CORDOVA BAY 55 PLUS ASSOCIATION ISSUE NO. 71 SUMMER 2022 GROUP NEWS (Please note that not all groups provide an update in this newsletter, especially if they are not meeting at this time, due to Covid. For a complete listing of all CB55+ groups, please see our website.) Blue Heron Singers - has not been able to sing together for a very long time. We have missed the singing and the laughter, and we have missed each other mightily! In previous years, we stopped singing together in mid-June. At this time, we are not able to commit to when we will start to sing together again but we are all hoping it will be possible in the fall. If you are new to CB55+ and would like to learn of the choir's return to singing, please send an email to Marty (martylayne@gmail.com). If you don't have an email address, ask a friend if he or she will allow you to use their email address to receive messages for you. If you have sung with the Blue Heron Singers previously and are not sure if we have your contact information or if it has changed, please send an email to Gwen at gwenmacpherson@shaw.ca. Here's to Song! Golf Group - has had a cold, wet and windy start to our season. Of the six events to date, we have had one rain-out and one day where the wind had golf hats flying farther than some of our drives. Golfers are an optimistic bunch, however, and we look forward to much drier, calmer and warmer days for the rest of the season. If you have not yet joined us, we still have room for more players. Contact Marilyn Brack (250-479-8689) or Ted Dobie (250-477-5066). Dominoes - We have decided to play during the summer this year, so we will meet on Tuesday, July19 and Tuesday, August 16 in the Lounge, 1:00 - 3:30 pm. Any member is welcome to join us. Contact Rikki Bowman for more information at rikkij@shaw.ca or (250)382-6197. Ping Pong - We play every Thursday, 11:30 - 1:30 pm all year. We welcome new members to come anytime during that time period. We play doubles and take turns so everyone gets to play. We also have paddles and balls for all players. We have one table inside and one outside under a canopy during the warmer months, so members can choose where to play. For more info., contact Debra Sigurdson at debraslaptop@shaw.ca or Irene Dumka (irenedumka@shaw.ca). Bridge, Monday Drop-In - continues to welcome new members. We usually fill 2 and sometimes 3 tables. It is a friendly group of people who are keen to learn to play better bridge. We talk about the strategies and the rules to continue our learning, and are lucky to have a couple of experienced players who join us and help us with strategic advice. We would welcome more help if others are interested and we also have plenty of space for new drop-in players. For info., contact Hilary Goeller at hgoeller@outlook.com or Cathy Gustafson at cathygustafson86@gmail.com. Art Group - By the time this newsletter is published, the 2022 Art Show will be in the past, but right now our anticipation is palpable as we prepare to enchant and impress our audience with the work we have created in the past three years! Thank you to all of the membership in advance for supporting us and making this show and sale such a success! Over the summer, we will be continuing to meet both at the Centre and at various parks and beaches in the area on Monday afternoons from 1:00 - 3:30 pm. Artists wishing to join us should contact Jane Bishop (janebishop.is@gmail.com) or Donna Denman (donnaden@shaw.ca). GHOTH - (Men’s Group) is on the move again with our first trip since COVID to the Whitehall Boat Building Yard on Dallas Road on June 2 to be followed by lunch at the Bent Mast Pub. We are currently setting dates to visit the Sidney Rescue Base and the Naval Simulator in Esquimalt as well as other places of interest. Interested members in these and future trips should contact Dave Docherty at angdave@telus.net. We are also hosting the very popular annual CB55+ Summer BBQ on Aug. 16, so if any GHOTH member can help at this event, please let Dave know. CORDOVA BAY 55 PLUS ASSOCIATION ISSUE NO. 71 SUMMER 2022 GROUP NEWS CONTINUED On-the-Go-Again Group - After just over 2 years, OTGA celebrated a “reunion" on Friday, May 6. As one of our ladies said, “Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” It was SO GOOD to see so many again after what seemed like a much-too-long break. The chatter was a tonic! We plan to meet on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 pm until the end of June when we will take our summer break. On-the-Go-Again is a group of CB55+ members who function much better in a smaller group. Some have mobility problems and use a walker, some are hard of hearing, and some have impaired vision. We chat, discuss current events (and compare them to the “good old days”), play games, celebrate special occasions, invite speakers, and we all enjoy our cups of tea! Join us in the Big Room at 1:30 on Friday afternoons - all are welcome. For more info., contact Bobbi Johannessen (Bobbi.Johannessen@outlook.com) or Gwen MacPherson (gwenmacpherson@shaw.ca) Worth a Read Book Group - meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month, and at our meeting in May, we will have decided which books to read for the next few months. Members each put forward names of either newer, interesting reads or old favourites and we collectively choose from this list. We had thought-provoking and interesting discussions around our March book, The Rose Code, by Kate Quinn, and our April book, Truth be Told, by Beverley McLachlin. We are looking forward to our May book choice, The Paris Library, by Janet Skeslien Charles, which is focused on the American Library in Paris during the Second World War. In June, we will be reading A Quality of Light by Richard Wagamese. In this novel, Joshua Kane, an Ojibwe adopted at birth by a white farm couple, and Johnny Gebhardt, a white boy with a