ANNUAL PROGRAMME - Draiflessen Collection
Dear visitors,

It is with great pleasure that we present the Draiflessen’s programme for
2020. As in previous years, we’ve once again put together an eclectic and
wide-ranging array of exhibitions, events, and educational offerings.

Beginning in late March, we’ll be presenting “Hope”, the final exhibition in our
trilogy, “Faith, Love, Hope”. Much like the first two exhibitions, “Faith” and
“Love”, “Hope” brings together a very personal selection of twentieth- and
twenty-first-century works of art that invite visitors to question and analyse
the complexity, ambiguities, and possible contradictions of a concept that is
as universal as it is individually and personally charged.
Marcella Hansch, founder of the start-up Pacific Garbage Screening, will be
bringing her own message of hope to Draiflessen. She and her interdisciplinary
team are working on a solution to the problem of plastic waste in the world’s
oceans. In April, she’ll present her vision to us in a Podium talk.

The 2020 presentations in DAS Forum will continue to offer important
glimpses into our archive and the work we are doing there. One such presen-
tation, “Fashion Imagery – The 1920s in C&A Advertisements”, opens in May,
and will feature examples of advertising art from our archive that convey the
spirit and fashion of this fascinating decade.

June will see the opening of “Seascapes”, one of the highlights of our show-
case exhibition programme. A presentation of seventeenth-century paintings,
drawings and prints from our collection, this show focuses on the sea – as a place
longed for, but also as a place where the unbridled forces of nature hold sway.

In the autumn, we’ll turn our attention to a question that is currently being dis-
cussed on multiple levels: can an artist’s work be seen in complete isolation from
the artist’s personality, from the person behind the work? The debate around
ANNUAL PROGRAMME - Draiflessen Collection
Emil Nolde – the myth surrounding his life and his person, and the recent
dissolution and deconstruction of this myth – has been particularly emo-
tional in this regard. For the exhibition “Emil Nolde – A Critical Approach
by Mischa Kuball”, conceptual artist Mischa Kuball will take a look at Nol-
de’s contradictory personality, at the discourse on mechanisms of art pro-
duction and perception, and at the link between art and politics.

There’s a whole lot more to discover at the Draiflessen Collection in 2020, as
you will see. On this note – we are looking forward to an exciting and event-
ful year and to many varied and vibrant exchanges with you!

Yours sincerely,

Corinna Otto, Director

LOVE
Part 2 of the exhibition trilogy Faith, Love, Hope

until 26 Jan. 2020

The second exhibition in the Faith, Love, Hope trilogy takes a look at the
concept of love, portraying love not as ephemeral emotion or passionate
feeling, but as a form of (special) social relationship and commitment, as a
sign of quality in interpersonal relations. The exhibition presents a selection
of modern and contemporary works of art that offer reflection on the po-
tentialities, limits, and contradictions of human connectedness. Proceeding
from their own personal experiences of love as well as their observations of
people around them, the artists in this exhibition portray their struggle for
harmony, their longing for protection, but also their encounters with feel-
ings of suffocation and pain.

A trilingual catalogue (German, English, Dutch) has been published in con-
junction with the exhibition.

                                                                             9

HOPE
Part 3 of the exhibition trilogy Faith, Love, Hope

22 Mar. to 21 June 2020

People have hope, cling to hope, lose hope, regain hope, or hopelessly de-
spair. But what does hope mean? In the final part of our exhibition trilogy
Faith, Love, Hope, the Draiflessen Collection will focus on the concept of
hope as a principle of openness to possibilities that are in actuality not (yet)
available. Works of art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, in-
cluding pieces by Michael Buthe, Duane Michals, and Fritz Winter, will
highlight ambiguities and possible contradictions: is hope the confidence
that “everything will go well”, or is it something closer to blind delusion? Is
it invigorating and motivating, or might it not actually be paralysing? The
works in this show will demonstrate that the process of hoping involves a
shifting of the boundaries of knowledge, experience, and consciousness,
that these boundaries can be transcended or completely dissolved. Via the
medium of art, hope thus becomes an object of contemplation, self-inqui-
ry, and discussion.

A richly illustrated, trilingual catalogue (German, English, Dutch) will be
published in conjunction with the exhibition.

