M C L AUGH LIN S U I T S U P P LY T IFFAN Y & C O. TORY BURCH WA R BY PARKER A volunteer with Mosaics of Mercy for the past two years, Sherry Reuser was introduced to this organization when she attended a Nar-Anon meeting at The Woodlands United Methodist Church in 2017. Another member of the Nar-Anon group was a co-founder of Mosaics and invited her to attend a mosaic making workshop. shopatmarketstreet.com 16 Behind the Gates • February 2020 February 2020 • Behind the Gates 17
Sherry comments that the Nar-Anon group was not a club she ever wanted to be in … a support group for those with adult children who have addiction issues. But, this group and the introduction to Mosaics of Mercy did help Sherry and her family as she learned that everyone was going through the same struggles, chaos and had the same stories. “Nar-Anon encourages us to surrender our children to whatever God’s will is,” Sherry says. “It certainly is not an easy thing to do and it’s an incremental process that takes time.” At a Mosaics workshop, Sherry was able to create a mosaic heart of broken tile and glass pieces at a session hosted by MM. Sherry proudly displays her heart creation in her home as a reminder of how her family can respond and support those struggling with their mental well-being. So many people in our community are struggling, whether it be from a situational mental health issue, death, grief, some type of addiction, bullying or the stress of life. Sherry learned during the workshop that Mosaics is a family navigator that connects people to community resources that are a fit for them. She also met Sherry Burkhard, co-founder and executive director of Mosaics and a registered nurse with a personal and professional background in mental health. As a hub, Mosaics consistently provides hope, education, confidential referrals, and resource connections between area doctors, hospitals, schools, churches, and local residents. At this event that will be held at The Reuser’s home, guests will be able to create their own mosaic during a mini-work- shop and learn more about this resource-rich community support organization. They’ll also hear more from Sherry Burkhard on how Mosaics is specifically educating the com- munity about available mental health-related resources. One of the first families to move into Carlton Woods (Mem- ber #298), the Reuser family has lived here for more than 14 years. Sherry’s husband is an avid golfer and loves the cours- es here. They have been married for 36 years and have three children, two daughters and a son, and three dogs. Both daughters are schoolteachers and their son lives in Houston. Sherry is a retired schoolteacher who taught U.S. History to eighth-graders at McCullough High School for 14 years. She retired three years ago. They also have 4 grandchildren, a 9-year-old from their el- dest daughter and three children from their younger daugh- ter, with two in college and one in high school. They have two rescue dogs, one who looks like a Chihuahua and one who is a year and a half Retriever. They bought their third dog online, a Shih Tzu. Our pet of the month is a cute cat with a royal name. Louis shares his name with French Kings like Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI, even though I’m not sure he was named after them. Louis was born on May 1, 2018. Cath- erin Kaufman, daughter of resident Christen Kaufman found Louis at the Montgomery Animal Shelter in June of 2018 when she went with her mother, resident Christen Kaufman, to find a cat to adopt. The moment they saw Louis at the shelter, Catherin knew he was the one and she says they instantly fell in love with each other. Catherin says “I went to start the adoption process and the shelter told me I could not officially adopt him because he was too Louis little”. Catherin adds “kittens have to be at least two pounds at the shelter in order to be adopted. They told me if I wanted to adopt him I would have to foster him and his brother and sister for a few months until they were two pounds. I was upset think- ing my parents would never agree to foster three newborn kittens because it was a lot of work and my mom is very allergic to cats.” the cat To Catherin’s surprise, her mother ap- proved right away: “Yes, of course, we’ll take them!” because she knew how much Louis and her daughter already loved each other. And that is how the Kaufman family precious pets ended up spending the next three months fostering three newborn kittens! The By Resident Junior Writer, Kaufmans found this experience amazing as Bernie Varela the say the kittens were so playful and cute. Once the kittens reached two pounds each, they were brought back to the shelter and they officially adopted Louis. Louis is a Siamese mix cat, therefore he has the coloring, bright blue eyes, and personality of a Siamese cat. Because he is a Siamese cat he is hypoallergenic and it does not bother Catherin’s mother who is allergic to cats or any of her friends who are also allergic. Catherin says “I am Louis’ favorite in the family because he spends every day with me.” His personality is loving, cuddly, talkative, and energetic. He loves to talk all the time (which is common for Siamese cats) and Louis always keeps Catherin company. His next favorite would be Catherin’s father because he babysits him when she is gone and gives him treats like his favorite tuna. 34 Behind the Gates • February 2020 February 2020 • Behind the Gates 35
Because Louis is Siamese, he is extremely cross-eyed. Catherin thinks it is the cutest thing about him and it’s always a little funny to see how he handles it when playing with toys. He is a completely 24/7 indoor cat. Louis is not allowed outside and hates the outside, he is comfortable staying inside where he is safe and can play and cuddle. One of Louis’ favorite things is drinking from 936.321.Pool (7665) the sink, he LOVES it! He has fresh water ev- ery day but when he hears the sink turn on he races over, jumps up and enjoys drinking from Weekly Services & Maintenance for the running water. Chlorine & Saltwater Pools I think we can all agree that Louis must be a very fun cat to live with!