troubled past, become “blood brothers” in a boyhood ritual. When the boys become men, they get into serious trouble. To get on our waitlist for the book club, contact Sue Jergens, sjergens@hotmail.com or Jan Grewar, jangrewar@gmail.com. Happy Strummers - continue to meet weekly at 11:15 on Wednesdays in the Big Room to strum our ukuleles and sing. Even with a membership of over 30, we still fit in a circle and strum for an hour and a half. At the moment, our focus is on Canadian songs to perform at the annual Canada Day celebration at the end of June. Learning that the CB55+ will stay open through the summer is good news for those of us who just don’t want to stop! Contact Pat Carfra for more info., at plcarfra@shaw.ca or (250)479-9118. Walking Group - has 44 Walkers who meet at 9:30 every Friday, through all types of weather. A maximum of eight people in each of five walking groups choose online which walk they want to do. All walks are 60-90 minutes and take place in Greater Victoria, as far as the beginning of the Malahat. Each member leads a walk every month or so. We have coffee after the walks - either bringing our own beverage and sitting outdoors, or going to a coffee shop. Bob Greig is putting together a Power Point presentation to be shared at the Canada Day celebration that will showcase the variety of beautiful locations we have experienced. The flowers this year have been outstanding. During July and August, we will be reducing the number of walking choices to four, given that many members will be on holiday or golfing. We are also planning to manage the Corn Roast and Potluck luncheon in Centennial Park in Saanichton on September 6 and are looking for volunteers. If you can help, contact Peter Dutton (p.dutton@telus.net). If you would like more info., contact Pat Bancroft (patbancroft1946@gmail.com) or Judy Jeffrey (judith.jeffrey@gmail.com.) Digital Photography - continues with its routine of one photo shoot per month at indoor and outdoor spaces throughout Victoria. Members share their photos with the group at a Zoom session a couple of weeks later where we also discuss composition, editing and applications we have found useful. Members use a range of cameras from sophisticated SLRs to mobile phones. We will be meeting during June and July and then will reconvene in October. If you are interested in joining our group, please contact Diane Anderson at anderson.diane@me.com. Website: http://cordovabay55plus.org Page 4 Email: cb55@shawbiz.ca
CORDOVA BAY 55 PLUS ASSOCIATION ISSUE NO. 71 SUMMER 2022 GROUP NEWS CONTINUED Pickleball Group - continues to move from strength to strength, with conviviality, respect, good exercise, and healthy competition enjoyed by all. A total of 60 people have played since January, and the email list of interested members now stands at 90. Average attendance on Tuesdays (1:30 - 3:30 pm) at Saanich Commonwealth Place (SCP) is around 30, while, in spite of the cold weather, anywhere from 12 to 20 people play on Thursdays (1:30 - 3:30 pm) at McMinn Park. New members are always welcome. A new punch card system for attendance at SCP has been instituted to reduce administration time and it has received widespread support from the members. Punch cards can be purchased online or from the CB55+ office, in either 5 or 10 game denominations. Bob Greig has kindly volunteered to create a video of members enthusiastically pickleballing for the Canada Day Celebration. It is remarkable how one's play improves (or not!) when being filmed. Finally, to emphasize the pride each member of the group feels in belonging, a CB55+ pickleball T-shirt is being created. Brenda and Jim Hazelton, world renowned T-shirt designers (and respected members of our group) are in charge of the design. Expect to see the new T shirts on display soon! Contact John Arduini at jarduini@shaw.ca or (250)477-6692 for more info. Dog Walking Group - are enjoying walking every Friday morning at various parks in the Victoria area which are off-leash. If other members would like to join us, we have room at present. The dogs range in size and age from small to medium and 1-12 years. We have about 8 dogs that currently come, and if our group is large, we will divide into 2 groups. We walk for about 1 to 1-½ hours and then go for coffee. For more info., contact Christine Smith at (250)727-8544 or Fran Charles-Rens at (250)888-0948. Women’s Fitness - continues each week on Zoom; it runs on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8.45 until 9.45. Usually about 17 women attend from all over the peninsula as well as up-Island and one even in Vancouver. The only stipulation is that you must be a member of CB55+. The exercises are led by Viera Janco, who originally ran this group at the Centre. She is an excellent instructor and helps people individually if they require it after the class. The exercises are done to music, and she covers every muscle group using stretches, bands, ball, and weights. It is not highly intensive but certainly gives you a good workout if you listen carefully to what she is asking the class to do. Contact Christine Smith at chrismith3@shaw.ca for more information. Studio Group - have had a busy Spring making ‘twiddle muffs’ for people who benefit from tactile stimulation, articles for sale to support the Ukranian troops and refugees, and hats for people who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. All items were welcomed and the happy recipient of several hats kindly passed on an enthusiastic thank-you to the ladies who knitted and delivered twenty-one hats to her to choose from. Knowing that our work is appreciated keeps us going. We have also spent plenty of time chatting over a cuppa and treats and look forward to new projects in the future. The Studio Group will not meet over the summer but will resume again in September. We wish everyone a happy summer! Contact Viv Smith at sierra4618@gmail.com. Hot Shots - will finish their Spring session on July 4, with a full complement of 14 shooters. We will be starting the Fall session on Sept.19 - Nov. 28. Hot Shots provides a safe and fun venue for Air Pistol target shooting. We meet on Monday mornings, 10:00 - 11:00 am in the basement of the Cordova Bay Community Centre, 941 Sutcliffe Road, followed by coffee and goodies at the Centre. The cost consists of a $20.00 sign-up fee (payable on-line for 10 sessions) with an additional $3.00 per session to cover the cost of targets and pellets. Pistols are provided. Adhering to the CB55+ Covid-19 policy, participants are required to be double-vaccinated and wear face masks. Contact Lorne Brack (250)479-8689 or lorne.brack@icloud.com) or the CB55+ Office for more information. Website: http://cordovabay55plus.org Page 5 Email: cb55@shawbiz.ca

