PRESIDENT REPORT Joc Mannes Dear members! So here we are back in lockdown. It’s starting to feel a little too like it may be the new status quo. Let’s hope not! There are a lot of things we would all like to do that are off the table at the moment. When we get our freedoms back they will be all the more precious. Some of us will be “escaping” by planning the next big trip and/or spending to much money on the latest add-on for the truck. If breaking point (and/or liver damage) is on the horizon, a chat with with an AWDC buddy might be the solution. Thank goodness for the Olympics. I don’t know about other households but channel 7 has kept us entertained for a good few hours. Last night we stayed up till 11.00 (way past my bedtime) watching the Boomers. Well done team Australia! The commitment the participants have is inspiring. Kath and her crew on the social group are trying hard to keep some club activity alive. If you have ideas please go ahead and make them happen. Kath will get the word out and get attendees for you. As for trips hopefully we will be able to recommence at some point. It may only be August but it may be we need a plan B for the AGM and The Trophy. The Trophy, November 5/6/7, is the biggest item on the calendar. Hopefully it will run. However, Covid restrictions prior to and on the date may still be in effect. Further the low number of entries is also concerning. The fall back is that something will happen that weekend, if permitted. It may end up being a mishmash of social/4WD/camp/silly fun stuff. The important thing is not to plan that overseas trip that weekend. I am sure most of you will have received your Covid vaccine (of either sort) by now. If not it’s time for you to hit YouTube and watch Lara Bingle in the 2006 “Where the bloody hell are you?” advert. We might be in Australia but we can’t bloomin well go anywhere but work, Woolies and Dan Murphy’s. Until we all get the jab it won’t change. Just do it! Stay Safe and look after each other. WEBMASTER REPORT BRIAN SOMMERVILLE Hi All, Well with all the changes and updates and some extra free time you may have, how about exploring the AWDC web site? Check out the forums, latest trips or read the latest committee meeting minutes (oh really you say!) and even update your profile. Just login with your email and go for a wonder. Let me know if you see anything wrong or anything that needs an update. I have added some waitlist info, names and numbers, to those trips that are over subscribed. Two reasons, one, if you're not really planning to go on the trip but thought you would just put your name down, you might want to reconsider if there are other members waiting in the wings. Secondly if you’re considering putting your name down on the waitlist and spot somebody also on the waitlist, you may want to buddy up and run a second trip. Cheers Brian This months photo, “Dreaming” ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC

In the meantime enjoy the Olympics, keep in touch by phone, WhatsApp, skype, zoom or whatever means you have at your disposal. Stay safe and we look forward to catching up at meetings and on trips. Mundi Mundi Bash postponed for 2022. Organisers of the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash have made the call to move the inaugural music festival to April 2022 due to the escalation of COVID-19 in NSW. TREASURER REPORT PAUL BRENNAN Guess what, not too much happened this month - what a surprise ! We are all dreaming of that first weekend after lockdown when we can all go bush and sit around the campfire telling lockdown stories. We are officially in FY22 and the new financial year starts fresh. Financially, the club remains strong and following is an update of our position as of last month. ● Cash at bank $27,110 ● Term deposit $51,761 During the month, we received $2,562 in membership fees from 74 renewing members and 2 new members. Paid up members to the end of July was 262. There was very little in the way of outgoing cash during the month. As mentioned in my last report, your Committee is currently working on ways to utilise the Club’s excess cash. Current plans are: ● Monster raffle - to make up for missing out last year, we will have twice as many prizes with some fancy big value ones. If there is no physical meeting, then we may have an online raffle. ● Club nominated Charity - we will arrange to donate the current balance of $4,435 in August to the Charity where it will go towards much needed cancer research and local screening clinics. If there are any queries on the financials, please do not hesitate to contact me at treasurer@awdc.com.au Stay safe and until next month … Paul SWAGMAN 2015 TLOTY 2019 TREASURER 2020 TREASURER 2021 ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
