A MESSAGE FROM ELIZABETH A. PADGETT Dear Langtree Charter Academy Community, I feel blessed and fortunate to lead our littlest lions again, returning to Langtree's Lower Campus as the Principal. I want to show the world what we do best at Langtree, meeting the needs of each of our students at their level, and creating opportunities for them to learn, grow and succeed anywhere, whether that is tuning in from inside their own homes or at some point back with us in their classrooms. Our building feels empty without the sounds of our students' laughter and the free hugs being given out each and every day as you walk down the halls. Our teachers are ready and eager to meet and establish strong and lasting relationships with our students, proactively engaging with and encouraging them to become more independent, life-long learners. In addition, modeling for them and giving them the tools necessary to become more responsible with the learning processes that work best for them. What a wonderful time to strengthen their 21st century skills, preparing them for what's yet to come and honing in on the support they will need to get better. We are here for our lions! This year marks my 30th year in education. There were times I had felt these past 30 years had flown by, and other times when I have felt the years were dragging on and on and would never end. But this year is definitely different. We are opening school with our students at home, who will be mobile learning. It’s new and different and it continues to be such a big change for our students and their families. There may be difficult days ahead as we navigate through this together and days when it will be smooth sailing for our students. We may or may not have all the answers, but our Langtree teachers will work hard to find the answers to the questions. More than ever before we will need the partnerships of our parents, grandparents, and caregivers, ensuring our students are “in-school”, at home. I’m looking forward to an unforgettable year! SCHOOL REOPENING SURVEY AND PRIORITIES At Langtree Charter Academy, we are committed to putting our students first, focusing on their academic and personal growth. That also means that their safety is our utmost priority, and that their families’ voices need to be heard and considered in everything we do. Our families entrust their children to us, along with all of our staff and teachers. That’s why we are equally focused on a safe environment for our Langtree Charter Academy team. We took all these factors into consideration before reopening. Reopening Priorities • Protecting the health and safety of students and employees • Compliance with government orders • Utilizing the guidelines of expert agencies that include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Pediatric Association, the local Health Department and other state and local agencies • Delivering high quality instruction to students regardless of the model of instruction • Providing effective use of school space to support social distancing as best viable • Setting clear expectations for everyone’s health, safety and learning • Listening to the needs of our families and meeting their needs to the best of our ability Parent Survey Results on School Reopening We surveyed our parents in order to determine which model best suits their child. As you can see below there were mixed responses on whether families were ready to send their children to schools, preferred a fully online/mobile experience, or a combination of both. WE INVITED ALL Fully Mobile Model 23% FAMILIES TO % BE SURVEYED Flexible In-Person & Mobile Model 77% % RETURN TO SCHOOL PLAN Langtree Charter Academy 2020-2021
OUR PLANS FOR A SAFE AND FLEXIBLE LEARNING EXPERIENCE Langtree Charter Academy, along with Charter Schools USA, has been following all the developments associated with of COVID-19. Charter Schools USA’s COVID-19 Committee meets several times per week in order to gather data and address the current guidelines of the CDC, the American Pediatric Association, state and local officials. Based on careful consideration and planning, it is our intent to welcome students back to our school for the first day of class on Langtree Charter Academy. We plan to do this by providing safe and flexible options so that parents can choose the best model for their child. IN-PERSON AT SCHOOL FULLY MOBILE COMBINATION OF BOTH Our families need to make a decision that is best for them and their children, and whether it’s full time in-person or mobile, or a combination of the two. We want to provide those choices to our families where feasible. For those families that must go to work, the in-person model is incredibly valuable, while others have a situation where family members are high-risk, and they may prefer a fully mobile option. Additionally, there’s scientific research supporting the need for our children to experience going to school and the socialization that comes with it. However, regardless of whether a student is at school or learning from home, our families should expect that their children experience the same high-quality education that they’ve always received. And if our schools and students are required to change the learning model because of changing health concerns, their academic growth should not be impacted. That’s why all our options are aligned academically so that every child has the same opportunity to experience academic growth this coming year.
