Big Bash final or Boxing Day Test match attract
huge interest, not only across the country but in many cases globally. As such these events
are big business, with State governments eagerly competing to host these events because of
the economic benefits that flow from hosting them.
For each event there is often significant interest from the business community wanting to
benefit from sponsoring, cities and councils looking to capture the visitor dollar and even local
clubs wanting to attract revenue through canteen sales. As such, cricket is big business.
You will take on the role of a researcher for the business community and investigate the
benefits and challenges of hosting a major cricket event.
For a great overview of this unit of work, view the film at www.cricketsmart.cricket.com.au.

    Unit Expectations
In completing this unit, you will be expected to:
      • Understand the difference between needs and wants
      • Understand the different types of economic resources
      • Explain why choices need to be made about economic resources
      • Show the opportunities presented to members of a community by hosting a major cricket
event, such as the Big Bash final, a Test Match, the first ever Women’s Big Bash League
game or the domestic one-day contest, the Matador Cup
      • Evaluate the benefits and challenges of hosting an
        international event
      • Design a presentation to show the findings
        of your investigation
      • Use Information and Communication Technologies to

Major Assessment Task
Investigating and evaluating the benefits of hosting a major cricket event
This unit casts you in the role of a researcher for the business community of your nearest
host city. A host city is a venue where at least one major cricket event will be played. Your job
is to investigate the hosting of a major cricket event in your nearest host city, and to report to
the business community on your findings. During the unit, you will seek to understand:
   • the complexities of hosting a major cricket event in terms of logistics, accommodation,
venue suitability, media requirements and much more
   • the economic resources needed, and
   • the role of the local business community in such a project

You will evaluate your findings and make a judgement on the benefits and challenges of this
venture. You will ultimately present your recommendations to the class, who represent the
‘business community’.

Task A
You will collate parts of your class work and present it at the end of the unit. You will submit
the following items:
  i. Major cricket event Treasure Hunt (Activity 2B)
ii. Terms and Definitions Table (Activity 3A)
iii. Economic Resources Table (Activity 3B)
iv. A PCQ of the Stakeholders (Activity 5)
  v. An Excel expenses spreadsheet (Activity 6)
vi. A Concept Map (Activity 7) about the finances in one of the following areas:
      • tickets
      • sponsors
      • local businesses
      • transport to the event
vii. A picture montage (Activity 10) of the needs and wants of a cricket fan attending your
       selected event
viii. An Extent Barometer showing your final decision (Activity 11)

Task B
You will deliver a 5-10 minute group presentation to the local ‘business community’
addressing the focus question: to what extent will hosting a major cricket event be a positive
thing for our nearest host city?
To do this, you will take on the role of a researcher and:
  • Investigate what is involved in hosting a major cricket event.
  • Evaluate to what extent hosting a major cricket event will be positive for your nearest host
    city.
  • Design and implement a presentation to convince this city’s business community of your
    findings about hosting the event.
  • Present your findings to the class who take the role as members of the ‘business
    community’ of this city.

An Overview of a major cricket event in Australia
Each summer Australia plays host to numerous cricket events. These include the
international, where one or two Test playing cricket nations tour for a series of matches
called ‘Test matches’, through to domestic games. A Test Match can go for five consecutive
days and as such are valued events for the cities that host these games, especially if the
visiting teams are well supported by travelling fans such as England’s ‘Barmy Army’ or
    India’s ‘Swami Army’.
Other major events include the Big Bash League (men’s and women’s), where large crowds
gather to watch teams representing each capital city over a three to four hour game. These
games have high television ratings and as such are sought after by advertisers and sponsors.
Lower profile events may be held away from the main capital centres, yet these are still
significant events and are sought after by local councils and businesses. An example is the
Matador Cup, which is a cricket carnival bringing together the state cricket teams to play in a
round robin tournament at the one venue. You can imagine that a tournament such as this is
highly sought after by regional centres.
Other events, such as the National Indigenous Cricket carnival, the Imparja Cup, are keenly
sought after by Councils looking to attract events.

To many, the Australian summer is known as ‘the summer of cricket’ and the jewel in
the crown of the cricket calendar is the Boxing Day Test Match. This match is played in
Melbourne every year starting on Boxing Day.
Suppose you are an Indian cricket supporter who arrives in Melbourne on December 20 to
support your team in the Boxing Day Test Match. You fly from New Delhi, and you will fly
home from Melbourne on January 2 after your team plays in the Boxing Day Test. Information
about the MCG can be found at www.mcg.org.au.
Apart from your return trip to India, you will need money for other activities while you are in
Melbourne such as a sight-seeing tour of Melbourne. You also spend $22 a day on public
transport. Your accommodation was part of your package deal, and averages out at $110
per night. You have to pay for food and drink, and you average $7.50 for breakfast, $9.75 for
lunch and $15 for dinner. You also consume $15 worth of snacks and drinks during the day.
You like to support your team, buy presents for your family, and invest in memorabilia, so you
purchase the following items on your trip: (visit www.swamiarmy.com/merchandise/ and

In order to stay in touch with your family, you use an internet café every day for 45 minutes at
a cost of $10 per hour. You also have a $60 per month pre-paid phone account for which you
had to pay for two months.
Other costs not listed above, average out at $12.50 per day.
Your task is to create a spreadsheet of costs for your trip. You will use simple formulas to
calculate the amounts, and create a graph to represent your data. You will need to follow the
tutorial provided to learn how to use the Excel Software package. A substitute for Excel is
Google Spreadsheet, and most of the actions will look the same.
The instructions are on the next page.
Remember, any cricket fan will have to keep to a budget, even on the trip of a lifetime!

