                          AN AFTERNOON OF
                          INSIGHTS AND HISTORY
A bespoke afternoon with exclusive access to the
Divinity School at Oxford, a Chaucer home, along
with expert insights and conversation with a world
leading historian and theologian, author Reverend
                          Dr. Allan Doig.

In A History of the Church through its Buildings,
author Allan Doig explores twelve great examples
of churches that reveal key moments and themes
in the human story of the Church. Most of those
examples are royal and imperial foundations but
one is set deep in the Oxfordshire countryside in
the village of Ewelme. The Foundation of God’s
House was established there by Alice Chaucer,
daughter of the poet Geoffrey, and her husband
William de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk. The Foundation
consisted of a school, still functioning as the local
parish school (unlike the slightly younger Eton
College, founded by William’s friend, King Henry
VI), a cloistered group of almshouses (still
occupied by ‘almsmen’), and the parish church
with its family chantry and Alice’s magnificent
tomb. Duke William was also Lord Protector of
                          nearby Oxford University, which received
bequests from both the Duke and Duchess for the
completion of its new Divinity School, where their
family coats of arms are found in the bosses of its
marvellous vaulted ceiling, along with their
kinsman by marriage, King Edward IV. The story is
not just about shifting regal and aristocratic power
and alliances (Duke William was banished in 1450
and on the way was apprehended and brutally
executed with half a dozen strokes of a rusty
sword), the underlying theological question is
about chantries, good works, and the cost of
passage through Purgatory to salvation. How
many Masses, how much prayer by the living and
what good works would be a sufficient ‘tariff’ to
shorten the purgation of the dead?

The afternoon will begin with your being picked
up from Oxford Station and taken to Ewelme to
see the Foundation of God’s House, School,
almshouses and chantry, then to the
contemporary almshouses at St Helen’s Church in
Abingdon and on via St Mary’s Church, Iffley to
see Alice’s son John’s coat of arms in stained

                          SALVAGED MARINE
                          ROPE BASKET
                          KIM FAGERLAND
My foray into making baskets was accidental - I
pick up rope and plastic off the beaches on
Hornby Island, British Columbia. Every year over 9
million metric tons of plastic washes up on
beaches, most of it connected to the fishing and
                          aquaculture industries.

Rope and plastic in the ocean is a threat to
marine wildlife. Instead of throwing it into the
landfill, it could be upcycled to create something.
The rope is washed, stripped into pieces, stretched
and then stitched together. A twisted piece of
marine waste is transformed into a beautiful
                          basket.

My work represents my concern about the
profusion of plastic in our world, a way of sharing
my love for the ocean and our need to care for
the environment. I am hoping to inspire people to
the possibility of renewal and to look after the
                          ocean.

J.Y.GAO Jewelry is a Canadian brand founded by
Emily Gao in 2016. She studied business in university
and self-taught jewelry design when she started
working because she couldn’t find a brand that
made statement earrings that were light and
comfortable to wear throughout a 9 to 5 job. She
perceives the body as a moving landscape. Each
piece she designs considers how the kinetic
energy the body produces can be used to create
movement in her jewelry. As you move, the jewelry
moves with you to display different shapes and

Your gift box of Laduree will be customised to what’s
fresh and fabulous when you win this delicious
prize! To whet your appetite, we revisit one of our
Laduree favourites. Everybody knows the fabled
French macaron, but the wonderful French
patisserie made us fall in love all over again not so
long ago. Referencing the generosity and
warmth he received in Canada, Ladurée CEO
David Holder last year dedicated the Christmas
                          collection to Canada! Laduree
partnered with acclaimed Quebecois pastry chef
Patrice Demers to create a mouth-watering
collection echoing all the most iconic flavours of
Quebec. It was a wonderful homage to Canada,
and, whilst this one may be gone for now, we are
sure your fresh treat will make you fall in love all over
                          again too!

                          SID NEIGUM
Sid Neigum is a conceptual, interdisciplinary
womenswear label, the namesake of a
mathematician by nature and a designer by
                          nurture.

                          Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Toronto-based
designer Sid Neigum is an experimentalist aiming
to develop new silhouettes, shapes, ideas and
feelings through fashion design and other
mediums. The brand’s raison d'être is to challenge
                          convention and question tradition. Neigum
expresses an idiosyncratic vision inspired by avant-
garde club culture, street fashion, music,
                          contemporary sculpture, math and architecture
while maintaining a singularly dark aesthetic.
