On 16 November 2017 a “Town Hall” meeting was held to update members of significant Squadron activities. Members who attended were updated on the Squadron’s Master Plan, Marina and Sports Amenities Building, and the Manly Summer of Sail. The next “Town Hall” will be held in late June 2018. The General Manager and I attended the bi annual Marine 17 Conference in Sydney, in late 2017. The conference focus was on Marinas, their infrastructure, and management around the world. The message we took away from the conference was that our RQYS marinas are already doing much of what was discussed but there were areas where we could fine tune our marina operations. I have met socially with the Presidents of the Brisbane, Queensland, United Services, and Tattersalls Clubs, from these gatherings it was clear that our clubs faced similar but individually unique challenges. Notwithstanding there are opportunities for complimentary interaction between our clubs that would not compete with our individual core membership or business. Collecting, preserving and recording the Squadron’s history is the passion of numerous club members. I would like to recognise the efforts of Chris Tyquin, his contribution was showcased with the launch of a memoir of Squadron 4 Mainsheet Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Autumn 2018

Planning for the 2018 Etchells Worlds is well under way and the Brisbane Fleet Championships in April provided an ideal opportunity to check launching and berthing plans. Our on water volunteers provided a great event and continued to refine their skills on the Eastern Course. A reminder to all members that October 2018 will be Etchells Central at the Squadron with the arrival of overseas and interstate boats and lead up events. Wherever possible inconvenience to members will be minimised. In June the General Committee will conduct a Strategic Planning Session where we will review the current Strategic Plan and confirm and refine future short, medium and long term Squadron goals and objectives. Please contact Reception if you would like a copy of the current Strategic Plan. As we head into Winter the tempo of activities slows a little but there is always something on at the Squadron, I encourage all members to participate in what the Squadron has to offer. General Manager’s Update from General Manager Shawn Ket The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron has enjoyed another successful year in 2017/2018, with consistent growth in our membership and a positive trend of members transferring to on-water and/ or full member categories. Our business units have again demonstrated their specialist knowledge and operational capability to exceed last year’s professional bests in membership, sailing and cruising, sailing academy, marina and members services. Our membership constituency continues to grow, and more importantly, continues to become more engaged in the Squadron’s core purpose: boating. On-water member categories have experienced solid growth over the past 3 years, with best-ever growth experienced in the last 24 months. Our social members are progressively opting to transition into on-water participatory membership categories (including crew and full), and crew members are choosing to adopt full membership. We also have a growing number of new crew members joining the Squadron to take advantage of our various on-water initiatives. This is a great acknowledgment of RQYS as an industry leader in providing a strong membership value proposition, comprehensive learn to sail programs and diverse sailing pathways.
The RQYS Sailing Academy has also enjoyed consistent Our Come Sail Our Boats membership package, the growth in enrolments as well as a diversification of program Squadron’s flagship accessibility initiative, has developed offerings in the past year. The development of our core into a consolidated program over the past 24 months. 74 on-water courses for kids and adults, the introduction members have taken advantage of this package so far, of combination on-shore and on-water programs like some of which have moved onto their own vessels or Adventure Sailing, and the hosting of greater community other membership, and 58 of which are currently learning initiatives such as Discover Sailing Days have improved and sailing under the program. This package includes the the accessibility and sustainability of our participation Start Crewing & Helming, Start Skippering and (optional) pathways for both youth and adults. FarEast 28R available to CSOB Members Several members have leveraged the Come Sail Our Boats program, as well as the Squadron’s other learn to sail and introductory sailing pathways, to take up Saturday Racing on the Squadron Elliott 6s, Division Yachts and Etchells. This demonstrates the success of these initiatives in encouraging additional sailing beyond the scope of the Squadron’s prescribed programs. We encourage all our members to explore the full range of sailing opportunities at the Squadron, both racing and recreational. A great example of this is the group of ladies: Margurite, Marguerite and Annmaree who came together through their participation in our weekly Ladies Sailing program. After developing their sailing skills in a social environemnt, they embarked on some additional training both with the Squadron and others, and - once they were confident - purchased an Etchells together. These ladies now sail and compete regularly in what is a quite challenging class. www.rqys.com.au Mainsheet 7
General Manager’s Update continued Our boat-owning members are also taking an increasingly active role in facilitating on-water participation in their respective classes – particularly for the youth demographic. Vice Commodore Barry Cuneo has spearheaded a Youth Development Program which aims to provide RQYS Youth Sailors with opportunities to compete on Keelboats – both Division Yachts and Etchells. Already in its early stages the program has taken on board 15 Youth Sailors, who are now learning, training and competing regularly in WAGS and on a number of yachts (including ENVY Scooters Beachball TP52, Gauntlet, and Black Dog) in the recent Myora Cup. These Development Programs complement a suite of initiatives aimed at engaging current members and new members, particularly in the youth and family demographic, including: Come Sail Our Boats & other Keelboat Training Programs on our Elliott 6s; the seamless transition of Junior, Youth and Full Membership fees according to age increments; and the seamless transition of Junior and Youth Dinghy Storage fees. This broad approach to both the accessibility of membership and participation ultimately demonstrates our commitment to supporting our membership community and facilitating the sport of sailing through a diversity of pathways. P.S. Financials: Operational performance at RQYS is epitomised in our continuous improvement in the areas of service delivery and, importantly, the financial performance of our business overall. EBITDA, the measure of our company’s operating performance, shows best ever performance, strength and stability, and steady growth. This allows us to fund major capital and maintenance projects such as the Marina & Sports Amenities Building, Sailing Office conversion to a multi-purpose space, a new RIB replacement program; as well as maintain our on-water and on-shore assets through healthy cash generation, again improving yearly. We are very pleased to note that we have fully completed the Marina 1 dredging project. We have an equally big year to look forward to. Our sailing calendar is marked by two major sailing events this year – the Brisbane to Noumea Event in June and the 2018 Etchells World Championships in October; complemented by our signature annual events such as the Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race and Musto Queensland Youth Week will see our sailors competing through winter. We also have a variety of social events and live entertainment performances from groups like The Black Sorrows in May for our members and guests to enjoy. We look forward to another great year at RQYS. 8 Mainsheet Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Autumn 2018

2017 CLUB MARINE Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race The 11th Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race proved to again be an exceptional display of the various skills and strategies required to complete such a challenging endeavor of ocean racing. Wild Oats XI finished 2016’s Brisbane to Keppel in under 17 hours, whereas this year it took her just over 20 hours to complete the same journey. The light breeze and combative tide conditions caused many competitors, including Wild Oats XI, to grind to a halt It was of course fantastic to see Squadron sailors with around the Breaksea Spit area. At a community level, this regatta and rally was about engaging people, crews and owners, and inviting them to enjoy everything the Moreton Bay multihull community has to offer: from great racing to good comradeship. At the delivery level, the event endeavoured to represent different kinds of sailing, as part of a Day Racing and Cruising program. Longer day races gave racing yachts a chance to stretch their legs, and short courses tested boat handling and strategy. For Cruisers there were courses that allowed participants to take in the Bay and provided pleasant experiences and trips in the company of like- minded sailors.