DRIVER TRAINER REPORT Steve Cox Greetings, Another month goes by in lockdown but on the Facebook page is a great place to share these ideas. bright side it’s another month closer to getting out and enjoying the tracks and our trucks. Since having our car nicked, Ive been looking into some of the newer recovery gear. Soft shackle compatible Obviously we have had to cancel the August hitches, kinetic recovery rope, winch rings - all great for training weekend, so I’m sory to all those that were adding safety, reducing weight and freeing up some looking forward to putting their skills and nerve to space in the cab. the test. Once we get some certainty on the lifting of restrictions we will try to get the August group Lets see how we go at the end of the month, fingers through the training as quickly as possible. We may crossed I get to see some of you face to face again! run a few back to back weekends - we will let you know. One positive of this current lockdown has been having time to work on our rigs. Ive seen quite a few pictures from club members posting up their iso projects, learning new things and sharing new 23/24 Oct technology and tips. Keep them coming, the club NEXT (SCHEDULED) DRIVER TRAINING WEEKEND BOOKINGS: Please log onto the website, go the calendar and and book yourself in. TRIP CO-ORDINATOR REPORT Katy Cox Unfortunately, there’s not much to report this month apart from the cancellation of various trips. Brian Sommerville offered to organise a couple more day trips to the Killingworth Loop but the 3 August one has now been pushed back to 7 September. Hopefully the two groups scheduled for 29 August can still go. More details to follow, once we hear from Gladys nearer to the time. The new members’ Kanangra-Boyd NP / Dingo Dell due to to take place on 4-5 September has now opened for bookings and there are a couple of places available. Keep your fingers crossed again! The Warrumbungles Star Gazing weekend on 24-26 September is still due to take place and has one spot left. The Canberra Beerfest remains on the calendar at this stage for 20-21 November. With regard to the Mike Bell Memorial Trophy 2021, we have still not received as many registrations as we had hoped for to make all the planning worthwhile. Also, lockdown has meant that it has been very difficult to recce for the events. Whether or not we are able to run the Trophy as a full weekend remains to be seen, but keep the date free anyway (5-7 Nov). We hope to run a social event with a few fun activities, even if it doesn’t turn out to be the full-blown Trophy. Plans for Gulf / Arnhem Land and / or Simpson trip (27 August - 3 October 2022) haven’t really progressed much this month, but please get in touch with me or Paul Brennan if you’re keen. SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT KATHY SEWELL Sad to say a lot of our planned activities have had to be shelved due to this latest Sydney lockdown. In lieu of physically getting together, we’ve got some activities planned to foster social contact with club members during these strange and restricted times. On Saturday 24th July, Sandra spearheaded “Saturday Night by Firelight” which had a lovely response with members sharing photos of themselves enjoying a bev and dinner by firelight at their homes (mostly outdoors (some great looking fire pits out there), some indoors and even a gas heater from Harold). The photos and banter were shared on the Club’s Facebook page and it was great to get together virtually. It was obviously such a hit that some people, unable to attend on the 24th, joined in a week later. The next planned activity is to share an international meal (virtually) to tie in with the Olympics closing ceremony. So on Sunday 8th August, brush off your international culinary skills and cook up something to show us. Apart from photos you may also like to share the recipe and/or any story around your choice of dish. And those who don’t cook or don’t have time to, can still join in with takeaway etc. This catch up will be held through Facebook again. We’ve got some ideas for more online activities to run as this lockdown continues and I’ll give you some hints. · What’s your first planned trip once borders are open? (pref not just a weekend away.) Have a think about the towns you might go through and/or the sights you might see. · Used lockdown to get more square-eyed? Anyway, here’s some photos from Saturday Night by Firelight. Thanks, Kathy. Killingworth Day Trip 23 June, 2021 Attendees Brian Sommerville – LandCruiser 100, Doug Stewart – BT50 (Joint Trip Leaders), Eddie (Author) and Irving Underwood – Hilux, Bob and Di Robinson – Fortuner, Kevin Bauer – LandCruiser 200 Safe to say we just snuck in a trip right on the cusp the 100 series and myself and the old man in the of lockdown. A mid-week day trip to explore the likes Hilux. After a solid weekend of rain, we were of Killingworth took the definition of a ‘sick’ day to a welcoming a day of deep bog holes and large ruts, whole new level. With just a week’s notice, 5 some of which got the better of the mighty 200 four-wheel drives jumped on the idea to experience Series. The morning started at Oliver’s roadhouse a day on the tracks without the weekend warriors, in Wyong where Brian gave a brief summary of the 2-stroke hooligans, and the northern beaches day ahead and his past experiences with this mall-crawlers. We had Kevin in the mighty 200, Bob particular area (see below). and Di in the Fortuner, Doug in the BT50, Brian in ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