Money Matters – creating an expense spreadsheet in Excel
In this activity, we will use formulas to automatically calculate data and represent it on a
graph using Microsoft Excel. The finished product will look like this:

After naming four columns as per the example above (Items, Per Day, Per Week, Total), list all
the expense items in column A under ‘Items’.
               Step 1:
Align items in column A to the left, and items in columns B, C and D to the right by
selecting each column and clicking on the align option.
               Step 2:
Select the whole table and add a border around each cell as per the example.
Select the last row and change line style to thick. Do the same for the fourth
column. This option is located in the border drop down menu.
               Step 3:
Select all the cells that will house money. From the ‘Number’ drop down, choose
currency. Then, when you add all the amounts, they will automatically generate
a dollar sign ($) and currency format. Therefore, if you type in 2350, the cell will
               convert it to $23.50.
               Step 4:
Type the ‘per day’ expenses in column B. In cell C6, type the formula =B6*7 and
press ‘Enter’. This will calculate the expenses per week, and put that cost in cell C6.
               Step 5:
Click in cell C6. Hover over the little square in the bottom right-hand corner of the
cell. A ‘plus sign’ will show. Click and drag the square to the second-last row (not
the ‘Totals’ row). This applies the formula in cell C6 to all the cells in the column.
               Step 6:
You use a similar process to calculate the ‘Total’ column. The tournament length is
45 days, so the formula is =B6*45. Then, drag the cell square down as you did in
the step above to populate all the cells in the ‘Total’ column. Stop at the second-
               last cell in that column.
               Step 7:
To find the totals for each column, use the ‘SUM’ formula. In the example above,
I will put =SUM(B6:B13). This means that Excel will calculate the sum of the
amounts in each cell from B6 to B13. Repeat this formula for the remaining two
columns, making sure that the cells for ‘per week’ start with C and the cells for
               ‘Total’ start with D.

Activity 7: Financial Effects of hosting a major cricket event
Draw a Concept Map to show how hosting a major cricket event (Boxing Day Test,
Imparja Cup, Matador Cup, Big Bash league and so on) will have a financial effect on
your community. Your teacher will explain how to draw a Concept Map. You choose one
topic but will see the results of everyone else’s work too. Use a digital tool, such as www.
text2mindmap.com to prepare your final copy. This will be useful in your presentation to the
business group.
Important: Ensure you view the supporting resource for this unit of work at
www.cricketsmart.cricket.com.au.

1. Tickets
  • How much is a ticket to the event? What concessions or special prices are there?
  • What do you get for your ticket? For example, admission, off-field entertainment, free
public transport could be included in your ticket price
  • Why are some tickets to certain positions in the stadium more expensive than others?
  • What costs need to be covered by the revenue raised from the tickets?
  • Calculate an approximate average price of a ticket. If the stadium is at full capacity, how
much revenue will be raised? What happens if the stadium is at 70 per cent capacity?

2. Sponsors
  • Who are the sponsors?
  • What industries do the sponsors represent (e.g. beverage, airline, car manufacturing, etc.)?
  • What do they gain from sponsoring a cricket event? See if you can match sponsors to an
    event.
  • What risks do sponsors take?
  • How do they promote their products?

3. Local Businesses
  • Which local businesses are most likely to benefit financially?
  • In what ways will they gain?
  • Which types of businesses would benefit/be adversely affected from an influx of tourists
and media attention (e.g. some businesses may be affected by road closures, disruptions
    to normal routine, etc.)?
  • In what ways are they likely to lose income?
  • What resources do local businesses need to make the most of this opportunity?

4. Transport to the event
  • What are the types of transport people could use to travel to the match?
  • What will the City Council do to manage more people?
  • Are there special tickets available for tourists if they are here for a week or longer?
  • What other things will ensure safety and easy travel?
  • Are there road closures around the venue when there’s a big event?
  • Are police and security officers required to manage crowds?

Activity 9: Needs, wants and value
Needs are different to wants, and price and value depend on many things.

     Story time:
A grandpa wants to take his grandson and granddaughter to the a Big Bash game between
the Sydney Sixers and the Brisbane Heat. Grandpa loves the game of cricket. He coaches a
team and still manages the local club. He has a wonderful memory of accompanying his own
father to see Sir Donald Bradman play at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The price of tickets and transport won’t matter to him. The real value of the day for Grandpa
is the chance to create memories with his family. On this day, he wants his grandchildren to
have a fantastic time and to love the game as much as he does. Although Grandpa feels this
so strongly, that to him the experience is more like a need, we classify this as a want, as it is
     not needed for survival.
What if there was a really bad storm on the way home? If Grandpa and the children were
caught in the rain, all other wants fade because their need to stay safe becomes most
     important.
