FASHION World whatsOn 8 .guide GOING GLOBAL We are in the midst of a global crisis, with a virus spreading rapidly across the world. Sadly a barrage of misinformation is also spreading as virulently, and it is even resulting in racist attacks - shame on us! Just 16, with nowhere to sleep tonight Who would choose to sleep rough in winter? Shockingly, many young teenagers – like Grace – have no choice. Grace left home at 16 to escape her stepfather. But after losing her job, she couldn’t afford her rented room, and found herself homeless. She spent six freezing weeks sleeping in an abandoned car – until the bitter cold took its toll and she fell seriously ill. Thankfully, once she left hospital, YMCA provided Grace with a room, and support from us to build a more stable future. If we hadn’t been there, who knows what might have happened. But since 2010 there has been an 165% rise in the number of people rough sleeping in the UK, and as temperatures drop, the dangers increase. So please will you help provide someone like Grace with a safe, warm room at a YMCA? Become a Roomsponsor today for just £12 a month – or give whatever you can now. Thank you. These life events are the real experiences of young people in our care. Grace is represented by a model. Task Brasil started running residential care for street children and young people in 1998 after receiving a very generous donation from Jimmy Page, the Led Zeppelin rock icon, who witnessed first hand the deprivation of the children and troubles in the favelas whilst playing in Rio de Janeiro. The money donated was used towards buying a house on a plot of land in Santa Teresa, a district of Rio de Janeiro. ʻCasa Jimmyʼ has provided a safe and happy home for 500 young children and pregnant teenage girls who were either living on the streets, or leading lives of great deprivation and vulnerability. In addition to Casa Jimmy, over the years, Task Brasil has run a number of houses for Street Children, teenage boys, teenage girls and their babies. Task Brasil now operates socio-educational programmes for the disadvantaged or at risk youth in Rio as well as supporting the needs of ex-residents so that they have the opportunity to thrive in life and are able to live in harmony with their family and community away from the streets. Poverty is Not Natural George Curtis £9.95 paperback “Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man- made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings” Nelson Mandela Why is it that those who produce the wealth, the workers, re- ceive only a small portion of what they have produced? What is the privilege that grants some a lion’s share of the product without having to work for it? This book traces the cause of poverty to a widely accepted social institution and reveals a way in which this defect could be remedied by introducing a more efficient way of funding government.
