Johann Rupert: 5 Steps to Business Success Source: Moneyweb When Johann Rupert makes a rare public appearance, people tend to pay attention. This was certainly the case in December last year when he agreed to an interview on Power FM. In the interview, he candidly shared his thoughts on topics ranging from politics to family life. The real gold, however, can be found in his insight on business and business practices. According to Moneyweb, Rupert proposes a simple yet effective framework that can be used from a small business idea all the way to a very large investment. PLACE So if you’ve started, or are thinking of starting a business, here are Rupert’s five steps towards business success. 1. Identify I the M market A G –ESkeleton HERE The first thing you need to identify is whether or not there is a market for the product or services that you want to offer. Most people do not reflect carefully enough on this crucial point. This does not mean you need to be the only one doing it or the first to do so but determine whether enough people are willing to pay you for your product or service. To put it simply, the product might be great, but if there’s no market, it will fail. 2. Develop a strategy to meet this market need – Bones Once you have confirmed a market for the product or service, you need to develop a business strategy that will service this market. 3. Detailed plan to execute the strategy – Meat You need a team of people with strengths in different areas to execute your strategy. “The plan is on paper, but the game is played on the grass,” said Rupert. Attention to detail is now required in the execution of the strategy by competent executors. For example, executors have a different inherent nature to strategists or the entrepreneurs generating the ideas. Match people to the appropriate jobs according to their strengths. 4. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes The trick here is to identify mistakes and correct them as soon as possible. Learn from your mistakes, but don’t be afraid to make them. 5. Have a level of paranoia You need to be aware of what your competitors are doing. Inaction is death. When complacency sets in, even great business houses have gone into terminal decline. South Africa is overflowing with developing entrepreneurs, all of whom could no doubt benefit from the wisdom of a seasoned business-master. Go forth and prosper.
Solomon’s Strategy For Success By Mike Mazzalongo Solomon lays out 7 easy to understand principles that promote success in any area of one's life here on earth. No series on ancient wisdom, especially wisdom from Jewish kings, would be complete without a contribution from Solomon, son of David. The one thing that everybody knows about Solomon is that he was very wise. When he was anointed king, he asked God to give him the wisdom to govern the people, and God answered his prayer. In I Kings 4:31 we read, "…He was wiser than all men…" This wisdom was exercised in many ways aside from leadership. PLACE Solomon studied botany, built the temple and other great edifices, wrote poetry and made a lot of money. I M surpassed So King Solomon A G E all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. - II Chronicles 9:22 You could sayH EheRhadEthe golden touch because his wisdom gave him the ability to succeed in everything he did. As a that supremely successful individual Solomon was well equipped to give advice to others on how to attain and maintain success. In our time of economic stress and uncertainty I believe it would be profitable for us to review Solomon's strategy for success found in Ecclesiastes 11:1-10. The book of Ecclesiastes is much like a personal diary. In his wisdom, Solomon tried to find out what life was really all about and if it was possible to be truly happy without God. He purposefully experimented with all of life's great attractions: • Sensual and sexual pleasures of every kind • Strong drink and its effect • Creative building projects • Acquiring knowledge in the sciences of his day • The pursuit and exercise of political power While experimenting with these Solomon was careful to record his observations concerning what he felt and learned from his experiences. Near the end of the book there is a chapter describing how to achieve and maintain success throughout one's life. Here, in short form, are Solomon's seven strategies for success: 1. You've Got to Give in Order to Get 1 Cast your bread upon the waters, For you will find it after many days. This is a business principle that all successful people learn right away. There is no return without investment, no reward without risk. This is true if you want to succeed as a business executive as well as a student or a partner in a marriage. There are no opportunities for success in any of these or other ventures without an investment of time, effort, self-discipline and general giving of self. Continue…
People who fail usually have excuses and blame, resentment and anger. Those who succeed, on the other hand, do so because they were willing to give up something of themselves in order to achieve their goals. The old saying is as true today as it was in Solomon's day, "The more you give, the more you get.“ 2. Diversify 2 Give a serving to seven, and also to eight, For you do not know what evil will be on the earth. Successful people understand the reality of the world, that sometimes (more often than not) bad stuff happens. Being prepared for this is wise. It's smart to have a back-up plan, a second window of opportunity. Success doesn't always come with the first career, the second try or the third idea. Sometimes it comes later, after several tries and in an area we never would have imagined. For example, the IBM Company believed that there would only be a market for two or three of their computers back in the 1950s but they continued to develop and expand their products and applications anyways and grew into the international leader it is today. Successful people develop as many of their talents, and pursue as many opportunities as time and energy permit. 