President’s report What a great year we have had at our club. We have seen growth throughout the club with strong numbers, dedicated coaches, managers and a willing parent supporter base. In 2013, there have been many highlights: Our club’s website was established where members could access information about games, photos, coaches’ updates, fixtures and sponsors. Ruby Edmeades was invited to Metricon Stadium as a part of the Women in AFL celebrations. A number of our female members attended a luncheon held by the league where they were entertained by Liz Ellis, a past Australian netballer. The Under 8s and some Under 10s played at Metricon Stadium during half time between Gold Coast Suns and the Blues as part of the AFLQ grid games. This year saw our first major fundraiser for the club held at the Beach Cafe. Auctions, raffles and a delicious meal were enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Riley Buckland, Milo Bisogni and Fergus Biggin-Johnston who were selected in the North Coast/Polding AFL teams for primary school. The three boys represented our area with pride and they are a credit to our club and their coaches. Also to Luca Bisogni who was an official referee at the same carnival. Lucas skills were highly sought after as he also went on to referee and boundary umpire for both the Primary and High Schools’ National Carnival in Darwin. To all of the Coaches, Managers and support staff, I commend you on your professionalism, your dedication and the way you have led our players from the front. The skills that you have instilled in our players have really elevated their roles on and off the field. I thank you for your efforts. To the 2013 sponsor contributions, I personally appreciate your donations to the club. It has helped provide new extra equipment, players’ shorts and socks. Plus your sponsorship helped subsidise players representing our club at a higher level. Our club benefits from your sponsorship and we hope you continue in 2014. One of our other major fundraisers was the Canteen. I cannot remember everyone’s name that helped prepare, cook and serve but you are the
CONT… backbone of this club. The conversations we all had were a reflection of the close-knit culture we are starting to grow. What is said in the canteen stays in the canteen! A big thankyou to all. Finally to my hard-working and dedicated members of the committee. Everyone has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to provide the best possible AFL experience for your children. From the early setup of the canteen to the late meetings, the committee has always had the players’ best interests in mind. The committee has developed a clear direction for the up and coming years and for their commitment and volunteering many extra hours to this club, I thank them sincerely. Thank you for supporting the Byron Bay Magpies for the season of 2013. I hope you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have and I hope to see you all back in 2014. Barry Spry President 2013
CLUB ACHIEVEMENTS The Byron Bay Magpies Committee would like to congratulate all of our teams on a successful year. Each of the players have shown personal commitment to improve their skills and sportsmanship across the season with excellent results, which is shown by both the under 12 and 14 teams making it into the finals. End of year ladders (Under 9 and 10 teams do not record scores for a league ladder) U14s 2013 Ladder after Round 16 U12s 2013 Ladder after Round 16
CLUB ACHIEVEMENTS CONT… During the season, the club has been represented in many articles in the local press, which have highlighted some of the individual player achievements outside of the club. The creation of the club website was a milestone and a good source of information for parents and players about the club, fixtures and access to resources.
Under 8s – The next generation! Coaching Team – Stuart Amos, Andy Goodlet & Luca Bisogni Coaching Team message: This has been an exciting your for the club as it was our first season holding our own club-based AUSKICK program. Luca Bisogni was assisted by Julian Van den Driest from AFLQ, taking the kids for the program and providing them the basic skills before they went on to form the Super 8 team. Both Stuart Amos & Andy Goodlet shared the training of the Super 8 and it was a strong team every week that turned up for training and attending the League events. Super 8’s training teaches them more about the rules of the games and provides more ball training and working as a team by having them play internal club games between each other. The League for the first time introduced Gala Days, which were shared around between other clubs. The kids enjoy wearing the different AFL colour guernseys at each game and it is a fight to grab their favourite team colour. The highlight for our Super 8s this year was attending Metricon Stadium to play during half time during the Gold Coast Suns & Carlton game in July. It has been a pleasure working these keen young players as they will be the next generation of the club and we look forward to seeing them back next year.
