Boundary e-News
May 24, 2021

Dear Boundary Families,

We must begin this weekend message with a huge thank you to all of you. Your diligence in adhering to the
current Public Health Orders has had a significant impact on the health and safety of our community. Just 2
weeks ago we had been receiving daily District messages informing us of exposures and the subsequent self-
monitor, and some self-isolation, instructions for many different schools in North Vancouver. Boundary has
done very well in this regard with a very minimal number of exposures and subsequent VCH instructions. This
past week, we did not receive a single message regarding a school exposure in North Vancouver. Your
diligence in following the required PHO safety protocols is having a profoundly positive impact! We thank you
for this hard work.

We hope that this May long weekend is filled with all of the things you and your family love to do close to
home. We are so fortunate to live right inside a world-renowned vacation playground! Our mountain trails and
access to beaches, rivers, and streams has kept many of us active and exploring throughout the recent months.
We continue to implore that you venture out with accurate knowledge, a thoughtful plan, and all of the ‘just in
case’ equipment you may need to help deal with any unexpected situation. Please take the time to engage with
the new “Survive Your Own Adventure” https://www.northshorerescue.com/education/interactive-video/
online interact video tool produced by North Shore Rescue. Making life-saving decisions begin BEFORE you
leave home and continue throughout your adventure.

With recent North Shore wilderness events in the news, we want to continue to ensure that our students and
their families have accurate information to help stay safe in this beautiful part of our world. In the coming
weeks, Boundary students will be participating in live, online workshops with the North Shore Black Bear
Society https://northshorebears.com/ The NSBBS work in schools has been instrumental in building
community knowledge around co-existing with bears and other wildlife that walked these lands well before our
communities were established. Replacing fear with education will keep our communities and our beautiful
wildlife safe and thriving.

Please stay safe and play safe. Breathe in the fresh warm air close to home, be prepared, and continue to choose
kindness wherever you go. The smallest act can make the biggest impact in someone’s life.

Boundary News
Bike to School Week
From May 31st to June 4th, we are encouraging all students and parents to join our annual celebration to bike,
roll, or walk to school. Classroom teachers will be recording the number of students that “roll” to school to
enter in a school-wide class contest. Each student that “rolls” to school will count for one entry for the class. At
the end of the week, we will do a draw for the class prize. Don’t worry if you live too far away, you can always
park a few blocks away and roll the rest of the way to the school.

Division E02 Interviews Ministers of the Environment (https://bit.ly/3vvJdZr)
For the past few weeks, students in E02, Mr. Coward / Ms. Wellbelove’s class have been studying climate
change and how we might make our communities more sustainable. To conclude their unit, they were given an
opportunity to interview the provincial and federal Ministers of the Environment and Climate Change; George
Heyman and Jonathan Wilkinson. They enquired about the government’s plan to reduce Canada’s CO2
emissions, how might vulnerable species, like the Southern Resident Killer Whales be protected, and what they
can do as youth to effect positive change at home, at school, and in their communities. Students were poised and
professional – proud advocates for their generation.

Leaving Early from School
If you require your child to leave school for any reason, please send a message to the classroom teacher and the
school office at boundary@sd44.ca . A little pre-planning from home will reduce the number of disruptions to
the class and the office, as well, allow for a smooth transition for your child.

2021-2022 Class Placement
For those parents/guardians who feel the need to provide additional information describing learning style and/or
emotional and social needs of your child: please complete the Placement Form ONLY if you have information
that the current teacher and/or principal do not have and should consider when placing your child. An
accompanying letter is not necessary and will not be accepted. Please email the placement form to Mr.
MacLeod at tmacleod@sd44.ca no later than May 28th, 2021. Please visit the following link to find out more
information: https://bit.ly/3bFw2dl .

School Supplies & Agenda for 2021-2022 School Year
Payments for school supplies and agendas (each item to be paid for separately) for the 2021-2021 school year
will be available to purchase through the School Cash online system. For more information, please see our
school’s website (https://bit.ly/3tP46wP ). Order deadline is May 31st.

