FIRST LEGO League ® ®
FIRST ® LEGO League (FLL®) is a competition catering for upper-primary
and lower-secondary school students. Every year, teams of up to 10
students build, program and compete with a robot, while also learning about
a modern problem in science and engineering and developing solutions for
it. Tournaments are run with the feel of a sporting event, and teams compete
like crazy while having the time of their lives. What FLL teams accomplish is
nothing short of amazing. The skills they learn will last a lifetime. Throughout
their experience, teams will operate under FLL’s signature set of Core Values,
celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.
Each Challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Project and the FLL
Core Values. Teams of up to ten children, with one adult coach, participate
in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a
themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they
have identified (Project), all guided by the FLL Core Values. The culmination
of research, building, programming and sharing their research are FLL
tournaments where teams come together to celebrate their achievements.

experienced success with StoryStarter
In Tasmania, four teachers trialled the LEGO® Education
StoryStarter Curriculum Pack and StoryVisualiser Software in
April, May and June, 2015. The students were in grades 2 and
3 at Hobart Primary schools with a range of students from
both professional and disadvantaged family backgrounds.
All four teachers would agree that the kit is a highly motivating
tool which quickly engages children and promotes thinking,
planning, collaboration, decision making, conversation and the
application of knowledge and skills pertaining to language
and literacy.
The project found that the materials, especially the LEGO
components, are particularly valuable for children learning
English, for children with learning difficulties and delays,
for those who may be gifted in one area, but struggle with
expressive, written language, and for children diagnosed with
an Autism condition.
"The LEGO Education StoryStarter kit is a valuable,
highly motivating tool which quickly engages children to
use their imagination and like a portal, takes them to a
faraway place to become part of their stories. Unlike just
planning a draft story and then publishing it, the LEGOs
allow the children to interact with the characters, become
aware of their feelings and control their conversations. The
children are now making connections with the characters.
The children visualise the setting as the tiny details are
carefully and deliberately placed on the boards. They
determine the complication and control the resolution to
suit the mood spinner.