                                                                              11

EMIL NOLDE – A CRITICAL APPROACH BY MISCHA KUBALL

11 Oct. 2020 to 7 Feb. 2021

The way the Expressionist painter Emil Nolde (1867–1956) is perceived is
shaped by past myth-creation and the present-day deconstruction of these
myths, making Nolde a good example of just how era-dependent the ap-
praisal of art is. In his installations, conceptual artist Mischa Kuball (b. 1959)
shatters rigid interpretive models and lays bare the many-layered overlap-
ping structures of the production and perception of art. Kuball’s scrutiny of
Nolde as historical and highly contradictory figure opens up discursive spaces
that go beyond the individual example of Nolde and promises a thrilling ex-
amination of the mechanisms artists use to shape their public personas and
of the relationship between art and politics.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a trilingual publication (German,
English, Dutch).

                                                                                13

ON THE ESSENCE OF LANDSCAPE

until 16 Feb. 2020

How do you capture the soul of a landscape? This showcase exhibition pres-
ents two artists determined to find an answer: Rembrandt Harmensz. van
Rijn, who sought to capture the atmosphere, the uniqueness, of a particular
stretch of land, and Frisian artist Jan van der Kooi (b. 1957), who uses tradi-
tional working methods and drawing techniques to get at the inner being,
the intrinsic power, of people, animals, and landscapes.
Van der Kooi’s more than 150 sketchbooks are on view for the first time in
this exhibition and are shown alongside a selection of Rembrandt’s land-
scape etchings.

The exhibition is accompanied by a trilingual publication (German, En-
glish, Dutch).

                                                                             17

ON THE THIRD DAY ...

4 Mar. to 1 June 2020

Resurrection scenes – rendered in vivid colour, some with gold highlights
– from books of hours and prayer books from a German private collection
will be on display for this showcase exhibition. The medieval/early mod-
ern conception of the resurrection of Christ and of the dead must be seen in
conjunction with hope for the Kingdom of Heaven and fear of damnation,
with both being dictated by one’s own life and its pleasingness to God. This
conception finds reflection in thirteen manuscript pages, most of them from
German-Dutch speaking regions and dating from the 1430s to the 1540s.

                                                                          19

SEASCAPES

18 June to 18 Oct. 2020

The bellicose rivalry between the leading maritime powers of England,
Spain, and the Netherlands for supremacy in overseas trade was accompa-
nied in the seventeenth century by the emergence of an independent genre
of art: the seascape. The genre covers a broad spectrum of subjects, ranging
from faithfully rendered ship portraits, dramatic naval battles and fleet re-
views to everyday waterscapes and coastal scenes populated with anony-
mous boats to vistas that evoke the lure of the sea. Combining paintings,
drawings, and prints from the Draiflessen’s collection, the “Seascapes”
showcase exhibition will explore this fascination.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a trilingual publication (German,
English, Dutch).

                                                                           21

PLAY OF LIGHT

4 Nov. 2020 to 28 Feb. 2021

The focus of this showcase exhibition is on the play of light and the intense
luminosity of stained-glass painting – an art form that flourished during
the late Gothic and Renaissance periods, especially in Germany, Switzer-
land, and the Netherlands. It marks the first ever presentation of the Liberna
Collection’s Kabinettscheiben (Kabinett = small room; Scheiben = glass
panes), often the central panes of leaded windows, from the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries. While stained-glass windows, which often measure
several metres in height, were and still are an integral feature of the public
church space, the round, rectangular, or quatrefoil-shaped Kabinettschei-
ben were more likely to be found ornamenting secular, private spaces. Pre-
ferred subjects were moralising allegories or religious themes. Yet it is the
translucent material and the way its appearance constantly changes with
the light that continues to fascinate to this day and breathes life into the fig-
ures and stories depicted.

                                                                              23

SOCIAL COMMITMENT AND TRADITION

until 16 Feb. 2020

This exhibition, on display in DAS Forum, focuses on the background and
development of the Brenninkmeijer business family’s charitable activities
and seeks to situate this work in its historical context.
Leo Brenninkmeijer, grandson of one of the founders of C&A, was still a
teenager when he first expressed his desire to become a priest. In 1900,
he joined the Hiltrup missionaries. Photographs and letters document his
work in Papua New Guinea and the support provided by the Brenninkmei-
jer family and C&A.

