A MESSAGE FROM SARAH FRANCO OUR CEO To my JAFCO family, In true JAFCO style, even a global pandemic could not deter our incredible donors from their dedication to our children and families. Working together with love this past year, we were able to serve 3,080 children in all of our lifesaving programs which are all fully open and operating live and in-person. We are grateful to our amazing frontline professional staff and we did not suffer a single pandemic-related program closing or staff layoff. In effect, the only thing that truly changed at JAFCO during this challenging year, is our increased level of gratitude for the health and safety of our extended JAFCO family which includes our children, our families, our volunteers and our donors. We have realized more than ever before, that we are truly better together. There were precious babies and children who moved from dangerous conditions to their loving foster and adoptive families. We celebrated high school graduations of the children living at the Children’s Village, as well as a momentous UF graduation and a Wharton MBA graduation for one of our esteemed alumni who is now a member of our JAFCO Children’s Foundation Board of Trustees and our Alumni Circle a group to keep our alumni in contact, helping their peers who might be struggling, because we are better together. At the Children’s Village, we quickly transitioned to home schooling for over two dozen children ranging from kindergarten to college, and we had more children who made honor roll than ever before! To strengthen their immunity the children grew their own organic vegetables and participated in daily workout routines in addition to wellness and mindfulness activities such as meditation and drumming. Our weekly Shabbat dinners continued to provide spiritual support to the children and our 2020 Passover table for 40 children was likely the largest live seder that took place in the world. This past Jewish New Year while all shuls remained closed due to COVID-19, our (Noni and Alan Aufzien) Children’s Sanctuary was open allowing our children to start the year off with hope as they listened to the blast of the shofar and participated in our traditional JAFCO-created Torah-passing ceremony where each child has their own moment to hold and kiss the Torah before carefully passing it on to a friend – all with a huge smile on their faces. Every year during this special ceremony, there are tears of joy as I am reminded that as a Jewish community, we are better together. Our JAFCO clinical social work staff both in Florida and Pennsylvania never stopped supporting and reaching out to keep families strong and together. Our social workers risked their own health on the frontline, sending our communities a clear message that we are better together. When 100% of summer camps closed for the summer, we were concerned about how we could ensure safety from the pandemic but we also worried about how our Ability Center families would manage with three more months at home with their children without a break. In one moment, the right thing to do became abundantly clear after our community suffered the tragic drowning of Alejandro Ripley, a 9-year old child with autism, by his own mother who was so stressed. Hearing this JAFCO responded immediately and the next day we were one of the only open on-site summer camp and respite programs in the entire South Florida community, because working alongside our families, we are always better together. At Eagles’ Haven we held a three year commemoration of the 2/14 MSD school shooting tragedy with a full-day in-person outdoor wellness event. With the release of 17 beautiful doves, our community stood together as one, with tears in their eyes and love in their hearts for those we lost and for the families who are grieving each and every day. Especially during difficult times, we are better together. JAFCO is fully open and will transition to in-person live fundraising events and tours starting in the summer. The need for JAFCO and our lifesaving mission became crystal clear during the pandemic and we thank all of you for the love and support you have shown us this past year. We could not have done it alone, and we emerge from this experience stronger Alone we can and certain that we are better together. do so little; together we can do so much. We have also watched how JAFCO has expanded beyond their initial foster care and adoption mission to include family preservation as well as children with developmental disabilities and now addresses the trauma that comes with mass shootings at their Eagles’ Haven site. We are so proud that our community has supported this organization that truly responds to the needs of families in a way that other agencies cannot.” Rabbi Amy Rader — Boca Raton, FL 5

