Business Paihia Inc welcomes you to Paihia We are an incorporation of businesses from Paihia, Waitangi, Opua and Haruru Falls. We aim to build a dynamic business environment and to be influential in decision making in our community. Please accept this welcome pack with our compliments. We extend best wishes for success in your business. We look forward to working with you to further build our vibrant business community.
Why become a member of Business Paihia? Here is what you and your business will gain from this membership. • Business Paihia holds regular meetings providing a forum where members can express their views on any issues that members feel are affecting their businesses and/or the business community in Paihia as a whole. The meetings also inform members about pertinent business and community developments. They are also an excellent place to network with other businesses. • A monthly newsletter is produced to provide up‐to‐date information and to address/voice any issues that have been brought up at the monthly committee meetings. It also lets you know what is happening around the town. • Business Paihia has developed open lines of communication with organisations such as local bodies, national tourism operators, government bodies and regional business associations thus promoting the views of our local business community. • Business Paihia develops and builds on community spirit and promotes Paihia as a top destination, which is, in part, achieved by organising events such as the annual Christmas Parade, the Summer Festival, the New Year’s Eve Fireworks Extravaganza, the Catch “it” Seafood Tournament and the “it” Bay of Islands Festival which is a celebration of the Bay of Islands encompassing fishing, great food, local wines and fantastic entertainment. We always have new events in the pipeline to encourage people to visit Paihia and create a strong community spirit. • Business Paihia started the Paihia Matariki Festival and ensured it was well established into its 6th year before handing the festival over to the artists to manage. • We support local events which historically have brought many tourists to the area such as the Country Rock and Jazz Festivals, conferences and sports events. Of course we are always open to further involvement in successful ‘draw cards’ to our community. • We have strengthened cooperative relationships with other community groups such as the Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, Focus Paihia and the Motel Association to provide a strong community voice in submissions to the Far North District Council including those on the liquor ban, the Council’s relationship with Transit NZ, the need for redevelopment of the service lane in the town centre, improvements to lighting and footpaths, the handling and disposal of rubbish and management of the waterfront reserve. • Business Paihia works closely with community groups and the NZ police to address security and safety issues in Paihia, and successfully set up the Community Patrol in Paihia which in turn got the volunteers manning the Police Station back up and running. These volunteers also help on the busy cruise ship days. • Business Paihia worked to ensure that Cruise Ships have a great visit to the Bay of Islands ‐ we have the pedestrian crossing manned, entertainment for the cruise ship passengers and Ambassadors to greet them and provide information. Business Paihia has representatives on the various cruise ship committees who are continually working to ensure we continue to have cruise ships visit the Bay of Islands. • Business Paihia has been a strong supporter of the Focus on Paihia initiative ‐ where Paihia came together to build a collective vision for the future.
• Business Paihia has gained funding for the Stop Graffiti Campaign in Paihia, and has been working on this for a number of years now.. • Business Paihia gives back to the Community, the Catch “it” Seafood tournament that was organised in conjunction with the “it” Bay of Islands Festival had a wet fish auction where all the proceeds went to St. Johns and the Volunteer Fire Brigade. • Business Paihia has representatives on the Bay of Islands Marketing Group. • Business Paihia is continuously looking at ways to improve Paihia, whether it is through infrastructure, communications with local bodies, or festival and events. • We have developed and continue to update and promote the Paihia website www.paihianz.co.nz. As a Business Paihia member you can list your business for free on the website, this is a comprehensive listing with a link to your website, 2 photos and a video clip. As a Business Paihia member you can also have the opportunity to take up the competitive advertising rates. We welcome your membership. With a large, active membership we can have more influence on key decision makers in promoting the interests of the Paihia area business community. Becoming a member of Business Paihia for the very reasonable fee of $145 (inclusive of gst), will be of great benefit to you in your business.