                                                                      27

PERSONAL FAVOURITES

4 Mar. to 3 May 2020

The Draiflessen’s storage facilities contain a vast number of items from the
Draiflessen’s collection and archive – items that tell a particular story, fill
in gaps, or represent an important discovery. For each instalment of “Per-
sonal Favourites”, a series of intermittent presentations, selected treasures
will be retrieved from storage, put on display, and their histories explained.
This year, three colleagues from the Draiflessen’s archive and collection de-
partments will present their favourite pieces: original drawings and cam-
era-ready artwork from the estate of graphic artist and illustrator Johannes
Maria Schneider.

                                                                            29

FASHION IMAGERY – THE 1920s IN C&A ADVERTISEMENTS

13 May to 25 Oct. 2020

The fashion and spirit of the 1920s still fascinate, inspire, and capture imagi-
nations today. As forms of mass media, magazines and newspapers dissemi-
nated the newest trends in countless articles and advertisements. C&A used
the latter to promote the latest in women’s, men’s, and children’s fashion.
More than 2,500 adverts from this decade alone are preserved in the Drai-
flessen Collection. They form the core of this presentation and chronicle
the diverse range of changing styles – the drop waists, elaborate embroider-
ies, sailor collars, lounge suits, and other trends. In addition, the advertise-
ments afford insights into the production and supply of C&A clothing – and,
with their allusions to the political, economic, and social developments of
the time, offer a look at the 1920s that extends beyond the realm fashion.

                                                                              31

DAS MEER RUFT (THE SEA CALLS)
On the Unpredictability of Business Success

11 Nov. 2020 to 28 Feb. 2021

At first glance, the clothing trade and the film business do not seem to
have much in common. In the 1920s, however, both sectors enjoyed an
enormous upswing – and businessman Bernhard Joseph Brenninkmeijer,
co-owner of C&A, spotted an investment opportunity: in 1932 he found-
ed Eidophon, a film production company, and signed one of the most well-
known actors of the Weimar period, Heinrich George. George would go on
to appear in Eidophon’s feature film “Das Meer ruft”. The objects and doc-
uments on display in this DAS Forum presentation – most of them from
the Draiflessen Collection – paint a picture of an entrepreneur whose sound
business acumen contributed to the lasting success of C&A, but whose at-
tempt to build the Eidophon film company ultimately ended in failure.

                                                                        33

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN AND THE PRINCIPLE OF HOPE

17–19 Mar. 2020

“Hope sustains me, as it does half the world; through life she has been my
close companion, or what would have become of me?” With this quota-
tion from Ludwig van Beethoven, we circle back to our exhibition “Hope”.
In 2020, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth will be celebrated, both
in Germany and internationally, and Bonn, the city of the composer’s birth,
is taking on a central role. Participants in this excursion will visit the Beetho-
ven-Haus in Bonn, discover the city during a guided tour, see the exhibitions
“Beethoven. World.Citizen.Music” at the Bundeskunsthalle and “Salvador
Dalí and Hans Arp: The Birth of Memory” at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Ro-
landseck, and – last but not least – attend the concert “Two ‘Even-numbered’
Symphonies”, featuring works by Beethoven, at the Oper Bonn.

Excursion to Hagen and Essen
JUGENDSTIL LIVE

9 May 2020

The Museum Folkwang is a cultural highlight of the city of Essen. The idea
for the museum goes back to Karl Ernst Osthaus. After deciding against a
future in the family business, Osthaus studied art history – and in 1902,
he used his inheritance to found the Museum Folkwang in his home town
of Hagen, at the time a thriving industrial city. Following Osthaus’s early
death, the museum’s collection was sold to Essen, in 1922, and a museum
with the same name, Folkwang – a name borrowed from Norse mythology –
was established: in the Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems, Fólkvangr
(people’s meadow) is a term used to describe the abode of the goddess Freya.
Our day-long excursion ends with a tour of Osthaus’s Jugendstil villa, the
Hohenhof, completed in 1908 and built by the renowned Belgian interior
designer and architect Henry van de Velde.

