Navigating the Autism ARD Supplement for
           Educators and Parents
Texas regulations (TAC 89.1055) require ARD/IEP committees to consider 11 strate-
gies for students with autism. Schools sometimes use the term Autism Supplement to
refer to a form that they use at ARD/IEP meetings to address these strategies. These
eleven areas must be addressed at every annual ARD. For students eligible under
§89.1040(c)(1)(Autism) of this title (relating to Eligibility Criteria), the strategies de-
scribed in paragraphs (1)-(11) of this subsection shall be considered, based on peer-
reviewed, research-based educational programming practices to the extent practicable
and, when needed, addressed in the IEP.

AND

Introduction to In-Home and Parent Training
In-home/community-based training and parent training are two of the 11 strategies on
the Commissioner's rules that districts are to consider with students who meet eligi-
bility for special education services under autism. In-Home training/parent training is
based upon a collaborative approach between school staff and home. This introducto-
ry training is for those who are relatively new to providing these services to students
with ASD. The focus will be on the sensitivity of going into the home and working
with families. Participants will review the in-home training assessment process and
sample documentation forms. We will also review the ESC Region 11-developed IH-
T/PT assessment. Finally, this session will provide an overview of goal writing and
the legal background of IHT/PT services.

All participants will be given access to the LIVE BINDER for In-Home and
Community-based Training and Parent/Family Training created by Region 11!

     and Active Learning (Make-n-Take)!

Join us on an adventure down the yellow brick road! This make-n-take ses-
sion will explore many ways literature and literacy lessons can be accommo-
dated to meet the needs of a variety of students such as autism and other
low incidence disabilities with complex learning needs.(Visual, Speech, Mo-
tor, Sensory and/or Multiple Impairments)

Participants will explore tools to assess students' literacy levels and their abil-

instruction and supports needed for student success.

Each participant will leave with their adapted book from the classic "Wizard of
Oz", other materials to support literacy instruction and a ton of ideas!

Let’s explore ways to adapt books to give ALL students opportunities to have
access to ALL literature!

Autism and the Hidden Curriculum! Social
    Interactions, Body Language, Unwritten
                    Rules...
Help is on the Way!

The "Hidden Curriculum" refers to the many social rules that are not usually taught but that
most people "just pick up" and learn by observing.

Many of the hidden curriculum topics can be humorous, but breaking one of the rules can
make a person a social outcast by their peers. (birthday parties, bathroom rules, body space,
school, social interactions, clothing, slang terms, on and on...)

One of the biggest steps for successful INCLUSION (school, community, work environments,
family) is for students to understand and learn strategies for the hidden curriculum.

Objectives:

*Identify hidden curriculum rules and the expectations embedded in social situations

*Learn some tips on how to build social success

*Explore (and leave with) some strategies for WHAT and HOW

PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE THE BOOK: THE HIDDEN CURRICULUM: UNDERSTANDING
UNSTATED RULES IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS FOR ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS (Myles,
Trautman and Schelvan)
And some VISUAL STRATEGIES to support teaching these concepts!
