March 9, 2021 Greenland Sharks may hold the secret to the Fountain of Youth Pop Quiz! Q: What is the longest-living vertebrate known to man? A: Greenland sharks which were found in the Atlantic Ocean. They may live as long as 400 years! Humans are always on the lookout for something that promises eternal life. OK, if not eternal, then at least a longer life. There’s so much to see and do! So researchers have taken clippings from the fins of these sharks and are analyzing their DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) to see what it is in their genetic code that gives them this gift. DNA is a bunch of building blocks that code human beings. The sequence in which these blocks are joined together determines a lot about us – how we look, what colour hair and eyes we have, if we have dry or wet ear wax, and so on. So it definitely can determine how long we live. If we can find out the secret code in the DNA of the sharks from Greenland – the secret code that helps them to live longer, the hope is that maybe we Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. March 9, 2021 can build that into our codes too! What is DNA? Photo Credit: Medivizor DNA is an acronym for deoxyribonucleic acid. This is the code that every cell in your body has the exact same copy of. This code is what you get from your parents and they from theirs, and so on. This genetic code decides the way you look and some of your talents, likes and dislikes. Computer code is a series of 1s and 0s. Genetic code is a sequence of chemical bases A, C, G, and T. These letters are short for Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, and Thymine. These bases pair up (A with T, G with C) and then make a sequence that is 3 billion base pairs long! Here’s the interesting part: 99% of the code is the same in all human beings. WHAT???? We are all so different from each other! That’s right but our differences all come from that 1%! What is a chromosome? A chromosome is a collection of genes in the human body. Each human has 23 pairs of Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. All rights reserved. March 9, 2021 What is an ice shelf? An ice shelf is a floating piece of ice that is anchored to land. What really happened? A crack more than 120 miles long had developed in Larsen C over the last several years. On Wednesday this week, scientists said that a giant block of the ice shelf had finally broken free to create one of the largest icebergs ever recorded. This is a big change and the physical map of Antarctica will need to be redrawn. How do they know the iceberg broke off? It is now winter in Antarctica. This means it is too dark to get pictures of the iceberg from the ground. However, photos from space show that it has indeed finally broken off from the ice shelf. What is the effect of this iceberg breaking off? The iceberg which is likely to be named A68, will not affect sea levels immediately. That’s because it was already floating on the ocean. However, ice shelves protect glaciers from floating out to sea. If too many ice shelves break off, glaciers can flow into the ocean and melt. That would cause sea levels to rise. Fantastic Facts: Wimbledon 2017 Wimbledon 2017 is upon us! The finals are this weekend. Some giants have fallen (Oh no! Not Nadal, Djokovich AND Murray!!!) while others look increasingly confident (Venus Williams is in fantastic form!). While all eyes will be on Centre Court this weekend for the Women’s Finals on Saturday and the Men’s Finals on Sunday, take a look at our gallery for some interesting Wimbledon factoids. March 9, 2021 After several hours of interviews and superb presentations from candidates, they named former skipper and popular commentator Ravi Shastri as the new head coach. The committee has also selected Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid as consultants. They will assist with bowling and overseas batting respectively. Team India is gearing up for the upcoming Sri Lankan tour this month. Let’s go to Paris in 2024! Photo Credit: Reuters The cities of Paris and Los Angeles (LA) were vying to host the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The International Olympic Committee decided to award 2024 to Paris and 2028 to Los Angeles. Fun Facts: The last time Paris hosted the Olympic games was 100 years ago, in 1924! March 9, 2021 Paris and LA will both use facilities that are already existing. Of course they will add to them and make some changes, but they will not have to make everything completely from scratch and then let it go to waste. Re-using is awesome! Paris was so keen to host the Summer Olympics in 2024 that athletes showcased the city by performing fantastic stunts in and around major structural and natural wonders there on June 23 and 24 this year. This included a diver jumping off a bridge into the river Seine, athletes sprinting on floating barges on the river, and trampoline artists performing inside the Petit Palais (an art museum) among other terrific stunts as the city pretended to be a gigantic Olympic Park! Coldplay drops a new single “ALIENS” Coldplay has dropped a new single “ALIENS” from their new project “Kaleidoscope.” They have released an animated lyric video which is pretty cool. This upbeat track has some electronic sounds, heavy guitar and dramatic strings and Chris Martin’s distinctive vocals. The lyrics speak of aliens, far away from home, that “…just wants to get home again.” He is singing about how difficult it is for people to have to flee their homes and live as refugees in foreign lands. At the end of the video it is noted that all proceeds from the song will go to the Migrant Offshore Aid Station, an organisation that rescues migrants and refugees from the Mediterranean. March 9, 2021 New code helps robots read body language! Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in America have developed a computer code that can help robots to understand human body language! You know how sometimes you say something but mean something else? Like if you slept at midnight, but are trying to fool your mum or dad that you slept earlier, you might say “Oh! I was in bed at 9 pm!” but your body language might give you away, if you smiled a little smile or winked at your younger sister. Computers currently cannot read body language so they wouldn’t be able to catch your smile and your wink and tell you were fibbing. They would take you at your word and record that you slept at 9 pm. But your parent would definitely be able to catch you out! The researchers at Carnegie Mellon have used a recording studio called the Panoptic Dome, fitted out with 500 cameras, to record human movement and turn it into 2 dimensional images – video. The code then uses this information available from multiple people and tells the computer how to read small and large movements. It can apparently even break it down to the movement of each finger and movements of the mouth. Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. All rights reserved. March 9, 2021 They say that they are hopeful that once this code is effectively developed, they can use it to help self-driving cars better predict what pedestrians are going to do next and improve their accuracy at avoiding them. We are sure there will be many, many more uses. The researchers have given the software to different research groups who can develop it further. Juno’s Journey to Jupiter Q: Guess what the fastest object made by man is? A; The Juno spacecraft that is currently peeking into the goings-ons on the planet Jupiter. It travelled at the extreme speed of 160,000 miles per hour for 5 years to cover a distance of 2.8 BILLION kilometres from the Earth to reach its destination! Juno reached Jupiter one year ago, on July 4, 2016. There have been other missions to investigate Jupiter but this is humankind’s second spacecraft to enter Jupiter’s orbit, which is very difficult to do. The first mission was from 1995-2003, and was carried out by a spacecraft called Galileo. Juno’s objective is to gather information about the formation, surface, and extreme magnetic core of Jupiter. It will orbit around the planet 37 times over a period of 20 months, gathering and transmitting information about this planet to scientists on earth. You might wonder where it gets the fuel to keep going for such a large distance over such a long period of time – Juno is fitted out with solar arrays to help with this. March 9, 2021 Why do we care so much about Jupiter? Understanding more about our solar system’s largest planet will help to our understanding more about the formation of planets and how space works. Of course any real mission is not completely without danger. Juno had to first be able to enter Jupiter’s orbit and withstand the extreme radiation that it was slammed with. Jupiter has a very strong magnetic field and spins very fast on its axis. As such, it generates a field of radiation that is more devastating than that on anything in our solar system, apart from the sun. This level of radiation can destroy the functioning of the spacecraft. The team building the ship and the scientists working on this project have had to brainstorm and come up with various innovative designs to withstand the radiation. They have also designed a path around Jupiter that minimises the radiation that it will encounter. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) recently shared some findings from Juno that suggest that there are huge cyclones raging at its North and South poles. I wonder what else Juno will share with us! Check this video out… Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. All rights reserved.