3. Don't Worry About What You Can't Change 3 If the clouds are full of rain, They empty themselves upon the earth; And if a tree falls to the south or the north, In the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie. Solomon uses examples from nature to demonstrate situations over which we have no control and cannot change once they take place. The idea is that we don't always succeed at every step. Things happen that we can't control and when they do, we have to roll with the punches. Successful generals choose when and where they will fight. They rarely go into battles that they don't believe they will win. In worst case scenarios they are able to recognize when they can't win and try to cut their losses in order to survive and fight another day. To succeed, we need to invest our energy into viable causes, and not worry about past mistakes or the lack of resources and talent. To succeed, we need to use what we have, where it will do the most good, without regard for those things that are impossible for us to control. 4. Do it Now He who observes the wind will not sow, And he who regards the clouds will not reap. There is never a perfect time to begin. In most instances we simply need to begin or else lose the opportunity at hand. There is always a reason to put off doing something, always a pretty good excuse for not starting something challenging, difficult or life-changing. This is why there are only a few who make it to the Olympics, only a few who have been to the moon, only one Mona Lisa. Successful people act on their dreams, their goals and their vision right away. I remember having a dream and in this dream I had a terrific idea for a lesson and series about a certain Bible topic. The outline was perfectly visible in my dream. I half awoke and asked God to remind me in the morning to write down the material I had thought of. The next morning when I tried to recall the idea and outline I was completely blank! I have spent many hours awake since then writing outlines, ideas and devotional articles that have come to me in the middle of night, not waiting for a more convenient time the next day. The best time to begin succeeding at your dream or goal is now. Putting it off until tomorrow is the lazy person's way of avoiding the burden of success. 5. You Never Know Until You Try 5As you do not know what is the way of the wind, Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, So you do not know the works of God who makes everything. 6 In the morning sow your seed, And in the evening do not withhold your hand; For you do not know which will prosper, Either this or that, Or whether both alike will be good. Continue…
Some things you don't see (the wind and, before x-rays, an unborn child) but they are never-the-less real. Success cannot be obtained or even seen until a person actually tries. Other people may be blind to the possibility of your success because they don't share your vision or lack confidence in you. Many won't support your efforts because they are jealous that your success will reveal their failure or weakness. Solomon tells us to believe the evidence of the unseen, believe the evidence of God and the power of faith. Trying is another way of saying, "I believe," "I see," "I know," when others disbelieve, are blind or refuse to understand. You never know until you try, but if you don't try, you'll never know. 6. Remember God's Judgment 7 Truly the light is sweet, And it is pleasant for the eyes to behold the sun; 8 But if a man lives many years and rejoices in them all, Yet let him remember the days of darkness, For they will be many. All that is coming is vanity. 9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment. Success is marvellous and was meant to be this way by God. He didn't create us to be failures or to be unhappy, but rather to be productive and joyful, to enjoy the things that He gives us while we can. However, the pleasure that comes from success is not the end of life, nor is it the goal of life. In Ecclesiastes 12:13 Solomon says that the goal of life is to know and obey God. Success is a by-product of the life lived to please, know and serve God. The danger lies in making success the goal of life rather than a benefit of a good and obedient life before God. Successful people understand that their success is a gift and they don't become so enthralled by success that they will do anything in order to obtain or keep it. Many who are rich and famous confess that they are often unhappy and dissatisfied because they sold their souls in the chase for success and learned that success, all by itself, was not worth the cost. 7. Success is Sweet But Success is Short 10Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, And put away evil from your flesh, For childhood and youth are vanity. Who won the gold medal for gymnastics ten years ago? Who was the richest man in the world 75 years ago? Someone has said, "If you want to judge the value of something or how much of yourself to put into it, see what meaning it will have 100 years from today." Solomon's advice to the successful is to enjoy their success while they have it, because very soon it will be gone. Good advice for many who work hard to build families, homes, careers, but spend so little time enjoying the fruit of their labour. What good is success and what honour does God receive if we don't take the time to smell the roses while they are in bloom? Summary What is interesting about this passage of Scripture is its worldly tone. Solomon writes about the things we need to know, remember and do in order to succeed in this world, whether one is a child of God or not. The strategy works either way. One thing not mentioned here, however, is that success in this world does not guarantee success in the next world. Jesus told us that there is nothing in this world, no degree of success or wealth, that will guarantee our soul's entry into the heavenly realm. If we study Solomon's life, we find out that despite his great wisdom and incredible success, he failed in the one thing that was needed: obedience to God. His wealth and desire for pleasure led him to marry many foreign wives who eventually influenced him to sin by worshiping pagan gods, the one thing God warned him to avoid. There is nothing wrong with pursuing success using Solomon's strategy to achieve our goals and dreams. After all, God is the one who gave him this wisdom which he passed on to us. But in doing this, let us remember that in order to achieve final success, which is to live forever with God, we must follow His strategy for heavenly success, not earthly success. Continue….
