Issue 6 | page 11 BGC Precast develop bridge beam capability Precast BGC Precast has recently established a new stressing bed to manufacture prestressed bridge beams to supply BGC Contracting and other contractors on Water Corporation’s Bridge Replacement Program. This follows BGC Contracting being awarded two contracts with Water Corporation to replace five bridges in Western Australia’s South West region. BGC Contracting saw an opportunity for the BGC Group to build capability and worked with BGC Precast to establish the new stressing bed. BGC Precast Business Development Manager Phil Surridge said it had become increasingly clear that the business required the capability to manufacture its own prestressed beams, a useful co-product to its hollowcore flooring. To do so, BGC Precast turned its eye to a collection of old shutters, left over from a previous project. With some innovative thinking, the team converted scrap materials into a state-of-the-art stressing bed, including heating pipes for accelerated curing. The end product is a concrete beam that is lighter, more cost effective and easy to transport. Production commenced earlier this year to deliver 52 specialised bridge beams to BGC Contracting. “This is an exciting development for us. It’s been challenging to meet Contracting’s timeframe, but it’s an outstanding result and we now have a great solution in place for future orders.” Phil Surridge Precast Business Development Manager.
