OFSAA NEWS 2019-20 Fun...Fitness...Challenges...Leadership Schools across the province this year have been providing their students with new, fun activities through their ‘Try Day’ programs. Students also had the opportunity to contribute to the organization and leadership of Try Day. New, non-traditional sports and physical activities motivate students and help them enjoy participating and thus increase their level of fitness. New fitness equipment, inclusive games of low organization (challenging rope climbs, exciting outdoor adventures, prep games for other sports) and all activities engaged students of all grades and skill levels. Once again, thanks to the Ministry of Education as over 125 secondary schools received up to $700 to conduct these special days. School programs can adapt to demographic changes, provide more inclusive programs, and enable as many students as possible to be active. Character Athlete Award 2019-20 OFSAA’s Character Athlete Award celebrates the efforts of the exceptional student-athletes in Ontario who best exemplify the characteristics that OFSAA is founded on. Nominations come to the OFSAA office detailing the exceptional character of student-athletes across Ontario, inspiring those around them with their involvement on the playing field and in the classroom, in both school and community. Selecting just one male and one female recipient of the OFSAA Character Athlete Award is never easy, but the following two individuals stood out for their commitment to OFSAA’s values of leadership, equity, respect and sportsmanship. Thank you to our sponsor Jostens for donating a $1000 grant to our female and male recipient. First and foremost on behalf of Geoff Hiscox and the entire OFSAA 2020 Badminton Committee I want to express our great disappointment in having to cancel/postpone our Championship Festival here in London this May. We believe that we had an outstanding event planned with our partners here in the community which included the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Fanshawe College and the City of London’s Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre, Sports Tourism London and Tourism London. Everything was ready and in place to welcome athletes and coaches from across the province. We even had our Oakridge Badminton Team shirts ready to go. We were especially excited to have Alex Kopacz agree to be our Guest Speaker at the Banquet. Alex was born and raised in London and competed for Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School (London) at the W.O.S.S.A.A. Badminton Championships. He went on to become the Two Man Bobsleigh Gold Medalist at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeong Chang, South Korea.