CORDOVA BAY 55 PLUS ASSOCIATION ISSUE NO. 71 SUMMER 2022 OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEERS - Retiring CB55+ Board Directors – 2022 AGM This year, six of our Directors have stepped down from their role on the Board, and each played a unique role in guiding CB55+’s direction over their tenure. We appreciate the wealth of experience each one had brought to their position and the commitment of their valuable time to the Board and other activities at CB55+. Their enthusiasm for CB55+ shone through at every meeting! We sincerely thank all of the retiring CB55+ Board Directors for their contributions to our organization. Jim Rondeau While Jim was only able to spend a year on the board due to the continuing demands of his business, we thank him for his contributions while on the Board. Jim brought us new solutions on how to deal with government institutions and introduced innovative ideas for us to consider at our Strategic Planning Session. Thanks Jim, it was a pleasure to have you on the CB55+ Board! Patricia Houston Patricia brought her passion for positive change to her role on the Board these past four years. The many Intergenerational Programs made great strides under her energetic leadership. Patricia was the mastermind behind the Trusted Trades program, initially working with others to establish the parameters of the program, and then carrying it forward with great zeal to ensure its success by both researching suitable trades and promoting the program at CB55+. She encouraged the Board to take on new endeavours, including the Santa for Seniors project that brought both the givers (CB55+ members) and the receivers (needy seniors) great joy. Thank you for your many contributions to CB55+, Patricia! Phyllis Senese We are very grateful to Phyllis for stepping up last year to fill a vacant spot on the Board. She brought her valuable knowledge as a historian to many discussions, including how CB55+ should recognize First Nations reconciliation. Phyllis’ kind and thoughtful approach to recognizing contributions of individual CB55+ members taught us new ways to say Thank You. Thank you for the gift of your presence on the board, Phyllis! Shannon Baylis It has been a delight to work with Shannon on the Board of Directors the past couple of years. She has brought her considerable energy into her roles as Kitchen Liaison and Volunteer Liaison. As Volunteer Liaison, Shannon has acted as our Human Resources officer and made the initial contact with any new member who has expressed an interest in volunteering. She has also managed the publication and (Con’t pg.10) Website: http://cordovabay55plus.org Page 9 Email: cb55@shawbiz.ca
CORDOVA BAY 55 PLUS ASSOCIATION ISSUE NO. 71 SUMMER 2022 OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEERS - follow-up of CB55+’s requests for volunteer assistance in our many service areas. Shannon is a familiar face at our Tuesday Drop-Ins where she drums up business for the kitchen by broadcasting the week’s Wednesday Lunch feature. We miss your cheerful demeanor at our Board meetings, Shannon. Thank you for your continued hard work! Velma Minckler What can we say about Velma? She has made countless contributions to CB55+ over the years, as both Office Manager and Membership Coordinator. Velma has been very thoughtful in bringing her considerable professional experience to CB55+’s systems and processes and she has been a strong mentor to many of us. She worked continuously with Von for the past couple of years to convert CB55+’s manual membership system over to the new Membee system, and to ensure our new system was running effectively before handing the reins to Von. Thank you so much, Velma, you are a bright star! Von Bishop Von has been a wonderful asset to the Board and to CB55+ these past 6 ½ years. A leader in many areas of our operations, Von’s recent focus on Membee, our new membership platform, has given us the ability to bring in an electronic payment system to ultimately streamline our office and financial systems. He is currently working with Andrea Lindsay to bring an electronic terminal to facilitate credit and debit card purchases in the office. Von will continue to act as Membership Coordinator. Von’s calm and measured approach has been greatly appreciated at our Board of Directors meetings. Thank you so much for all your contributions to CB55+, Von! NOTES OF THANKS … to all the CB55+ members who so generously contributed their Thrifty Food points to the Art Group. Several sets of culinary pots were donated to needy families through the Native Friendship Centre as well as the Bishop Cridge Centre for the Family. Together, we made our world a little kinder and we thank you! The Board of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre also wishes to express much gratitude to the talented and generous Studio Group for their donations of hand-made items that were then sold, with the funds going into the Ukrainian Foundations for Displaced Citizens of Ukraine.
