August 2021 Page 3 Notes from district director From the District Director Well, I made the 3-day trip from Meridian, ID to Springfield, MO. The ride through Wyoming (Yellowstone and Teton) was beautiful. The best views of the trip. The rest of the ride was long, hot and/or raining. The weather when we arrived was also hot then raining. We did manage to have a nice time and met many people we have talked to thru Zoom calls over the past year. That was fun getting to know people personally. We also participated in the parade on Friday night. I don’t know if I have seen a longer motorcycle parade to date. The ride ended with a performance of the Central Florida Drill Team. They were very good! We made the ride home back in 2 days. It seemed a little easier making it in 2 days rather than 3 except that we got home about midnight to no air conditioning in the house. Our a/c went out some time during the week we were gone, and it was 95 degrees in the house. Record temps in Idaho for the next week while we sat without air. Finally, the a/c unit was replaced and we are cool again. We also took a ride to Challis, ID for the Idaho District/Gem State Ride-In. This was my first time getting into a hot springs pool. I did enjoy it, and we had some good company for the weekend. We hope to make the ride-in an annual event. The weather was warm during the day and cool at night. You can’t ask for much better weather for camping! Don’t forget about the Idaho District Rally August 13-15 in Kamiah. It isn’t too late to register. Please let me know if you need help finding accommodations. And, don’t forget the chili contest on Friday evening. Someone will win! It could be you! Just bring what you need to make your own special recipe, approximately a gallon or more to share and be tasted by the rally participants. It will be a people choice! We have lots of fun planned for the rally, so don’t miss out. Contact me with any questions. Lori Adkins Idaho District Director llmrobinson@yahoo.com

August 2021 Page 6 FROM DISTRICT RIDER EDUCATOR From the District Educator Our June/July adventure started with 2 12-hour days and one 13- hour day riding to Springfield, MO for the annual GWRRA Wing Ding. Lori won a plaque for being the female rider traveling the farthest to the rally, I was beat out by a hundred miles or so from someone from California. Rocky and Shirley Davis from Lewiston, ID won the plaque for the 2-up that rode the farthest. So, Idaho was well represented! Rocky and Shirley had some trike issues and ended up with a different bike for their trip home. You will have to ask them to tell the story! Later in July, we rode to Challis for the District Ride-In. We had 13 people who stayed 2 nights rather than the 1 night we planned. We enjoyed a ride on Saturday to Salmon and then roasted hot dogs, polish sausage and marshmallows around the campfire. Everyone had a nice time and enjoyed getting to know one another better. One guy rode all the way from Florida to join us. We hope to have more participation next year. The weather was not quite as hot as expected and turned out to be just about right for camping. Hope to see many more of you next time! Mike Adkins Idaho District Educator Mike Adkins District Rider Educator Michael.l.adkins1957@gmail.com
August 2021 Page 7 Notes From Idaho District Ride Coordinator GWRRA Idaho District Ride Coordinator August 2021Newsletter Well, July was like the face of the sun, but we had plenty of things to do in spite of it all. The 2021 Gem State Ride at Challis Hot Springs campground was quite the good time. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to make it with the heat and smoke being in such great supply. For those who did make it, it was an enjoyable weekend. We had an interesting ride up to Salmon and points beyond. We watched several helicopters drawing water from the river for the firefighting efforts in the area, and on the way back to Challis got caught in the prop wash of one that was hovering over the roadway. It made for an interesting few seconds. Saturday night a fire in the firepit made roasting hotdogs and toasting marshmallows the event of the evening. I’d like to mention Uncle John from the GL1800 Riders forum who rode all the way from Melbourne, Florida to join us as well as Jimmy and Bob who joined us from Utah. Three days later, we were off to the Montana District Rally in Lewistown, Montana. Now that August is upon us, less than two weeks and we’re at Kamiah for the Idaho District Rally. Ride safe everyone and keep the shiny side up. Dave Hanna, GWRRA IDRC Dave Hanna Idaho District Ride Coordinator daveuncledave@hotmail.com