Lost and Found
Check out our lost and found table that is set out each day at the front of the school for any items that your child
might have misplaced. Thank you to everyone that has already stopped by. Please see the following link to see
what is left. (https://bit.ly/3dl0Pgs).
School Planning Committee
We are looking for two parents to be on our school planning committee. This committee consists of Boundary
staff (administrators, EAs and teachers), often students and parents. Unlike previous years, this year’s
commitment will be relatively minor as we will be reflecting on this work and will be working on minimal
revisions to carry forward to the 2021-2022 school year. If you can commit to 2-3 online meetings (about 45-60
minutes long) during the school day, please email Mr. MacLeod at tmacleod@sd44.ca with your interest.

Puzzle of The Week #21
This week’s puzzle is now posted. Please see the end of the newsletter or click on this link; https://bit.ly/334qWWz

BPAC News
Interested in joining the PAC Exec?
At this time of year, we start looking forward to the next school year and the composition of the PAC
Executive. Please email Claire (chair@boundarypac.ca) if you are interested in joining the Exec or would like
more information. We are also hoping for the return of some in school events and the return of hot lunch at
some point during the 2021-22 school year, and so there will be more opportunities for everyone to get
involved!

Grade 7 Bottle Drive
The Grade 7 bottle drives have proved so successful we are doing it one last time! Save up your recycling and
bring to the school on the morning of Saturday, May 29th. Money raised will go towards a yearbook for our
grads and a “swag bag” to commemorate their move up to high school.
We do also still have masks available if anyone would like to buy a Bobcats mask. Order at
this link; https://forms.gle/P21kPsRK6Hevrydp9

School Trustee By-election May 29th
On May 29th, the District of North Vancouver is voting for a new school trustee. School trustees are your
elected representatives who are responsible for the good governance of our public schools. Trustees listen to
your concerns and support system change where it is needed; they set policies that affect your kids and
advocate for resources for student learning. Learn about the election (https://www.dnv.org/byelection-2021) and the candidates
(https://www.dnv.org/candidate-profiles-2021). If you live in the District of North Vancouver, don’t forget to vote on May 29th at
Argyle Secondary School.
Reminders
Are You Moving?
If your child(ren) is in Kindergarten to grade 6, please let the office know if you are planning on leaving
Boundary for the 2021-2022 school year. This information is extremely valuable as we start to plan for the next
school year.

Message from The Grade 7 Committee
Hello Boundary Community. As the grade 7s prepare for their transition to high school we are hoping to send
them off with a “Congratulatory” swag bag to say how proud we are of their accomplishments at Boundary.
Unfortunately, a large scale, formal event is not permitted for the students is not allowed because of the current
health orders. Any businesses or families that would like to contribute to this gift for them would be greatly
appreciated.

If your business would like to sponsor a small token for each child ($5 gift card, free introductory lesson,
sample of your product, the bag it all comes in!) it would be a great way to show your support and send off our
grade 7s in style. Likewise, if you are a family wanting to wish them well, a small treat would add to the
excitement (bag of chips, pack of gum, socks, paints, soap). Cash is also always happily accepted, and the
committee can take care of the shopping on behalf of the school community. We are asking that the gift
donation can be appreciated by any student regardless of gender and that there are 65 units of whatever the
contribution is, so we can put one in every bag.

If you would like to donate you can email Boundarygrade7grad@gmail.com, we would be happy to pick it up
from your business or home or arrange a hand off at school. We will be accepting gifts until June 17. Many
thanks for your support of the students in their passage to high school.

Wheels on the School Grounds
We encourage all students and parents to walk, wheel or roll to school, but we please ask that when
you reach the school grounds; you walk your transportation to your destination. Wheeling around the
school grounds put students at risk as they may not be expecting a bike crossing the middle of the
soccer field or a scooter sneaking up on them in the undercover area. These expectations are from 8:00am to
3:30pm. Thank you.

Safe Arrival / Student Absences
Please see the end of the newsletter on how to sign-up and start using the Safe Arrival App to register an
absence or late arrival at Boundary. Please make every effort to let the school know if your child is absent or
will be late. This is important information for us to ensure all students are accounted for each day.