This strategy can be summarized in the following way: • We must believe that Jesus Christ is God and Savior (Acts 8:37) • We must confess our belief in Him (Matthew 10:32) • We must repent of our sins (Acts 2:37-38) • We must be immersed/baptized in water in Jesus' name (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38) • We must remain faithful to Jesus by following His commands and leadership our entire lives (Matthew 10:22) This strategy may not lead to monetary wealth, may not put our names in the history books, but it will put our names into the Book of Life and guarantee our eternal existence with God in heaven. If you have been struggling or discouraged I hope this lesson from King Solomon will help you learn how to better succeed in your family, career, business or character. What I truly hope for everyone, however, regardless of success on this earth is that all succeed in going to heaven with Jesus when He comes.

Importance of CCTV in Business Security is fundamentally important across all walks of life to ensure the overall safety and possessions of all individuals are comprehensively protected. Commercial and residential properties are constructed to provide homeowners and companies with adequate protection against adverse weather conditions. Both buildings are also fit for purpose and provide the flexibility in which to create a stately household and professional business environment. This can be achieved via the integration of interior design features such as furniture and décor, in addition to any portable appliances and machinery to carry out daily tasks. Throughout commercial properties such as office buildings and retail outlets, all companies require careful consideration of integrated security solutions. Although security guards provide an element of protection on the ground floor, their eyes are ears are not extensive enough to provide an over watch of the entire premises. This is where cameras within CCTV security systems play a crucial role within the daily running of a business. Establishing an overview via placements of cameras within key areas within an office environment or retail store is an integral part of CCTV security systems. Although such systems are installed to protect against potential theft or criminal activity, they can play an important role within the productivity levels of employees. While certain individuals may feel their statutory rights are being undermined within a ‘Big Brother’ environment, it is done so to ensure the activities and conduct of all employees is maintained on a daily basis. Cameras can be either situated within the middle of a room or in the corners. Although their placements affects the images and security angle each camera can pick up, the sheer presence of cameras can act as a deterrent to any criminal. Knowing their actions is likely to be detected by one from a multitude of cameras which can clearly depict their face and appearance can decrease the rate of theft and crime. The presence of CCTV as integrated security solutions can also be important for the work ethic and efficiency of employees. As their safety and wellbeing can be placed under threat by an individual who carries out violence or a criminal act, it is vital to integrate adequate protection. In doing so, it can play a fundamental role in catching any perpetrators who steal or damage valuable products or machinery, and put employees at risk. It is crucial to take security seriously in this day and age. It is not just businesses and commercial properties that need good security but it is our homes too. With crime increasing and burglaries very common place, it is very important to consider the available security options and choose one that is the best fit for you. One of the most popular and cost effective ways of providing security in the home and place of work is with cctv cameras and equipment. CCTV cameras can act as a very successful deterrent to thieves and burglars, certainly making them think twice at the very least. The technology behind security equipment these days is incredibly advanced, and it is even possible to hook the cameras up to an ordinary television or computer to watch the footage. Continue…
The following are some of the concerns both home and business have and Top 10 Reasons of Why Install CCTV. Prevent Crime If you're worried about crime, cameras can not only catch criminals in the act, but the very presence of CCTV systems can make a would-be criminal think twice about any wrong-doing. Think about it, if you planned rob or vandalize a store or office, would you want to do it if you knew you were being recorded? Prevent Employee Theft If you suspects one of your employees of wrong-doing but don't know where to begin to try to get to the bottom of things, a camera can be a very helpful tool. This is especially true if you own an establishment where cash is exchanged. Cameras posted near cash registers or other places where employees are often stationed, not