After a brief coffee we travelled about 40 minutes to the air down point passing through the sleepy hollow of Killingworth. The group morale was high and ready to roll and after airing down we slowly crept into an area must fourbies have seen before – the powerlines track. Finding the powerlines a good way to start the day and ease into the morning we were shortly stopped by Kev having other ideas. Kev obviously woke up wanting a challenge and a challenge he was met by - let’s just say the first hour was listening to the mighty V8 get in and out of dirt (‘in’ being more common). ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
After navigating through the various paths we could take and noticing the multiple broken snatch straps amplifying the carnage that this track had inflicted, we eventually stopped for a quick bite to eat. After lunch, the back end of the day saw a much different change in scenery and driving style. It turned into big puddles, slow crawling, tight corners and a fair few extra speed stripes. We managed to overcome a few technical routes that involved track building, spotters and concentration and finally reached the end of the road. Luckily, we were all aware that there was a possibility of hitting a dead-end so after a bit of tetris we managed to head back the way we came to find another exit. Overall, it was a great day with great company, lots of technical aspects and lots of fun bog holes (luckily with no damage along the way). All thanks goes to Brian for putting on the trip. His knowledge and direction made the day go by smoothly, I am sure most of us will be thinking of leading a Killingworth trip soon. Stay posted! ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC

With two expert vehicle mechanics on hand, Stuart from MVA and Graham ex Toyota Dealership, the air was not only thick with diesel, grease and tall stories but questions and answers too. Twenty or so eager club members all wanting to know more, the day was set never to be long enough. Scott Parkin kicked off with a session on engine basics, why SSBB is so important and what can you do if it if there’s no B. Great information on why clean air and clean fuel are the ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
essence of a well running engine. Graham continued on with an explanation of drivelines, diffs - front, rear and centre, transfer case, breathers and a great guided tour of the underneath of a 200 series. Thanks to Mike for “donating” his 200 for the day. It certainly got poked and prodded. Next up was yours truly with session on suspension. What makes a spring spring and how to keep it under control when hopping along a series of corrugations. Choices of shocks, a quick discussion on GVM and then it was lunch. While Stuart was wielding the BBQ tools, he’s good on those too, we whipped as many vehicles up on the hoist as possible. More oo’s and ah’s, and why don't I have one of those, more picking and poking and general looking around. For others it was homework time or trying your hand at puting one of those worms into a “punctured” tyre. No discussion, campfire or otherwise is complete with a lively debate on 12 volts! ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
OK back to the podium and Scott was ready to go with his 12 volt chat. Being of RFS background, Scott had no better opportunity to bring in his hose analogy, pressure aka volts, volume aka amps. Better explained with a picture, a battery and light globe or two. From there is time to hoist up some more vehicles. Lots more discussion on low points, why is that leaking?, what should I do about this? Given by the lack desire to depart I would have to rate it as another great AWDC day. Colour is very important in choosing suspension components. Thanks for the photo Liz Thanks again to Stuart from Mona Vale Automotive and Scott and Graham for giving up their day. Cheers Brian In the normal style of who wants to do the trip reports, there always seems to be a step backwards, so I asked for some photos from the students. Here’s a few responses: Sorry Brian, I was too intent on the content of the day!!! Regards Mike Burcher ______________________________________________________________________ ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
Hi Brian, No photos but happy to share my thoughts. I thought the day was wonderful and I'm delighted to have had the opportunity to learn from people with valuable skills, knowledge and years of experience in and around 4wd vehicles and trips. The information covered was so practical that it could very well be considered a mandatory adjunct to the practical driver training. We not only had an opportunity to learn about our own vehicles but to see an array of different vehicles and technology up on the hoist, which was invaluable. You simply couldn't get that sort of experience other than working in a workshop. The day was a good mix of theory and practical. There were opportunities to practice puncture repair, and we walked away with enough knowledge to use the complimentary test light. The BBQ lunch and good company topped off a very successful day where the only difficulty was winding up the event due to the participants wanting to keep going. A massive thanks to the instructors and the club for running the training. You simply can't get this sort of knowledge so conveniently and quickly. I recommend the day for all members as there really is information covered that everyone can benefit from. Thanks again Brian for putting on such a worthwhile event. Sincerely, John Hirt ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
