Management Committee Members & Trustees shown in bold WELCOME Welcome to the 2019/20 BHYC programme. We hope the information is both useful and encourages you to take part in our varied sailing and social activities. We look forward to seeing you over the course of the year on and off the water. WEBSITE Members are reminded that the website www.bhyc.org.uk provides a valuable source of information about the Club’s organisation, facilities, and activities. You can find up to date sailing (racing, results, instructions, cruising, and training), social programmes and we hire sailing boats to our Members so our boat hire terms and conditions and how to reserve a Club boat is on our website. Log on to the Members’ Area to access all the information you need, including details of discounts offered by the ferry operators and other companies. Questions, comments, and suggestions for improvement should be addressed by email to webmaster@bhyc.org.uk NEWSLETTER The Club produces a Newsletter which is published every Wednesday; it keeps you up to date with the latest Club activities containing details of forthcoming events, both sailing and social. HOUSE COMMITTEE The House Committee team work in and around the Clubhouse, maintaining and improving member facilities for the benefit of all. Working parties, primarily on a Wednesday, work throughout the year tackling prioritised work to make our Clubhouse and boat areas operable, as well as welcoming and fit for purpose. We would be delighted to see you join us working inside or out if you are able to do so. It is these working parties that keep the Club well maintained and looking its best for all our members and their guests. They are well appreciated and really make a difference. What a great way to meet like minded members and also to grow your social network. For further details of our work and priorities watch the Newsletter and notice board or alternatively contact Rear Commodore House, Janette Webb - email house@bhyc.org.uk CLUB GROUPS AND SECTIONS LADIES’ LUNCHEON A regular enjoyable and entertaining meeting for our lady Members. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 1230hrs for a 1300hrs lunch (excluding the months of August and September where alternative venues are sourced). We invite speakers throughout the year that cover a variety of topics and our lunch is provided by the Club's Caterers, at a pre-set cost payable on the day. At the end of play prizes are awarded to those players with the highest and lowest scores . A Christmas Lunch is held annually with an 'end of term' lunch which takes place on the last Thursday in April before the final bridge session. At both lunches complimentary wine is offered with a raffle, the prize being a full BHYC membership. New members are most welcome to join this friendly and non competitive group of players. CADETS The cadet section is a very sociable and vibrant part of Club life. It is run by volunteers and we are always on the lookout for new ideas for events from cadets and their families and for volunteers to help out. Events are open to Members children of all ages and their parents and carers whether or not they are budding or current sailors. Events are held at least once a month and parents and carers are encouraged to stay and join in the fun, it's a great way of meeting new friends, learning about cadet sailing opportunities and experiencing some very happy times.
We have lots of ideas under development in addition to the listed events, so please do sign up to the cadet contact group via training@bhyc.org.uk and look out for details in the Club weekly newsletter, Club Facebook pages and on the Club notice board. Current suggestions include summer beach BBQs, picnic sails, sailing and racing workshops, on the water games and local cinema trips. We look forward to seeing you. If you would like to contact us please email training@bhyc.org.uk TUESDAY TALKS A wide-ranging programme of Tuesday Talks has been given during the winter months for several years and it is intended that this should happen again during the winter 2019/20. The topics are of general interest, are not confined to boating, are not technical and should appeal to all. It is hoped that members will continue to enjoy another interesting series of talks during the dark months at both the end of 2019 and the early part of 2020. The talks start at 2000hrs, the bar will be open on these evenings and a special supper menu will be available; guests are welcome so long as they are signed in. The dates of the talks for next winter are shown below; full details of the Talks will be published at a later date and will also appear in the Newsletter and on the notice board at least a week before hand. 2019:- 08 & 22 January, 05 &19 February, 05 &19 March. 