only can show you if an employee is stealing, but may even deter an employee from committing a crime if they know you're watching. Be a useful piece of evidence If a crime is committed in or around your business and the person accused of committing the crime was caught on camera, you've got an extra piece of evidence for a court case. Jurors and judges can watch footage or view photos from your security cameras and establish that the person on trial did indeed commit the crime. Not only will you be preventing the same person from causing you more trouble in the future, you'll be helping out your entire community. Help law enforcement solve crime When someone commits a crime and is caught on camera, police and other law enforcement officials can use the footage to release video or photos to the public via various media outlets. Having a picture of the suspect can make a world of difference when it comes to making an arrest and getting dangerous criminal off the street. Keep an eye on children and elderly folks With a CCTV system at home, you can monitor the safety of your children and elderly folks while you are away. Besides, you can keep an eye on your maid and make sure nothing out of the ordinary is going on. Keep an eye on things If you can't be at the office all the time but like to know what's going on, a security camera can help do just that. You can keep an eye on things from your home computer with a few quick clicks of your mouse and make sure your business is running smoothly and nothing out of the ordinary is going on. Protecting your staff CCTV can protect your staff physically against violence from customers. At the same time, it can also protect them against false accusations - perhaps coming from colleagues or even from client and customers. Encourage good behaviour Having a CCTV camera inside offices may help in creating discipline among the employees. For bosses, who want their presence felt so that efficiency at work is optimized, a camera hovering the employees will give the same effect. Monitoring high-risk area Cameras may be placed in high-risk areas inside a factory. Such areas may include those in which fires can possibly break out. A camera in place there will lessen potential damages because emergency measures can be made immediately. Cameras may also be placed in areas where accidents can happen. This is important so that life-saving measures can be employed promptly. Increase customer’s confidence Banks and shops equipped with CCTV cameras give the customers a sense of security and safety. The customers feel secure and this enhances the customers' confidence. Contact us for a free quote for your business for home. Email: stella@libertyempire.co.za Cell: 072 680 5492

PROPERTY TALK By Marc van Heerden How Elections Affect Property Since the beginning of democracy there has been negative growth toward property. Often its aligned to misconceptions, emotional choices and instability of economic and employment issues. These are very natural responses from the consumer. The most recent statistics from Lightstone show that national house prices grew by 3.4% in the year to end- march. PLACE The Western Cape (+5.8%) continues to outperform inflation, while Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and Johannesburg house prices grew by between 2% and 4%. Coastal municipalities are generally performing above this range and IMAGE Port Elizabeth is second in its Capital Growth nationally making it a great investment opportunity. Going forward, household incomes are likely to remain under pressure in the short term - particularly with continued petrol price hikes and with the introduction of a carbon tax in June HERE But with a large percentage of renters and buyers being newcomers to the market, the lower end of the market should continue to hold up well relative to other sectors of the market. Smaller sectional title properties will also perform better as a result (thanks to students, first-time buyers and down-scalers). There is also a significant shortage of accommodation for students and of the right type of retirement developments in different parts of the country. Port Elizabeth had a total transfer value of R4 billion of which R1,2 billion were cash purchases. Approximately 57% of purchasers are First Time Home Owners with the average purchase price being R748 912. Reading the numbers is telling us the following; there are a number of First Time Purchasers and Downscale Purchasers entering the market with the desire of properties under R1 000 000 in value. Developers matching in and around these numbers will be able to reap the fruit of opportunity and clients/investors buying would be able to place tenants with ease and have capital growth. Handy Tips: 1) House prices have always continued on an upward Marc van Heerden curve following elections, but could be tested this time Cell: 073 198 9369 round on national level. marcv@openrealty.co.za 2) Port Elizabeth remains a safe investment.

