17 –20 July 2020 by Greg Rashford Picnic at Hanging Rock and Nundle State Forests With a late summer trip to the Victorian High Country cancelled (bush fires) and an early May sambar hunt also cancelled (Covid 19) a mid year NSW State Forest hunt was well overdue. A number of Brisbane Branch members decided to take ad- vantage of a window in easing of border restrictions to spend a few days at Nundle/Hanging Rock. Finally mid July arrived and with border passes in hand the plan was to meet in Tenterfield early Thursday and convoy to Nundle approaching from the east via Walcha. Traffic was reasonably light and with only a quick leg stretch and refuel in Walcha we ar- rived at the Ponderosa Camp Area with plenty of daylight to set up camp and familiarize ourselves with the layout of State Forests. Recent rains had settled any dust and made sections of fire road greasy but still navigable by four- wheel drive. For some of us this was our first visit to Nundle/Hanging Rock so time invested studying topo maps and google earth helped identify potential hunting areas. These areas were ground proofed with a familiarization tour after camp was set up. Nundle/Hanging Rock is on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range and well over 1200m high in places. Mid- winter temperatures here plummet to well below zero but other than being cold we mainly experienced clear days. I’m informed this is in contrast to some previous Branch hunts when white outs, horizontal sleet, hail and snow have necessitated long hours confined to tents. For the next few days, the daily ritual of early morning and late afternoon ‘deer o clock’ hunts continued with time to chill out around camp during the day. Some took ad- vantage of the close proximity to Nundle to head into town for a dose of civilization. November 2020 - Rubs ‘N Roars Page 4 ADA Brisbane Branch
On the Sunday a DPI Ranger called in for a chat to check our paperwork was in order. These guys cover a wide area and are very knowledgeable and informative on current status of forests and what animals are being harvested. I’ve previously noticed how keen the GMA folk in Victoria and now this DPI Ranger in NSW are to have a chat and answer questions. A note was made to self to use this these guys whenever future opportunity presents itself. Every hunter has their own unique style for still hunting, glassing etc and this particular ranger sug- gested that a wait and ambush approach on known game trails would be most productive given the level of local hunting pressure. Food for thought? I thought I’d try an ambush and set myself up one even- ing on the eastern side of a north - south valley that led to fringe country about a kilometre to the south. I had a nar- row shooting lane down into the valley at approximately 90 degrees and 150 yards to the dry creek bed. Right on queue about half hour before sunset 4 small grey year- lings slowly made there way south along the creek bed. I love it when a plan comes together unfortunately, I made a rookie error and pulled my shot (buck fever?) and watched helplessly as the deer vanished into the scrub. Another learning experience however the memories of watching those deer casually walk towards the shooting lane made the trip worthwhile. Nundle/Hanging Rock are great forests to visit with a mixture of native eucalypt and pine plantation bordering on good grazing country. These forests are well used and it was not uncommon to come across motorbike riders, campers or others out walking or collecting firewood etc. It seems such a waste that Qld does not provide the same opportunity for hunters that our southern states do. Hopefully one day that will change. One note of caution if travelling with dogs is the level of 1080 baiting in parts of the forest. Despite plenty of fresh sign, no venison made it into the freezer. 2021 R-Licence Hunt Ideas Off the back of a quiet year on the R-licence hunts below are a few ideas in mind for next year. We are always open to suggestions and locations will be finalised early in the new year. A NSW DPI R-License is required to hunt these forests. If you need to sit the course, please speak to our Branch trainer Joe Hennessey to arrange a time. Make sure you are self-sufficient on these hunts, as in most cases the closest shop is a while away. Make sure you have enough food and water plus anything else you may require. Check NSW DPI’s website for changes in regulations, It’s up to you to make sure you are compliant. The Cooking Game. 1 lb. venison 1 egg 5 tbsp. cornflour, separated 1 tsp. kosher salt, separated Canola or vegetable oil for frying 1/3 cup sweet chilli sauce 1/3 cup Hoisin sauce 1 tsp. red chilli flakes 1 1/2 tbsp. apple cider vine- gar 1/4 cup water 1 tsp. sugar 1 red capsicum Half an onion 5 cloves of garlic, minced Freshly cooked white rice Recipe sourced from https://www.themeateater.com/cook/recipes/sweet-and-sour-venison-recipe METHOD Trim off silver skin and slice thinly against the grain. In a small bowl, beat the egg and mix in a tablespoon of cornflour and 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt. Add sliced venison, mix, and re- frigerate covered for one hour. Meanwhile, remove ribs and seeds from the red capsicum and cut into 1-inch squares. Cut the onion into similar-sized pieces. In a small bowl, combine sweet chilli sauce, Hoisin sauce, red chilli flakes, vinegar, water, 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt and sugar, and set aside. When the venison is done marinating, add the remaining cornflour to the bowl and stir to coat. In a saucepan, heat 1 inch of oil to 350 degrees. Carefully separate venison pieces and drop into the hot oil one by one—do not crowd the pan. Once the pieces start turning golden at the edges (1 to 2 minutes), remove and drain on paper towels. Repeat with the rest of the venison. While the venison is frying, add oil to coat the bottom of a frying pan/wok over medium- high heat. Add onion and red capsicum and sauté until caramelized at the edges. Lower heat to medium, then add minced garlic and a pinch of salt. Sauté for 30 seconds. Add the sauce to the pan and bring it to a low boil, stirring frequently and being careful not to scorch the bottom. Add the cooked venison and toss to coat. Simmer for a couple minutes until thickened and warmed through. Serve hot with white rice. Garnish with sliced spring onions. ENJOY! November 2020 - Rubs ‘N Roars Page 9 ADA Brisbane Branch

Letter from the Editor Harriett Hennessey Rubs ‘N Roars editor Hello to all, My name is Harriett Hennessey and I have been an active ADA member since 2018. Some of you may already know me, and those who don’t I hope we can meet and exchange stories over the coming year during branch events. Hunting certainly was not on my radar having grown up in the city and has turned into a hobby I take pride in, both for the experience and thrill of the chase and bringing home quality meat for our family. I’ve always enjoyed reading the ADA Magazines and in particular our Branch Rubs and Roars. It is always enjoyable to see and read others experiences both present and past. I encourage an- yone with a story to write a brief recount for others to enjoy. Whether a hunt is successful or not there is always a tale… I’ll leave it at that for now and hope to engage with you all soon as restrictions begin to lift. Happy Hunting Brisbane! HH. Marksmanship Days! Due to Covid19 marksmanship has been off the cards throughout the year. We hope 2021 will see the return of marksmanship training on the 4th Sunday of every month.