August 2021 Page 9 Notes From District Treasurer Gold Wing Road Riders Association Idaho District Treasurer August 2021 District Newsletter Safety, Safety, Safety (– and other stuff) It seems that is what I talk about a lot. Sorry, but it is important to me, and I think I mention it, or aspects of it each month. And I did just last month, but then I get my August Wing World, and where there is a very sad article about one of our leaders, who just died from his injuries, months after a motorcycle accident. You can read the three pages there, as he had been a great GWRRA leader, including the Director of Riding Programs and a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Coach. We can never let down our attention to being safe. My sympathies to his family, and I hope his story will save someone else’s life. Rest in peace, Robert “Bob” Berry. I never knew you, but we shared similar interests – the enjoyment of riding the roads of America and the comradery of GWRRA. As long as I’m on Safety, and now that you have your Wing World open, read also the Safety Column, page 62, the 10 common causes of collisions, and then the Column on page 74 about wearing all your gear. I know it is sometimes hot and can be cumbersome, but do it anyway. At the Idaho District level, it is late July, meaning Hot August Nights in Kamiah is in just three weeks, August 13-15, – less time as you read this. This, too, looks to be hot, temperature wise, but we will have a great time, and, there are incredible roads to enjoy, as you arrive, while you are there, and as you return home. Please stay safe in all those activities. I look forward to seeing you there. Please stay hydrated, too, as you ride in this heat Until next month Gary Evans, Nampa, Idaho So many roads (and ice cream places), so little time
August 2021 Page 10 From the Desk of Idaho Chapter B Director Hello from Chapter B This has been a slow month for us. We had planned to do a 4th of July Parade in a small town just north of Lewiston for one of our rides. We had planned to meet and ride to the Parade. Due to illness and work issues, we were not able to make the ride. We missed holding a meeting as we were planning on doing the ride for the month for the meeting. So we have put the meeting off until August. Now we are dealing with a lot of smoke and again health issues because of the smoke. We are hoping for the smoke to clear out of the valley so that we can get some rides in. The smoke has been really thick at times. One member talked about putting a knife on the front of his bike to be able to cut the smoke. HA! We have worked on a ride schedule for the next couple of months. We will be putting it in our newsletter this month. The ice cream shops had better stock up as there is a few of them on the list for stops. We had one couple to return from Wing Ding and we look forward to hearing about their trip. We know they came home with empty pockets and smiles on their faces. We have a number of couples looking forward to the Rally this next month. We are hoping for the smoke to be gone and we can enjoy the weekend. I think we may have the winning Chile entry for the Friday night dinner. If you get to Lewiston, let us know and we can get together. Bob Cooper
August 2021 Page 11 From the Desk of Idaho Chapter E Director GWRRA Idaho Chapter E August 2021 Newsletter Hi everyone, hope this finds all of you well. July was hot (HOT), and very busy. Besides the regular meetings, where we had some old and new faces show up, we had Travis Leeman from SkyMed give a presentation to our members. Jason White from Bikers Against Bullies, joined us for breakfast, and we did a lot of riding. Speaking of Jason, please keep him and his family in your thoughts. Shortly after he joined us at our meeting, his house in Rigby caught fire and burned. It was a total lose. Fortunately, the community and his friends have come together to take care of the White family, not to mention one of their cats thought to have perished in the fire, returned home safe and sound. The 2021 Gem State Ride at Challis Hot Springs campground was great. Aside from the heat, it was an entertaining weekend. Three days later, we’re packing up to go to the Montana District Rally in Lewistown, Montana. So, here we are in August and it doesn’t look to be slowing down. Our dinner meeting at Leo’s is on the 11th, we ride to Kamiah the next morning for the Idaho District Rally, then for Leslie and I, I finally get to meet a Sister-in-law and her husband after 36 years. Breakfast at the Black Bear Diner on the 28th rounds out the month. Hope we see all of you down the road, stay safe, and keep the shiny side up. Dave and Leslie Hanna, CD, GWRRA IDE
August 2021 Page 12 From the Desk of Idaho Chapter T Director Chapter T News July 11 was the local dinner for Tribute to Fallen Soldiers. This was very near and dear to our friend Jerry Monnier who passed away earlier this Spring. The dinner paid tribute to Jerry who had ridden with the group to Washington DC 5 years in a row. He had planned to make 2021 his 6th year but unfortunately, he passed away. The ride for this year was named after Jerry and he will be mentioned at every stop along the trip. In Washington DC, the bell will be rung in his honor as well. The active members of Chapter T miss Jerry very much as he was always on the rides and activities and always was willing to lead a ride. We offer our condolences to Donna and her family. Lori & Mike Adkins Chapter T Chapter Directors llmrobinson@yahoo.com Michael.l.adkins1957@gmail.com
