The heat of the sun is gently lessening, so we’ve made sure you can stock up on cultural fuel to keep your mind ablaze. The season starts with an incendiary double bill. Limited to over 16s, we question attitudes to the female orgasm and white privilege in Bedales’ open and honest way. This year’s visiting poet, Julia Copus, will then also be going beyond the conventional: you will still hear her written works but also a piece commissioned for radio. Through the eyes of Nick Cassenbaum’s childhood adoration, you can get to know nation’s ex-favourite Michael Barrymore again, without the overblown vilification of his downfall. Peeling then explores accessibility and unfairly marginalised stories. Our second double bill (why do things by halves?) maintains the clarity of the first. Royal Court writer, Chris Thorpe’s Status takes a cold, rough look at the current state of play in Status. Signals then gives us a lighter look at the search for intelligent life elsewhere in an intense and witty two hander. Beowulf has a set up as raw as the original telling – taking audience suggestions, Seth Kriebel tells this ancient tale, with modern guidance. Jo Berry and Patrick Magee then share what it is to forgive, after the atrocities committed in the name of religion and nationhood. And as we count down the days to Christmas, we have Matt Parker delight us with numerical comedy. And if all that culture isn’t enough to keep you toasty, then there’s all our home grown work too – forged right here at Bedales and to which you are always very welcome. TA LK Global Awareness Lecture Jo Berry and Dr. Patrick Magee Dr Patrick Magee was released from prison in 1999 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. For 27 years he was a committed member of the IRA. Jo Berry lost her father, Sir Anthony Berry in the Brighton Bomb and made a decision two days later to bring something positive out of the violence and understand the ‘enemy’. In November 2000 Pat agreed to meet Jo. The first meeting was three hours and led to them working together to promote dialogue and peace. Jo founded the charity Building Bridges for Peace, and advocates that empathy is the biggest weapon we have to end conflict.