15 & 29 October, 12 & 26 November, 03 December 2020:- 07 & 21 Jan, 04 & 18 Feb, 03 & 17 & 31 Mar LADIES THAT LAUNCH (LTL) The Ladies that Launch group encourages and supports women sailors of all abilities to spend as much time as we can out on the water improving our sailing, racing and boating skills. Our Ladies that Launch group’s ethos is to support each other and ensure that everyone has opportunities to improve their skills. That might be through RYA accredited group and individual training delivered by our Chief Instructor or mentoring and practice sessions supported by club members. We enjoy the fun, friendships and camaraderie we forge as we hone our confidence and technical skills out on the water. Many good friendships have been formed on and off the water on the back of our Come Sail with Us events (listed in this Sailing Programme), BHYC training courses, workshops, social sailing and racing activities which take place throughout the year. We also enjoy a wide range of social activities, events and evenings, details of which can be found on our section in the Club newsletter or on our lively Facebook pages. If you are interested or would like to know more about joining us please contact Linda Briant or Polly Schafer and email ltl@bhyc.org.uk for more details. SCOW OWNERS We want to encourage as many Scows on the water as possible in 2019. Scows don't have to race (although many find that gives a sense of purpose to the sail and makes it more fun), just get yourself out on the water and enjoy some sailing time with like-minded people. We have allocated a date for a sail
round to Priory Bay for a summer picnic, bring the family. This will hopefully take place in July. We try to have Scow social suppers from time to time. If you have any other social Scow ideas please do not hesitate to contact the Scow Captain Anne Barlow by sending an email to sailing@bhyc.org.uk Anne would be happy to help you rig and tune your scow as well as answer any questions about the Scow class. SAILING COMMITTEE Our aim is to encourage safe and enjoyable sailing for all members, whether it is Club racing, cruising, training activities or sailing for pleasure on your own. Please do ask a member of the Sailing Committee or the Boatman should you require advice or assistance (contact details below) and remember we have boats you can hire and also have 1-2-1 tuition for those who need guidance and further support. All sailors and helpers taking part in Club-organised activities should familiarise themselves with the BHYC Safety Policy, which is available in the Club foyer, the office, Jubilee Centre or on the website. There will be specific courses under the RYA Youth and Adult sailing schemes, along with advanced modules and RYA Powerboat Training during the year in a selection of Club training boats. Full Racing Instructions covering all Club races are available on the BHYC website and from the foyer or The Jubilee Centre. Racing instructions covering the events organised under the burgee of East Wight Combined Clubs (EWCC) will be issued in the summer as part of their Regatta Series Programme. It is essential that helms sign the indemnity form in the Jubilee Centre before their first sail of the season. All helms must Sign-On at the race box. We start our main season at the Easter Series with a series of eight races. Please study BHYC Racing and Training programme in the middle of this
booklet where full details are given; we have tried our very best to please everyone from racers to "just potterers" alike. More information will follow throughout the season in the Club Newsletter. Please pick up a EWCC 2019 Programme at the bar for details of Regattas around the region when available in April. FORMAT OF RACING To reduce congestion in the harbour and to reduce the risk of collision, the majority of starts at summer weekends will be from a committee boat outside the harbour as identified below. There will still be starts from the Harbour Line for all races in the Icebreaker, Breakfast, and Evening series. Where two races are designated, the points from each race will contribute towards the series totals. Between Easter and June a number of Cadet Challenges will be organised in conjunction the racing. This is primarily for cadets and novices (although all welcome), at the discretion of the training programme leader on the day. There will be a number of short races from a committee boat, depending on the weather. The schedule of racing for the season is given in the sailing programme. Apart from the Icebreaker Series, which is for Scows and single handed Handicap boats only, and other special races as indicated in the racing instructions, dinghies will race in separate groups depending on numbers (additional class racing may be introduced should any particular class generate an average of 5 entry per race in the preceding series) with 5 min between starts. The start time and starting line, Home (H) or Committee Boat (CB), shown in the programme