Under 9s Coach – Adrian Kennedy Manager – Andy Goodlet Coach’s message: It is a great privilege to transition young footballers from Auskick to the club environment. It is a testimony to the quality of the more experienced players in the under-9s who so openly supported the younger players in this transition process. What stood out above all other things this year for the under-9s was their growth as a team. The benefits of working for each other were evident week in, week out. The anecdotal evidence of their building camaraderie could be seen as much after the game than during it. Whether it was a posse loitering around the scoreboard concocting elaborate schemes to obtain free lollies from the canteen or a simple game of kick to kick, the team have developed what I hope will be lifelong friendships. What impresses me most about these boys is their decency and integrity. On a number of occasions they demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship to willingly switch teams to even up games or warmly welcome players from other sides when they joined our team. They are also developing respect for the important role that our
Under 9s…cont umpires play in our great game. A special thankyou to Andy Goodlet for his support as manager throughout the year and for coaching in my absence. The boys had noticeably improved under his guidance! Thank you to all parents who support our club with your time, effort and energy at training and on game days. The basis of all sport is fun. I thank you for your positive example in this regard. It is a pleasure to see your kids’ increasing enjoyment of the game and passion for the black and white! It is my hope that you and your children continue to share in that experience and be a part of our great club in 2014. Best and Fairest – Will Amos Last year’s most improved to this year’s best and fairest. Will’s determination and willingness to put his body on the line for his team to win the ball always lifts the team. A deserved winner. Well done, Will. Best and Fairest Runner Up – Peter Wise A fantastic effort in his first year of football. Peter is a natural ball winner and athlete with a big future in the game. Well done, Peter. Coach’s Award - Gabriel Shine Gabe has developed into one of the most exciting football prospects in the northern rivers. His preparedness to listen and exemplary sportsmanship make him a deserved winner of the coach’s award. Most Improved – Archer Goodlet Archer has developed into a fine player. His ability to win the football and use it effectively escalated to a new level this year. Well done, Archer!
Under 10s Coach – Sree Raju Manager – Jason Crethar Coach’s message: What an outstanding season of footy for the mighty U10s. It has been a great privilege to be their coach. The team had gone through the season undefeated (not that we keep score!). What impressed me most about the team was the considerate nature of their game. Most games every single player kicked at least one goal. Congratulations to all the boys on their outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork and great attitude. For some of the boys, this was the third season of playing together; however, almost half of the team was made up of new recruits. It was great to witness the team improve and develop throughout the season. The boys worked hard at training, which was then evident in their game. The skills displayed on game day were, at times, exceptional. It was great to see the boys work together to play some truly fabulous footy. Thank you to all the parents for all you have done throughout the season. In particular the invaluable help at training and game day from Jack, Rob and Dave. Last but not least a big thankyou to Jason, our Team Manager for keeping it all together. Hope to see you all next year. GO THE PIES!!
Under 10s…cont Best and Fairest – Milo Bisogni An outstanding footy player with loads of talent and potential. Milo makes the impossible possible when he has the ball in his hands. Great attacking player. Congratulations, Milo, very well deserved. Look out for this boy in the future, mid field for the Crows. Best and Fairest Runner Up – Marlin Corbett As we all know… Marlin is a fantastic footy player, with a great overhead mark. Marlin is more than capable of playing awesome footy in any position. A player with an exceptional talent for kicking goals. Well done, Marlin! What a fantastic season for you. Coach’s Award – Harrison Kirkwood Harrison is an attentive listener who always works hard. He is a valuable and caring member of the team. Pleasure to coach. Well done on a great year, Harrison. Most Improved – Luke Helmore Luke well and truly deserves the most improved. Luke was new to footy this year and his improvement throughout the season has been excellent. A great effort, Luke.