School Plan
Our school plan is now online. Please take a look at the new format which clearly articulates our goals around
math learning, responsibility, diversity and Indigenous worldviews. The school plan can be viewed on the
Boundary website (https://bit.ly/31fq8NK).
Daily Health Check Reminder
Parents are required to assess their child(ren) for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to sending them to school for
the day. This is the same checklist that NVSD staff must also complete. Parents are required to sign /
acknowledge a one-time submission through School Cash Online. This form indicates a daily responsibility to
assessing your child(ren) before sending your them to school. You can find the screener on the School District’s
website (https://bit.ly/2FKU78R).

Stay Safe,

                                          Student Absence Reporting
Tuesday, April 13, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Ensuring students arrive safely at school each day is one of our top priorities.

This spring, École Boundary is one of six elementary schools at the North Vancouver School District piloting
SafeArrival, a student absence reporting system. SafeArrival, which is part of the SchoolMessenger platform, is
designed to enhance our existing absence-checking procedures by making it easier for you to report your child’s
absence (e.g. illness, vacation, appointment), reducing the time it takes school staff to verify student
attendance, and making it more efficient for staff to respond to unreported student absences.

With SafeArrival, you will be able to report your child’s absence in advance using any of these three options,
which are available to you 24 hours/day, 7 days a week:

   • SchoolMessenger app. Use your mobile device to download and install the SchoolMessenger app,
available at the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store or go.schoolmessenger.ca.
           • The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Important: Use an email
address that we have on record for you.
          • Select Attendance, then Report an Absence.
   • SchoolMessenger website. Use the SchoolMessenger website go.schoolmessenger.ca.
           • The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Important: Use an email
address that we have on record for you.
          • Select Attendance, then Report an Absence.
   • Automated phone system. Call the toll-free number 1-833-259-7295 and follow the prompts to report an
       absence.

Note: For absences longer than 3 days, please contact the school directly.

SafeArrival Resources

Video. Click HERE to watch a brief video that demonstrates how to report your child’s absence.

Guide. Click HERE to download a detailed Using the SchoolMessenger App for SafeArrival guide. The guide
explains how to sign up, log in, report and modify an absence and how to manage PIN settings.
SchoolMessenger Communicate

In addition to SafeArrival, we will pilot SchoolMessenger Communicate, an automated notification system, also
part of the SchoolMessenger platform, to contact you when your child is absent and the absence was not
reported in advance. The automated notification system will attempt to contact you at multiple contact points
until a reason for the absence is submitted. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts, school
staff will follow up.

The contact points for automated notification for unreported absences are:
   • Email/push notifications (SchoolMessenger app). Upon receipt of an email/push notification, you will
have five minutes to respond using SafeArrival (app, website or toll-free number).
   • SMS text message*. If five minutes pass with no response, a SMS text message will be sent. You will
have five minutes upon receipt of the SMS text message to respond using SafeArrival (app, website or
       toll-free number).
   • Phone call. If five minutes pass with no response, an automated phone call will be made. Automated
phone calls will be sent up to four times and you will be able to respond using SafeArrival (app, website
       or toll-free number).

Once the automated notification cycle above is complete, you will be unable to respond using SafeArrival, and
must contact the school directly regarding the unreported absence.

Please note:

   • If you report your child’s absence in advance using SafeArrival (app, website or toll-free number), you will
NOT receive automated notifications for an unreported absence.
   • You can determine the type(s) of notifications you would like to receive by setting your preferences using
       the app or website.
   • *You must opt in to receive SMS text message notifications (regardless of preference settings).
Instructions on how to opt in can be found HERE.
   • As an additional layer of security, you may choose to require a 4-digit PIN be entered before an absence
can be reported or explained when using the SafeArrival phone system. Refer to page 9 of the Using the
SchoolMessenger App for SafeArrival guide for more information.

Next Steps

Starting Monday April 19, 2021, absences should be reported in advance using SafeArrival instead of contacting
the school. School staff will being using SchoolMessenger Communicate to let you know if your child is absent
(when the absence hasn’t been reported in advance).

If you have children attending other elementary schools, please continue to report absences using the existing
procedures for those schools.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we implement this new system. Should you have any questions
or require assistance, please contact the school directly at 604-903-3260.

Sincerely,

Tim MacLeod