7 Biblical Principles for Saving and Investing Your Money By Chris Cagle Most Christians know they should save and invest for retirement or disability. But many find it difficult to adopt a practical theology for managing their money, especially when it comes to saving and investing for a distant and uncertain future. It’s difficult because there are so many perspectives on this topic. Some promote a life of denial, eschewing any luxuries and savings for the sake of the kingdom. Others suggest budgeting, avoiding debt, and regular saving in order to enjoy greater wealth for giving and spending later in life. In the broader culture, the FIRE (Financial PLACE Independence/Retire Early) movement emphasizes extreme frugality and saving to be able to retire before age 40. With all these seemingly inconsistent and conflicting messages, how can you come up with a personal theology of IMAGE money that balances biblical orthodoxy with practicality in saving and investing for the future? H biblical Here are seven E R Eprinciples that may help. 1. Saving for Future Needs Is Biblical Some Christians don’t save for retirement because they believe it’s disobedient (usually quoting Matt. 6:19–20), or they feel guilty about putting money away when others are in such great need. Others believe it isn’t necessary because God will take care of them (Isa. 46:4). And some would like to save but spend everything they make (Prov. 13:18). You may be surprised to learn that saving is actually encouraged in the Bible. Scripture condones saving for known, anticipated needs in the future (Gen. 41; Prov. 6:6–11; Prov. 21:5; Prov. 21:20). You may be surprised to learn that saving is actually encouraged in the Bible. The Bible teaches that it’s possible to wisely save and invest for the future while also being “rich toward God” by “storing up treasures in heaven” (Luke 12:21; Matt. 6:19–21). 2. Saving Honors God and Serves Others It would be easy to think of saving as a purely selfish activity. That can indeed be the case—we need only read about the rich fool in Luke 12—but it doesn’t have to be. Saving honors God because it rightly values money as a gift that He has given to us (James 1:16–17). Instead of unplanned, impulsive, or foolish spending, wise saving demonstrates the importance of stewarding His gifts (Luke 12:47–48). Proper stewardship will put you in a better position to help with important needs as they arise (Eph. 4:28). You can respond more quickly and perhaps in a more significant way (Prov. 3:27). Saving may also allow you to leave an inheritance, blessing your heirs so they can then be a blessing to others (Prov. 13:22). Continue…
3. Procrastination Is a Mistake We all tend to put things off. But by failing to save early, you forfeit one of the most potent financial forces: tax- free compound interest, or earning interest on interest. Most people don’t postpone saving because they think saving is unimportant. Instead, they expect to have more disposable income down the road, or they have more pressing needs that get in the way, including debt payments, low wages, health-care expenses, or the need to save for a child’s education. They plan to get to it later on. But even if things do change down the road, money saved for retirement later has less time to grow (Matt. 25:27), meaning that you end up having to contribute much more to have the same amount if you started today. Just start by doing what you can and gain momentum over time. 4. Debt Is Debilitating The Bible isn’t silent about debt. There obviously weren’t Visa cards or auto loans in Jesus’s time, but lending and borrowing were part of the economic landscape. The Bible doesn’t strictly prohibit debt, but it does characterize debt as a form of bondage (Prov. 22:7). Beyond that, there is a direct correlation between over-spending and too much debt and a low savings rate. In the context of saving, debt comes at a cost. The money needed to service debt, which goes to creditors, is money that can’t be used for anything else. That is the “opportunity cost” of debt. Compare borrowing R1,000 and paying 12 percent interest (R120) versus saving R1,000 and investing it at 6 percent (R60). The real economic benefit is 18 percent (R180)! 5. Wise Investing Is Right and Good Investing isn’t stock trading. It’s not about betting the farm on a hot tip from your brother-in-law. Such speculating amounts to gambling on future events, and most of the time you lose more than you gain (Prov. 28:19; 1 Tim. 6:10). Investing is actually commended if done wisely. It’s about putting money into real businesses that employ people and deliver products or services to customers. Hopefully, the companies we invest in do well and provide a return commensurate with our investment (Prov. 31:10–31; Eccl. 11:1–6). Most of us would do well to invest in low-cost, passively managed, mutual and exchange-traded index funds (ETFs) instead of individual stocks and bonds. We also need to keep an eye out for high fees and expenses (they can be a big drag on returns), not being diversified enough (assets that balance each other), buying and selling at the wrong time (due to emotion), and a lack of knowledge about your investments (don’t buy what you don’t understand). 6. Saving Can Bring Temptations We can be tempted to save for wrong reasons—out of fear and greed or a desire for independence from God and others. If you save out of fear, then you aren’t trusting God (1 Tim. 6:17). If you do it out of greed, you’ve missed the whole point (Prov. 1:19; Mark 8:36; Luke 12:15). And once you’ve acquired some wealth, you don’t want to become like the miser we read about in Ecclesiastes 5:13 or the “rich fool” we read about in Luke 12. The problem with both isn’t that they saved; it’s that they were focused only on themselves and put their faith in riches rather than God. We can be tempted to save for wrong reasons—out of fear and greed or a desire for independence from God and others. Hoarders are consumed by the need to preserve wealth rather than risk it for productive uses and the good of others. It also brings curses (Prov. 11:26) and judgment (Luke 12:16–21; James 5:3; Ps. 39:6; Eccl. 5:13; Zech. 9:3). Continue…
7. Balance Is Key Finding the right balance is the key. On the one hand, we need to set aside something and invest it wisely for future needs. On the other, we want to be generous and remain dependent on God, recognizing that He is the source of our provision and alone controls the future. Whatever we decide, it must be out of a heart of gratitude to God for His kind generosity toward us—a God who is gracious, loving, and merciful (Ps. 107:8–9)—and based on the biblical wisdom He has given us on this topic.
