GLENROSE NEWS LEADER IN PROVIDING SPECIALIZED TERTIARY REHABILITATION ACROSS THE LIFESPAN New Edmonton Oilers Pediatric Procedure Room Unveiled The Glenrose Hospital proudly unveiled the new Hunter-themed, Edmonton Oilers Pediatric Procedure Room. The room was completed in partnership between the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and the Glenrose Foundation. The space is located on Unit 201 and features graphics of the Oilers mascot, Hunter as well as state-of-the-art equipment and items for kids comfort. Having this room means that minor procedures no longer need to be completed in children’s rooms, allowing them to keep their rooms as a safe place. To celebrate the opening, members of the Oilers Community Foundation board and staff, including several Oilers alumni visited the room and even brought a special guest, Hunter himself. Hunter played with the kids and tested out the features of the room while admiring his pictures. Seating Services Join Forces for Education Day On Feb 20th, the Glenrose Seating Service and the Edmonton Zone Seating Services joined forces to participate in an education day – ‘Coaching for Performance’ in addition to completing zone focused program planning. This collaboration of 21 zone seating therapists was intended to support capacity building as we shift to a hub and spoke model to improve access to specialized seating services. The day was made even more valuable with a generous donation from the ‘Friends of Glenrose’ who paid for refreshments and lunch. AWARDS & HONOURS Glenrose Dental Clinic Receives Commendation Earlier this month the Glenrose Dental Clinic received commendation from a patient who attended the clinic. “The staff and physicians at the Glenrose Dental Clinic are absolutely amazing. From my very first phone call, they were comforting and understanding about fears and anxiety around treatment. They made me feel comfortable and cared about. I highly recommend this clinic. I have always had a great fear of dentistry but this was an incredible experience and I’m actually looking forward to my next visit. Grateful! This is how dentistry should be being done.” Glenrose Celebrates the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife The World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. Nurses play a vital role in providing rehabilitation health services at the Glenrose. To celebrate nursing contributions, the Nursing Professional Practice team will be featuring Glenrose Nurses in various roles, throughout the year with monthly publications of the Nurse to Know. Glenrose staff can join the 2020 Year of the Nurse celebrations, by viewing the Nurse to Know display posted on the Life Long Learning Tree located on the main floor wall, between the front entrance and the Corner Store. February’s Nurse to Know is Catherine (Cathy) Hill, Interim Senior Operating Officer at the Glenrose. What does wellness mean to you & why is it important? “…to me, wellness means a combination of physical, emotional & spiritual health. I learned a long time ago that in order to care for other people, you need to care for yourself…” What small things do you do to give yourself your best day? “…I look after my physical self through proper nutrition, proper sleep, exercise & relaxation…” How do you relax at the end of a work day? “…I am a foodie and like to cook, once supper is finished, I enjoy reading & watching TV, walking my 2 little dogs, going to the cottage as much as I can, and recently I’ve begun to create tile mosaic artwork to decorate my garden and the gardens of my friends…” Over the past decade, what Alberta Health Services events or accomplishments stand out to you? “…there are many, but becoming Alberta Health Services to begin with – bringing programs together from all different zones was a huge undertaking. There has also been a lot of work done to help improve patient wait-times; development of electronic managerial tools that help make things run more efficiently; the overall culture of AHS has evolved, and all of these efforts have helped our front line staff in their daily work, have contributed to improved patient care; and for the 3rd year in a row, AHS has been named to Canada’s Top 100 Employers…” What influenced your choice to become a nurse? “…I remember being a very strong student in the sciences, and I grew up in a small community with no hospital but Page 6
with a strong public health nurse presence. I became very interested in the type of work those nurses were doing to contribute to the health of our citizens…” What is the greatest reward that comes from holding the position of Senior Operating Officer at the Glenrose? “…as a newly graduate nurse, I had never envisioned that I would ever work with a team of professionals besides nursing, allied health and physicians. I am so proud to have support from researchers, rehab engineers, motion analyst and others who hold unique positions here at GRH…” What qualities do you value in your fellow nurse leaders? “…I value each person’s unique skill-set; and need to recognize the expertise of non-nurse leaders as well. Integrating everyone’s knowledge & skills benefits all of us; I admire the experience of my colleagues, their dedication, and the support they offer…” What do you see as the future role of the nurse at the Glenrose Hospital? “…I would love to see nurses play a larger role in research activities. Staying current in the world of research ensures that nurses are always able to provide evidence-informed decisions about best practice methods of patient care delivery; the nurse of the future will need to be ‘tech-savvy’, and will need to have a vision of how to support patients in creative, non-traditional ways; nurses of tomorrow should focus on helping people achieve their health goals within their own unique patient-centered circumstances…” What is one word of advice you would give to a new graduate nurse? “…find a clinical area that you’re passionate about; embrace the commitment to life-long learning and evidence based practice; consider all opportunities that are presented to you…” GLENROSE EVENTS Glenrose Celebrates National Therapeutic Recreation Month National Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Month is celebrated throughout the month of February across Canada. Circle of Courage Impact Event Since 2013 a special group of donors has committed at least $1000 each to join the Circle of Courage. The group funds critical projects and equipment at the Glenrose Hospital, including the Clinical Driving Simulator, the Pediatric Family Room and the EKSO skeleton. On February 27th the Glenrose Foundation invited all members of the Circle of Courage to attend a special impact event where they saw first-hand the impact of their donation. They were taken to various areas of the hospital to view the equipment and programs and hear from the staff about the impact on their patients’ lives.