EYRE PENINSULA (Northern) Part 2 of 3 13 - 21 May 2021 Hiltaba Nature Reserve Our trusty trip leader – Doug Stewart with his skilful sidekick, Stephanie Groves - our navigator extraordinaire were to lead, guide, inform, assist and tolerate the same bunch from Trip 1 that saw us happily travel from Port Lincoln to Coffin Bay together in their Mazda BT50 Committed counterparts were – Benedict & Turid Chan – 150 Prado, Nick Paine – Ford Ranger, Thanasi (Arthur) & Vicki Papanicolaou – Ford Ranger and James & Melissa Telfer – Ford Ranger and Authors. During our briefing at out meeting point in the lovely Streaky Bay, Doug and Steph told us about their excitement for this trip as it met their personal and long-term commitment to their passion of supporting private nature reserves around Australia. In talking about our first point of call for the trip, Hiltaba Nature Reserve, Doug notes this is a special trip for he and Steph as they are Nature Foundation members, with a love of arid areas, and have been wanting to go to Hiltaba for a long time. What a fabulous place Hiltaba Nature reserve is. Heading first to the homestead to collect our key and get an update on the park. Kevin, one of a horde of volunteers who manage and care for the reserve, warmly welcomed us, showed us through the homestead and gave us a rundown of the property with the drives and walks available. After setting up camp at Pretty Point campsite, we headed out on a late afternoon drive that allowed us to engage low range to deal with the rocky road up a hill to view the reserve from a lookout – yes very different type of scenery on this trip to the crystal-clear blue water of the Great Australian Bight in the previous trip, now surrounded by deep oranges, reds and crimsons of the soil and rocks contrasted by the blue bush and variety of greens. It is breath taking scenery. Hiltaba provided a variety of drives that kept us out each day exploring and discovery interesting things. We saw some rock holes. These are holes in the rocks from long ago. They are used by Aboriginal people, who would cover the holes with logs and rocks to protect the water from animals and maintain the water for long periods. Some low range driving was fun with a bit of spotting to guide through a few narrow bits. ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
On our way to more sights, the Great North wall, and Mount St Mungo. We stop at a viewing point on range before Mount St Mungo with the Mountain is in the distance. The North Wall Here Nick lets Ben think he has mobile phone reception (the consistent theme of Trip One and Trip Two) – But for Ben there is no reception – a big disappointment considering Ben “needs” reception all the time. A 30-minute walk to the top, and when we get there – It is a GREAT view. There is a cairn at the top - not sure what it is? It is a small group of rocks on top of a hill! Doug would not let us go past any vintage equipment including this old grader used to clear roads, a shepherd’s hut, and anything else that caught his eye. Our campsite down below. Magical spot hey! ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
An Early Morning sunrise climb up the hill above our campsite before more driving and exploring for the day. There is a banksia which is only grown on Hiltaba. Driving the dusty tracks and discovering the west side of Hiltaba, we visit the North and South waterfalls. Short stop as there is no water here. We continue on and visit a couple of wells which also includes windmills. Most of the wells carried too much salinity and were not much good for use by human. We are aiming today to keep moving and /or limiting to the stops to our original timeframes. Remembering we have Ben who is always attempting to get reception. Along the way we continue to see Blue Bush Plains which we are seeing everywhere. It can be up to 3ft tall over the land, but it doesn’t seem to go up the hills. ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
Gawler Ranges ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
Doug advising us on where we are and where we are going in the Gawler Ranges. The Famous Organ pipes, Nick showing us the way. A short walk to the Organ Pipes. It’s a good walk and the pipes are great. Both sides of the gully have pipelike rocks. Quite tranquil. Steph looking regal and as if she’s from another time. Ben the happy photographer ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
An early start to the day and the coldest we have had. The canvas around the camp is frozen as we head off to our first stop for the day, Pildappa Rock. Pildappa has a wave rock, smaller than the one in WA but still impressive. We climbed to the top sharing the space with a couple kangaroos as they sought water captured in the holes in the massive rock. ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