Under 12s Coach – Todd Buckland Assistant Coach – Bruce Johnson Manager – Barry Spry Runner – Peter Barton First Aid – Katie Biggins Coach’s message: We began with a lot more boys than we could fit into one squad and not enough for two. We ended up with 24 boys all keen to play footy. A fairly even split of 11 and 12 year olds who all had something to contribute to a very successful year where we ended up undefeated minor premiers in the regular season. There was always courage, sportsmanship and our games were always played in the spirit of the game no matter what was thrown at us. There were a bunch of great games and awesome individual performances. It’s impossible to recount all the memorable moments in the season but two games stick out in my mind. Round 14 vs. Tweed Tigers at home. Despite playing our hearts out, we were down at half time; the boys came out in the third quarter and took the game away from the Tweed and it was then that we as coaches and you boys as a team found out what you were capable of. We won the game and we deserved to. No matter what would follow, the last round was always going to be one of the highest of highs this season. We told our boys what we wanted; you did exactly what was asked of you and so much more. You played as a team and for each other and we couldn’t have
Under 12s...cont been prouder. It seems that at times you WERE listening and you DID learn and Bruce, Pete and I feel like we’ve all achieved a lot this season. What a great year. Big thanks to all the boys and please keep playing footy. There’s so much you’ll get out of it. Best and Fairest – Fergus Biggin-Johnston A dynamic key position player spending almost all his time at centre half forward this year. Competitive, skilful and aggressive when required. Sensational overhead mark, copybook kick and handball to match. Naturally talented, reads the game and a champion who any team or coach would be fortunate to have. Utterly committed to each game and the game itself. A great leader. Not surprisingly he represented the north coast at the NSW PSSA carnival in 2013. 2nd year running for B&F award. Many good things to come. Best and Fairest Runner Up – Riley Buckland Extremely athletic and tenacious with the best motor in the team, perfect for an on-baller. Played the year as rover. Uses his speed brilliantly in defence and attack. Plays above his weight with plenty of heart. A true ball winner with his ferocious tackling and anticipation being major factors. Known to please the crowd with a well-timed bump or a blistering run with the ball. Kicked the winning goal in the grand final this year. Represented Polding at state 2013 and 2014. Runner-up B&F four years straight. Watch this space. Coach’s Award – Charlie Goodlet He's what every team needs. Completely dependable and unwavering in his resolve to play his hardest every game. Played centre all year and for very good reason. Can mark, can kick, can tackle, can shepherd, can handball and can run all day. Great kid and a pleasure to have in the team. Most Improved – Cooper Tygh First year player from league. Small in stature with a huge ticker. Tackles like a demon and very evasive with the ball in hand. Kicking, hand balling and his reading of the game have improved out of sight. Hope he continues to play. Next year will be a huge one for him.
Under 12s...cont Leading Goal Kicker – Fergus Biggin-Johnston I've said a lot about this boy already but there's more. Can kick goals from both feet and finds himself in goal scoring positions time after time. A brilliant radar and accurate kick. Banana from deep in the pocket in the grand final was a cracker. 2013 Grand Final Team
Under 14s Coach – Tim Peacock Assistant Coach – Nathan Pollock Manager – Ben Blay Runner – Duncan Sproul First Aid – Michael Spiteri Coach’s message: Well it’s hard to believe that season 2013 has nearly come and gone. As I write this, the 2013 Under 14 magpies are facing a stern challenge against the Tweed Tigers this Sunday to fight our way into the grand final and the right to play Ballina in the grand final game. Nathan Pollock (Asst Coach), Ben Blay (Team Manager) and I took on the stewardships of our team of 24 and as always I am very grateful to these guys for their commitment to the team as well as their help and advice at training and at matches. Our team, as is the way in the Northern Rivers, comprises a small band of diehard AFL-loving kids, some great athletes and surfers who love to be with their mates and play sport. We also have one of the only female juniors in the league in Ruby Edmeades, whose quiet enthusiasm and contribution to the team is enormous. It’s a great mix and makes this a unique part of the world for junior AFL. Our captains were Tom Weir, Eli Nicholson and Luca Bisogni and they took on this role and grew into it with great maturity as the season wore on. Personally I have really enjoyed getting to know the players in the upper half