is for the first race. For the committee boat starts please allow enough time to sail out of the harbour and get to the committee boat. SAILING SUPPORT CREWS "DUTYMAN" All competitors are encouraged to sign on to "Dutyman", on the website. It is your chance to volunteer to be Race Officer, Race Officer's Assistant, Patrol Boat Helm or Patrol Boat Crew. You can do as many duties as you like although those participating in sailing will be expected to undertake duties which will be allocated according to experience / qualification. The next few weeks’ diary of duties is always put in the newsletter and more than those few weeks if available on the website. Should you have any difficulties with "Dutyman" please speak to anyone on the Sailing Committee who would welcome your question. Helms require a minimum of RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate and preferably a VHF Certificate. Crews need no qualifications but are expected to be reasonably fit and agile. Crews wishing to gain qualifications should watch the notice board and newsletter for details of courses. Offers of help for support boat duties should contact dutyman@bhyc.org.uk Race Officers should arrive 1 hour 30 minutes before the race for Committee Boat (CB) starts and 1 hour before the start for Home (H) Starts. Crews should report to the Race Officer 1 hour 30 minutes prior to Committee Boat (CB) Start and at least 1 hour before a Home (H) Start. NOVICES There is not a specific race for Novices outside the Cadet and Novice Regatta on the 27th August. However any novice is always welcome to join in any race and we will try to have a coach on the water to assist you round the course. If on any day there are a number of Novices who would like to race separately
we will try to organise a separate course. A novice is someone with less than two seasons’ racing experience. In each single-hander (including Scows) the helm must be a novice but an experienced advisor may be carried. BHYC REGATTA The BHYC Regatta will be on 24th and 25th August. Details and racing instructions will be available on the BHYC website and in the East Wight Combined Clubs website (www.ewcc.co.uk) and their Programme which also provides information on other local regattas. The Cadet Regatta will be on the 5th & 6th August, There will be racing outside the harbour followed by fun and games ashore. Full details will be posted on the notice board. Bembridge Village Regatta on Saturday 4th August, hosted by BSC with BHYC. This is followed on the Saturday 4th August by the EWCC Dinghy Regatta. Scow Open Championships will take place on 18th August, Parade of Sail around the fort to be confirmed in August. Full details of all the Regattas can be found in the East Wight Combined Clubs (EWCC) Programme available from the Club bar from April. INTER-CLUB RACING Apart from the EWCC Regattas, there are ‘home and away’ interclub team events for Scows. These are against Yarmouth and other local clubs. BHYC competes with four other clubs in Mermaids and a team race against SVYC during June and July. Dates for these will appear in this Programme. All are welcome to these events both to sail and support. WAYFARERS AND SWANS The Wayfarer Series for the coveted Wayfarer Cup will run throughout the season. The Wayfarer Shield will be awarded to the crew who have managed the most race starts over the course of the season. There is also a Swan Series which runs throughout the season in conjunction with the Club Racing programme with a dedicated Swan Trophy awarded to the winner. There is a growing number of Swans within the Club. The Club has its own Swan which can be hired for racing and pottering. There is also an active Swan Owner section which aims to get as many Swans sailing as possible. HIRE OF CLUB BOATS There are a number of Club boats that can be hired when there is a Club event on. If you wish to book a boat then please fill in the interactive form on the website and submit it. CUPS AND TROPHIES Cups and Trophies will be awarded to the overall winners in Fast Handicap, Slow Handicap and Scow Class, other classes subject to entrants, in each of the series. The Sailing Committee will consider the addition of cups for other classes at the end of the season. The prizes will be presented twice a year. At the Fitting out supper in March prizes will be presented for the Frostbite series also special prizes to include
prizes for crews. The Icebreaker prizes will be presented on the last day of the series. At the Laying up supper in October all the prizes from the Easter to the Autumn Series are presented along with the special races for that season. Any cups or trophies for the regattas will be presented on the last day of those Regattas as laid out in the EWCC programme. A full breakdown of the prizes presented and the winners is available on the BHYC Web site via the Club’s results page.