Some Recent Achievements from Business Paihia Inc’s Records We address issues of importance to the community and actively promote Paihia Following are excerpts from 2011/2012 newsletters. Rugby World Cup, Sept 2011 Finally it has arrived! Rugby World Cup is here and it is fantastic to see everyone in NZ in the spirit of the festival. Paihia has transformed itself with red tape and flags. The shops in town have done a great job of dressing their windows in true World Cup style. Business Paihia has worked hard with the various organizations to ensure we are ready for RWC. Cruising, Sept 2011 Things are changing this year with the increase in the number of cruise ships to the Bay of Islands. We have listened to the inbound tour operators and to what adds value to a ships visit. Things that are well received with the passengers are the Ambassadors on the buses and around town, having a craft market and entertainment. We intend to ensure that these things remain in place and we are also scheduling entertainment for when the cruise ships are here to ensure there is a festival atmosphere throughout town. “it” Bay of Islands Festival, Oct 2011 This whole weekend has been a fantastic tool to promote Paihia to the RWC fans visiting and touring around NZ ‐ many of them are looking for things to do as their teams drop out of the RWC and they will be looking for somewhere to go and we want to draw them here ‐ so please keep promoting these events through your website and database. Community Patrol, Oct 2011 Community Patrol has got a great group of members all doing regular patrols, and there is also a new policeman in town Jimmy Anderson, who was welcomed formally earlier in the month at the Memorial Hall ‐ this was a great occasion with representatives from many groups there. A big thank you to the Community Patrol for organising this and the morning tea (feast!) This now gives us a team of three police in Paihia Extra Toilets, Oct 2011 Business Paihia has organised extra toilets next week, with the support of FNDC, ‐ this is a self contained unit with 15 toilets and handwashing facilities. It will be located up by the toilets on Williams Road. This is to ensure we have plenty of facilities for the cruise ships coming in next week, extra visitors around and can also be utilised for the festival. Russell vs Paihia Street Competition, Oct 2011 The sun was shining, the community was out in force and Paihia school were performing a welcome when the judges Ann Court, Lulu from Russell and Heinz Marti arrived in Paihia by helicopter to be transferred to Williams Rd by beach cleaner! All in all a rather interesting mix! Paihia did take away the prestige of having the best dressed street and the scales on this were tipped by the great community effort and spirit! It was a great afternoon and a lovely way for people to join together decorating the street and sharing food ‐ locals and visitors alike joined in. Thank you to everyone for participating! Catch "it", Nov 2011 Following each day of fishing the fresh catch is auctioned and all the proceeds go to the local Fire Brigade and St.Johns. This year $2,732.00 was raised for St. Johns and the Fire Brigade. Nov 2011 The executive has had a busy month ‐ as well as many of them being involved in the festival, they have been all working on different things. ‐ The parking issue is resolved with a parking warden reinstated from October to April. ‐ They have also been in contact with FNH regarding the campervans that have been using the carpark in town especially ones that are not fully self contained. ‐ Lobbying the Police and Government for more Police Officers in Paihia ‐ Supporting the Community Board on a liquor ban all year round
A town with personality! Dec 2011 What an awesome parade!! The Paihia Christmas Parade once again had amazing floats in the theme 'Rivers of the World', there was the Royal Queen herself on the Thames, Cleopatra on the Nile, The Zambezi, Taniwhas and Dolphins, and of course the Waitangi River. The energy and time that goes into these floats is just fantastic, it is an extremely spectacular parade to watch as everyone puts in 110% effort. Happy New Year! Jan 2012 Despite the dodgy weather the fireworks went ahead, with the biggest display we have had yet! Many thanks to Heinz Marti who spends hours organisng this display. And everyone that contributed towards it! Jan 2012 Unfortunately despite the executive committee efforts requesting cleaners etc prior to New Years Day the streets were left in quite a state with litter and broken bottles all over the place and only one person cleaning up. Business Paihia made calls on the day to get the streets cleaned and toilets stocked with toilet paper and cleaned. The executive has also written a letter expressing their disappointment and concern to ensure this situation does not arise again. Summer Success, Feb 2012 Town was looking vibrant with all the different activities going on from the Summer Festival, Fuse Circus, Cruise Ship Market and buskers in January. Many visitors that joined in the Summer Festival commented on this and it is something to really think about ‐ keeping on creating a vibrant atmosphere in Paihia all year around. Any ideas welcome for the next 12 months! The Summer Festival, Feb 2012 The Summer Festival itself which is one of Business Paihia's annual events went really well with many visitors and families attending daily. Parents do welcome organised activities that are at no charge to them where kids can get together and create, exercise and participate. As always we get the feedback from families out of the region who plan their holiday to coincide with the festival. Feb 2012 The Committee is always looking at ways to ensure Paihia businesses prosper whether it is by creating and supporting events, supporting the cruise ship program etc. They recognise that more and more businesses are starting to close down throughout the area. This is something the committee is going to focus on over the coming months ‐ to see what can be done to ensure businesses can survive and do well April 2012 Business Paihia has had a busy month sending a submission was put into FNDC and NRC for the long term. Organising the Public Meeting and ongoing lobbying to re the lack of Police in Paihia etc. Tips on coping in the current economic climate, April 2012 Business Paihia Executive have put together some tips based on the 7S of Success for members. It is really something to follow in the good times as well as the not so good! “it” Festival June 2012 Tickets will be released for the festival beginning of August, we will be launching with a Grab One Special ‐ which will be for Grab One Northland and Auckland so a potential market of 22,000 subscribers in Northland and 1/2million subscribers in Auckland. A great way to promote the festival and Paihia ‐ watch this space!