Under 14s...cont of our age group. After many years this group has finally been able to take on team leadership and the younger boys and Ruby have benefited greatly from their experience. On the field we have had a lot of success, winning all but two of our twelve regular season games. We had something of a stop start season with regular byes, and rain-affected rounds, but there is no doubt that as a team we have improved. We won many games comfortably and had regular challenges against the Ballina Bombers that tested our skills, resilience and teamwork. A huge highlight of the season for our club and the team was the achievement of Luca in being selected for the National Primary School AFL championship as umpire. Luca’s love of AFL, dedication to playing and umpiring, hard work, maturity and footy nous make this achievement not at all surprising. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that if Luca wanted to pursue umpiring in the future he would be able to take it to the highest level. Our parents are to be thanked for their dedication in getting our players to training and matches regularly. Consistency in attendance makes for great team spirit and confidence, and also makes the job of coaching that much easier. Thanks also to the parents who helped with oranges, goal umpiring and the odd bit of running when Nathan was unable to make it. Also I want to thank Don Carlson and Garth Nicholson for their regular insightful contributions and participation at training, and Matt ‘Corbo’ Corbett for his ongoing interest and encouragement. The season couldn’t run at all without our committee. Thank you to Barry, Stuart, Adrian, Damian, Don, Janice and Michelle for your hard work and support. It’s been another awesome season of AFL with lots of stories to tell. I hope our young men and women will look back in years to come and remember being part of a team in which they had fun, learnt something, made new friends and strengthened existing friendships and worked through the ups, downs and challenges toward a communal goal, because that’s what a season of AFL should provide. Go Maggies! Tim Peacock
Under 14s...cont 2013 Grand Final Team Best and Fairest – Angus Callan Angus had a fabulous season where he played a number of roles but primarily that of our back line general at centre half back. He loves to run and this quality provided a great platform for many of our attacks from the back line. Angus’s line breaking and outstanding skills, along with his leadership through example, made for an outstanding season. When you reflect on our season Angus’s contribution to our success was invaluable and he thoroughly deserves this award. Best and Fairest Runner Up – Tom Weir Tom’s season was outstanding. He was chosen by me, Nathan and Ben as one of our co-captains and fulfilled his leadership role through example on the field, and at training, brilliantly. Tom has a very high work rate, an ability to run and a high skill level and this rubbed off on the players. Tom’s value to the team week in, week out was immeasurable and just his sheer presence on the field was enough to give confidence to his teammates and coaches.
Under 14s...cont Coach’s Award – Cooper Motley Cooper also took a while to establish his spot in the team this season. Ultimately he played a vital role as full back/ second ruck. We felt Cooper embodied the criteria for this award with his diligent pursuit of self-improvement, willingness and keenness to learn and to take on any role asked of him. To say Coops never complains about any role you ask him to fulfil would be underselling him; he relishes the challenge! Coops has a great attitude at training and he has developed over the last two years into a reliable, skilful, strongbodied defender and the type of player every team needs. Keep it up, Coops! Most Improved – Noah Amos-Eakin Noah has had a very impressive season. He came in as one of our big improvers from under 12s. Early on it was a challenge finding where Noah fitted into the new team structure and he played many roles before firming as half back flank in the last few games. It was here where it became obvious just how far Noah has come, as we witnessed his natural ability to attack the footy, gain the confidence to leave his opposition player and run it through the lines to the forwards. Great season, Noah! Leading Goal Kicker – Will Carlson Will arrived as a Melbourne recruit and sadly for him an Essendon supporter! It was obvious from the first training that Will could play footy and understood the game. He is a natural, tall, strongmarking and straight kicking full forward. It was no surprise that Will kicked a bagful of goals on a number of occasions and took out this award. It will be great to see Will develop further next year.