BETTER TOGETHER Supporting Grandparents Who Are Parenting Again The JAFCO Senior Caregiver and Kinship Care programs were created due to the nearly 3 million children in the United States who are being raised by grandparents and who are much more likely to have experienced traumatic events that will influence their development. For example, research has found that children in grandparent-led households are six times more likely to have had a parent or guardian serve time in jail, and four times more likely to have lived with someone who has a drug or alcohol problem or observed physical violence between parents or adults, and twice as common living with someone who was mentally ill, suicidal or severely depressed. Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, comedians Carol Burnett and Jamie Foxx, and musicians Eric Clapton and Willie Nelson were all raised by their grandparents. By supporting the grandparents, these children can grow up to lead a happy and successful life, like Leah who is being raised by her grandmother Elaine. Elaine, a dedicated grandmother, was desperate for help when she came to JAFCO in need of support. It felt like her entire family was falling apart as she struggled at the age of 78 to become a full-time single parent to her 8-year-old granddaughter Leah. Leah’s mother had suffered from serious substance abuse and mental health struggles since she was a teenager despite dozens of treatment centers and attempts to help her. Elaine felt ashamed to come to ask for help but things were so out of control, she wasn’t sure how she would get through even one more day with her daughter’s mental illness and substance abuse putting the family at risk. There were strangers coming to the home looking for her daughter and threatening to harm the entire family if they were not paid the money she owed them. Elaine feared for her life as she tried to protect her precious granddaughter. It was just the two of them as Elaine’s husband had just passed away the previous year. On the same day that Elaine called for help, JAFCO stepped in immediately. It was deemed necessary that the mother could no longer safely come to the home and JAFCO ensured that a legal restraining order was put in place by the courts. However supervised visitation was ordered and JAFCO clinicians provided supervised visitation between Leah and her mother for three years. Leah remained in her grandmother’s care where she received structure and consistency along with every possible support from JAFCO to ensure her needs were met. During this time, the mother’s mental health and substance abuse became increasingly concerning and visitations were eventually suspended. Ultimately the mother sadly overdosed and died. Leah was devastated, as she loved her mother regardless of what she had she experienced in her care. After helping grandma with the funeral and shiva, JAFCO immediately connected Leah to grief counseling, equine therapy and continued to check in nearly every day. Leah is now happy and doing well. She is in the gifted program at school, loves to dance and do karate. JAFCO sends Leah to overnight camp to give grandma a long two month break and the two of them are doing great. She also gets help from extended family whom JAFCO contacted in order to provide much needed support to this incredible duo. We were so happy to be there to help when everything fell apart and it has been our honor to nurture the incredible bond they share. We received this beautiful letter of gratitude... To my JAFCO family, I’m living and working in Tallahassee for the FDEM and I must say, I picked a fairly relevant major in college. During the first 6 months I’ve been working, I was initially deployed after Hurricane Sally devastated part of Panama City. Then ironically, they deployed me to help with vaccinations in Broward County where I grew up. The best part of that assignment was that I got to go to JAFCO nearly every day where they had lunch waiting for me! It felt so good to finally be able to give back to JAFCO, for all you have done for me and my siblings, by getting some of the donors and staff hooked up with a vaccine while I was working at one of the parks that week. I genuinely just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. This has been such a surreal journey and you all have gone so above and beyond anything that I ever could have imagined. I am so grateful for you and don't know how to thank all of you enough for the continuous support and most importantly love. I would not be here without all of you and I will never forget that. I love you guys! Love, Austin Steven Honestly, today really has to be one of the my great life of opportunity, happiness, and love that I was so lucky to have received from everyone that is part of JAFCO, happiest moments of my life. However, at the onset of the pandemic, both he and his wife were unable to maintain their employment. Our team quickly assisted the family with applying for rental assistance programs through the City of Philadelphia and connected them with utility assistance programs. The family was approved by the area electric/gas company to pay off past due bills in manageable installments and was selected to receive $7,500 in rental assistance, allowing them to stay on track with their current rent payment plan. After being unemployed for several months, both parents have now secured employment! The father is now employed as a teacher with the School District of Philadelphia. The family immediately reached out to JAFCO FamilyMatters to convey this wonderful news. 17
