bp.calendar.21/22_Layout 1 8/9/21 4:24 PM Page 4 The Bethel Park School District: A Year to Remember The 2020-2021 school year began in very much the same way as how the 2019-2020 school year What we saw was that even as we were forced to physically distance ourselves in ways that may ended. For safety reasons, students and staff continued to be marooned at home as the global have previously seemed unimaginable, in many ways the community drew closer together than pandemic washed over the entire world in a series of deadly waves that at times felt like they would ever before. never relent. Over time, however, some remarkable things began to happen during what had otherwise been a very dark and forgettable period. We accept that even though most of our staff and many of our families have been vaccinated, the pandemic-related challenges are not yet in our rearview mirror. It could take years to fully digest School systems developed ways for students to learn from home and teachers and students the impact the pandemic has had on our families educationally, emotionally and even physically. developed methods to take advantage of those opportunities. It was not the same as in-person We also understand that we are forever changed by the experiences of the past 18 months and instruction, nothing can replace the magic that happens inside a classroom. Still, it was better than it many things will never be like they were prior to the pandemic. had been the spring prior. Still, if the events of the past year-and-a-half have taught us nothing else it is that no matter what Schools also developed safety procedures based on the ever-shifting guidance they were receiving challenges come our way, the Bethel Park School District community will find a way to adapt and from local, state and federal officials and once foreign terms like “social distancing,” “community overcome them. We thank you for your incredible efforts during the 2020-2021 school year and spread,” and “flattening the curve,” became a part of our everyday vernacular. More importantly, at we hope that you will join us in helping to make the 2021-2022 school year A Year to Remember! Bethel Park, our families faithfully heeded the guidance they were receiving which allowed our school district to have better outcomes than many of our neighboring communities. That allowed us to return to four days per week of in-person instruction by the spring and has us on track to resume a full five-day in-person instructional week when we return in August. A group of Bethel Park High School students – sophomore, Martina Tatalias; and seniors, Tanush Bahl, Ethan Donovan, Johny Ivanov, Christian McClaine, Demetrios Patrinos, Toby Roule and Evan Zelt — used Google Data Studio, including Google Docs and Google Sheets, to create the district’s comprehensive online COVID-19 dashboard. The project, which is believed to be the only high school student-designed venture of its kind in the entire country, allowed the community to track transmission rates at the various district schools as well as on a districtwide basis; and measured trends to see how Bethel Park’s transmission rates compared with county and state figures. Teachers also adjusted, finding a series of exciting new ways to engage their students through multi- media presentations. One such example was Franklin Elementary first grade teacher, Mrs. Peggy Ann Clancy’s YouTube geography series, “Where in the World is Mrs. Clancy?” The Morrow family of Logan Road used their time in quarantine to walk together for a cause and eventually raised enough money to buy dozens of books for the elementary school libraries that emphasized lessons on diversity. The Old Navy at South Hills Village donated hundreds of masks to the elementary schools and high school student, Makayla Yee developed COVID-19 care packages for her teachers to help keep them healthy and safe.