SHAUN REHN MEDALS The Shaun Rehn medal acknowledges the significant contribution Shaun has made to this great game of AFL being a ruckman for Hawthorn and Adelaide winning AFL premiership grand final teams. Shaun is currently the Assistant Coach for Port Power and through his achievements we acknowledge the contribution of individual players who have played outstanding games in finals series for their teams. All players are chosen via a selection panel based on their performance in all finals games for the year. Under 12s CONGRATULATIONS Rhys Stewart An experienced player saving our bacon time after time late in the season. This boy rotated in the ruck all year until the last three games when he was a revelation at full back. Played his heart out in the finals using his superior marking and big kick to great advantage. Anticipated where the ball would be, left his man at exactly the right times to get it. Often outnumbered but never outclassed. He made excellent decisions with the ball in hand allowing us to bounce out of defence into attack countless times. Under 14s CONGRATULATIONS Lincoln Pupangamirri Throughout our three finals matches this season Lincoln showed why he is so important to this team. His ability to find the ball, gather and run with it on his finger tips and despatch it is as brilliant as I have seen anywhere in the AFL world. He is also a leader, and when the chips are down and Lincoln fires up, the team get excited and lift, and so does our crowd of parent supporters!! Well done on a brilliant finals series, Lincoln.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP Bob Lodge BBJAFC Club President 2007 & 2008 AFLGCJ Board Member 2008 & 2009 AFLNRJ Board Member 2012 & 2013 Bob has had a long history with Junior AFL in Northern NSW and the Gold Coast for a number of years. His passion and foresight has not only seen our own club grow following Ean Jones, but also across the Northern Rivers Junior League. The Byron Bay Magpies wouldn’t have a strong base in Bangalow without the hard work and effort that Bob put into the club and for this, the BBJAFL committee wish to acknowledge his contribution by awarding Life Membership of the club and look forward to ongoing commitment to the junior code. Ean Jones BBJAFC Club President 2005 & 2006 Nth Rivers Storm Coach 2006 & 2007 AFLNRJ Board Member 2012 & 2013 Ean was one of the clubs earlier Presidents and had a large involvement in coaching the Under 16 team which lead onto combining and becoming what we now know as the Nothern Rivers Storm team. As coach of the Storm, Ean lead the team to a Grand Final victory. Along with Bob Lodge, Ean has continued his long association with Junior AFL development in the Northern Rivers and currently is on the AFLNRJ Board.
CLUBPERSON PROFILE The clubperson award is awarded to the person who embodies an unwavering commitment to the betterment of the football and it’s community. 2013 NOMINEES Ruby Edmedeas – Under 14 player Sree Raju – Under 10 Coach Stuart Amos – Committee Member Luca Bisogni – Under 14 player & Auskick Asst. 2013 Winner – Stuart Amos Club Achievem ents: Despite the exceptional list of nominees, Stuart Amos was the committee’s unanimous choice to receive this award in 2013. As club secretary, Stuart is a great communicator and his consultative approach on issues is greatly appreciated. He was heavily involved in sponsorship and fundraising. The club achieved record sponsorship in 2013, which enabled us to invest in equipment, player support and cultural development. These elements are the cornerstone of our community's AFL experience. His commitment to the cultural development of the club was evident at the club function held at Byron Beach Cafe, the Women In AFL Lunch, the recognition of Ruby Edmeades’s contribution to our club, the support for Luca Bisogni's representative pursuits, the grand final after match and today’s presentation day, which Stuart has organised and executed flawlessly. Stuart is also a significant contributor to building our club’s relationship with the league and AFLQ. This involves looking after the primary interests of the club and balancing them with the strategic intent of the league. In a developing code, this requires significant commitment. Stuart has made an incredible contribution to supporting the volunteers of the club. Firstly, Stuart has built the club’s own website, which will facilitate online registrations in 2014. He has also provided significant support for one of the club’s primary revenue sources, the canteen. Finally, Stuart has an unwavering commitment to our children's participation. Stuart was primarily responsible for reorganising the fixture to ensure that our junior teams functioned this year. In the absence of Stuart’s work in this area, the under 9s would have played five of the 16 games they eventually played. The under 10s would also have played less games. Stuart was also a key driver behind the Super 8s (the future of our club) and advocating for the future pathway of a local under 16s competition which the league is committed to reviewing for 2015. On behalf of the club, I would like to congratulate Stuart and thank him for his highly effective contribution to our footballing community. BBJAFL Committee