We visit a couple of small towns to inject some money into their economies. I am sure Minnipa and Wundippa were pleased. Onward to the Sturt Track where we are faced with some sand driving, some of which was quite difficult and challenged some newbies to the game. Four attempts at a tricky hill and the mighty Tailgate Camper wove successfully up around some deep sandy bends. Well done, James. Good fun. I like to say that Doug runs a tight ship. He sets schedules for each day and was punctual to keep us moving. So as were to leave at a not too early 9:00am, some commotion came from the campsite of Doug and Steph. Not looking ready to move off as they had discovered a small visitor in their truck who had been feasting overnight. Doug in his wisdom gave the little bugger a flick to get it (a mouse, yes only one) out of his food supply and the mouse went flying into the tent when Steph had luckily left her bag of clothes open to provide a soft and safe landing place for the little critter. It then became a hunt to clear out the bag, then tent before the day tripping could commence. Very amusing and everything considered it was still a good leave at 9:15am. Another day exploring - Stone Dam, Old Paney Homestead and Policemans Point. ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
The rock formations in the Gawler Ranges known as the Organ pipes and the Pillars are truly spectacular. Here Nick is surrounded by the exposed rhyolite. Whilst sitting around the fire tonight we play the “Name Game”. This goes on for a couple of hours with everyone participating. Apparently, Clarence of the Overflow is a famous person and Vance Joy is not!! Gawler Ranges – Mt Ive Station So today we left Gawler Ranges National Park and headed towards Mt Ive Station our last campsite for the trip. On the way we observed Lake Gairdner from the west before heading into Mt Ive Station. The lake was the result of a meteor hitting the earth 500 million years ago. It would have been 300kms in diameter when it hit. But now it’s mostly empty with great landscaped mountains. Over 150kms long and 45 kms wide with salt as thick as 1.2 metres in some places. It is used annually for Dry Lake racing and there has been used for several land speed record attempts. ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC
Turid keeping the enemy at bay as we arrive at Mt Ive Station. After we set up at Mt Ive Station we headed to Lake Gairdner for a sunset viewing, pre-dinner drinks and nibbles. The sun was hidden behind clouds although we enjoy our time on the salt lake. A great position to have a drink while watching the sunset. Quite surreal. Great spot. ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB of SYDNEY INC

Today we are doing “The Flight Path” – about a 4 hour trip with some challenging driving that can test our resilience to been thrown around in our vehicles and allow us to enjoy some challenging tracks including more pipes! Ready to drive Our last night together was spent around a lovely fire where we celebrated Steph’s upcoming 60th birthday and the success of our wonderful holiday together. Steph with her birthday cake We are now on way to Kimba. Our last stop. Morning tea at Buckleboo. Nothing here except a wheat silo. We have a coffee and onto Kimba. We are stopping at Eyre Lookout above Kimba – William Eyre. Kimba, the halfway point across Australia, between Sydney and Perth. Farewell lunch at Eileen’s Bakery in Kimba, where we all said our goodbyes and all so very much appreciated all of Doug’s hard work and sublime organisation along with Steph’s navigation allowing the rest of the group to relax and thoroughly enjoy such a wonderful trip. Submitting a trip report continued Submitting your photos Readers like to see what happens on trips. Pretty much any phone these days has the capability to take clear, sharp images of decent resolution but this can result in large file sizes, sometimes making sharing difficult. There are many cloud-based tools at your disposal to assist with sharing photos and content such as Google Drive, Google Photos, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, etc. These are all good ways to share an album of images with your fellow trip attendees or the Editor, to be able to piece them together into a trip report. A really useful free tool if you do not have a cloud service, is We Transfer - https://wetransfer.com/. This free utility lets you upload a folder of material from your computer (could be your Word report and your high-resolution images) and email it in one go. The utility does all the work for you, all you need to do is enter the recipient email (Editor), your email and upload the folder. Easy! What if I want to produce the whole report and just share it? We currently use Google Slides to complete the magazine. If you’re familiar with this, you can submit the report in that format or in Microsoft PowerPoint, which we can easily convert. Please reach out to the Editor so that they can share a PowerPoint or Google Slides template with you for completing your content within. These tools handle images far better than Microsoft Word, so there is no need to separate anything. You can simply add text boxes, images etc and the Editor can ‘clean it up’ once it’s been submitted as part of the magazine editing process. As ever, feel free to drop the Editor an email and ask any questions you may have: editor@awdc.com.au A note regarding image use Images collected are only used for the purposes of publishing in the magazine.
