Preface Svenja Schulze Minister of Innovation, Science and Research of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia North Rhine-Westphalia is a future-oriented location with high potential. As a key technology, biotechnology has the capacity to play a key role in this. It is a fast-developing sector, crucial to sustainable innovation, growth and employment. In recent years, North Rhine-Westphalia has evolved as one of Europe’s life-science hubs and major centres of biotechnology. It is our goal to further strengthen these strengths: We are putting extra emphasis on creating the best possible framework for research and development, on better co-operation between academia and industry and on internationalization for tapping the full potential. 6
We are proud that numerous internationally successful biotech firms have chosen to settle here. Thanks to excellent research, cutting-edge biotech companies, powerful pharmaceutical and chemical industries plus an encouraging climate for entrepreneurs North Rhine-Westphalia has become a hot spot attracting growing international attention. All of them provide top-quality services, products and impressive expertise, and leave their mark on North Rhine- Westphalia’s biotechnology landscape. We look forward to welcoming you at the BIO.NRW booth! Meet innovative companies from North Rhine-Westphalia and contact partners for co-operation! Svenja Schulze 7
Greeting Dr. Bernward Garthoff Chair of Cluster Biotechnology North Rhine-Westphalia Dear Visitors and Exhibitors, In the past few years, biotechnology has proven itself as a cross-disciplinary field that can provide our society with groundbreaking answers to questions in the central areas of health/medicine, nutrition and energy. According to the OECD Biotechnology Statistics 2009, North Rhine- Westphalia has had a great deal of success in the sector, chalking up more biotech patents than any other state in Germany or any other bio-region in Europe. In terms of the overall number of patents, NRW makes the list of the top ten most active sites worldwide. Alongside young start-ups and successful global players, we are pleased to present networks and biotechnology institutes from NRW’s universities and technical colleges at our joint stand this year. The diversity of the exhibitors and the close networking that takes place amongst them well reflects the densely-woven net in biotechnological infrastructure in our state. Last year we introduced our company database featuring 300 NRW Biotech and Life Science enterprises. This year we are presenting a compilation of data focussed on the working groups in NRW’s academic and research 8
institutions. Like the company database, this online database will be updated frequently, and will be launched with 400 detailed profiles. We are convinced that this tool will provide you with valuable and comprehensive access to NRW’s academic expertise. Please join us for a short demonstration on Tuesday, October 5th at 4:15 p.m. in our business lounge at the booth. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to meet your North Rhine-Westphalian business partners and decision-makers at the BIO.NRW Booth Party over cocktails and more. We look forward to seeing you there! Dr. Bernward Garthoff 9

Bartels specializes in innovative applications of micro-systems technology (MST) in the branches of biotechnology, medical technology and mechanical engineering. Microfluidics, microactuation and micromechanics constitute the company‘s technological focus. At this year’s BIOTECHNICA, the company is presenting activities from its two business areas microEngineering and microComponents. The microEngineering division is especially interesting for visitors looking for new technologies and development support in microfluidics. Certainly the most interesting exhibit is the electrowetting demonstrator. Here, fluids are moved by electrical signals for typical processing steps such as transporting, mixing and separation. This technology can revolutionize ‘lab-on-a-chip’ applications. Customers in biotechnology with demands on active fluid handling will be interested in the exhibits of the microComponents business area. The micropump mp6 has a flow performance of 6 ml/minute and can deal with back pressures of up to 550 mbar, offering universal capabilities for liquids and gases. The pump is ingeniously simple, and the 18