THE EXTREMES OF SEAFARING

29 Aug. 2020

With “Seascapes”, the showcase exhibition that will be on display during
summer 2020, Draiflessen Collection will take visitors back in time to the
sometimes belligerent, sometimes romantic, but always fascinating world
of seventeenth-century seafaring. Reason enough to take a more in-depth
look at the subject of sea travel and navigation! The shipwreck and fishery
museum Windstärke 10 (Wind Force 10), which opened at the end of 2013
in Cuxhaven’s historic fish-packing halls, explores the extremes of seafaring,
enables visitors to experience the perils of the sea, tells stories of shipwreck
and the struggle to survive, and describes the hard work on board ships and
the risks for boat and crew.
After lunch at Unikat, located directly opposite the museum in Cuxhav-
en’s harbour district, the group will take a guided walk across the mudflats
and explore the Wadden Sea in Lower Saxony, a UNESCO Natural World
Heritage site.

Excursion to Seebüll
HOME AND INSPIRATION

22–24 Oct. 2020

In conjunction with the exhibition “Emil Nolde – A Critical Approach by
Mischa Kuball”, this excursion will take participants to the far north of
Schleswig-Holstein to discover the beauty of the landscape that inspired
Expressionist painter Emil Nolde.
In 1927, Emil Nolde and his wife, Ada, began building their home in See-
büll in the small municipality of Neukirchen not far from the Danish border.
The couple’s home and its very special setting can be visited and the works
of art Nolde created in Seebüll can still be seen there today. The excursion
will also include a visit to a second Expressionist-style artist’s residence: the
Kunststätte Bossard, the home of artist couple Johann Michael Bossard and
Jutta Bossard-Krull. And, finally, the group will make a stop at Schloss Got-
torf to see the castle’s magnificent rooms and works of art.

Festival of Faith
I’M HERE! BUT WHERE MIGHT THAT BE?

28 May 2020 | 7:00 p.m.

We are living in a time in which many are diagnosing the absence of God and
are doing so more and more as a matter of course – and it would seem that
for the most part this causes no further pain of loss. So, is there still such a
thing as hope for greater individual commitment in matters of faith and for
vibrant church communities?
This discussion, to be held as part of the festival of faith “I’m Here!”, organ-
ised by the St Agatha parish in Mettingen, will consider these questions,
bringing together pastoral theological scholarship, modern approaches to
evangelisation, and concrete pastoral practice.

DAS kleine ICH BIN ICH (Little I-AM-ME)
A Musical Fairy Tale (not just) for Children

16 Feb. 2020 | 11:30 a.m. | meet MUSIC: Foyer Concert

Mira Lobe’s book “DAS kleine ICH BIN ICH” (Little I-Am-Me), about the
little unnamed animal who goes in search of its identity, is a classic of chil-
dren’s literature. In this musical fairy tale of the same name, younger and
older listeners alike can embark on a journey into the fantastic world of cello
sounds and music-text associations. The expressive possibilities of music
make for a playful, sensory experience, with the animals portrayed so accu-
rately through sounds and melodies that listeners think they can hear them.

Opera and concert singer Kirsten Borchard will present the programme and
recite the part of the main character. The 25-year-old composer of the piece,
André Buttler, will accompany on piano. Completed in 2019, the work
was commissioned for CellOro, a new cello ensemble comprising Kirsten
Borchard and twelve cellists.

from the composer’s works. With Rainer Böhm on piano and Patrice Héral
on drums, the trio manages to dissolve boundaries between musical eras and
genres and to create what is, quite simply, pure music: chamber jazz, intimate
and extrovert at the same time, amazingly dynamic.
Playing off one another with uncanny ease, the musicians create magnificent
moments of magic, making the trio one of the most intense and organic live
formations of its kind.

                THREE WORKS, ONE HOUR
Contemplate and discuss in the exhibition Hope.
A quick look at a work of art leads to a quick judge-
ment: beautiful, ugly, boring, exciting. A longer look
means a longer time to arrive at an opinion – time in
which details and moods can be discovered that are
not visible with just a brief glance. Discussing obser-
vations with others broadens one’s perspectives –
both inside and outside the exhibition.
