About Preeclampsia Preeclampsia is an extremely common condition of pregnancy caused by high blood pressure in mothers, and is the major cause of premature birth and death of babies in the world today. Worldwide more than two million women and their babies are affected by preeclampsia every year. This devastating disease sees:- • More than seven hundred babies die from preeclampsia every day – that equates to one jumbo jet full of babies. • Many babies born prematurely or severely prematurely are left with life time issues such as cerebral palsy, deafness and blindness. • Many mothers suffer from short term health effects including stroke, kidney failure and liver rupture (60,000 die every year). • Many mothers suffer from long term health effects including stroke and long term brain damage. Preeclampsia has baffled scientists and doctors for over a hundred years and is the primary focus for a group of Australian scientists lead by Professor Annemarie Hennessy in Sydney. Professor Hennessy’s team have been supported by PEARLS (Preeclampsia Research Laboratories) for a period of eleven years. We would like to acknowledge and thank our patron Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales for her support of PEARLS Tonight’s Speaker Professor Annemarie Hennessy Special thanks to the committee members Joseph Akelian Tony Harwood Stephen Broderick Annemarie Hennessy Sharon Burns Alex Perry Amanda Davidson Campbell Robertson-Swann Lauren Harvey Special thanks also to for its sponsorship of the evening for styling tonight’s event for transportation of the artwork to the event 2
Q&A with Amanda Davidson, Chair of Pearls Preeclampsia Research Laboratories 1. What inspired you to start the charity ‘Pearls Preeclampsia Research Laboratories’? I had preeclampsia when I was pregnant with my son Harry, and after he was born I had a discussion with my doctors about the condition. It was only then that I realised how widespread and devastating preeclampsia is. I just saw that something needed to be done, so I set about doing it. The inspiration really came from my brilliant doctors, Annemarie Hennessy and Geoff Brieger. 2. From your own personal experience, what advice would you give women regarding pregnancy? Make sure that you go for your regular check ups and get your blood pressure checked. It could be high without you even knowing it as there are often no symptoms. For example I had never had high blood pressure in the past and I have had normal blood pressure since. Then listen to your doctors and do what they say. I can remember clearly the day that I was diagnosed with preeclampsia. I was a partner with a major law firm with a very busy practice and at week 30 I was told to immediately go home to bed and rest. I was in the middle of a huge mining case and it was very hard to let go of that and focus on me and the baby. Luckily I had and still have amazing clients that supported me through that time. Just do what your doctors say. Not everything in life is within your control. 3. If you could had one wish for Pearls, what would that be? My wish is that we can learn how to prevent preeclampsia. If we could do that, we would save literally millions of lives. The figures are alarming with 1 in 10 pregnancies in Australia affected, and even higher in other countries who do not have the level of obstetric care that we enjoy here in Australia. The effects of preeclampsia are devastating both for mothers and babies and are often not discussed. My second wish would be that women come out and talk about their experience with preeclampsia. With more awareness we can raise more money for our critical medical research. 4. Professor Annemarie Hennessy is an incredibly inspiring woman. All the time and research she devotes to Pearls and the Heart Research institute is ground breaking. If you had one word to describe Professor Annemarie Hennessy, what would that be? Brilliant. Annemarie is the most capable, intelligent and compassionate person I have ever known. It is wonderful to be able to work with her as well as her incredible team. Finding the cause of preeclampsia was her life’s work, and finding a way of converting her teams’ ground breaking research into a practical way of preventing preeclampsia from occurring in the future will remain her life’s work. I’ll be there along the way to help in whatever way I can. Annemarie literally saved my life and that of my gorgeous son Harry. It’s the least I can do. 3

(b) All property is sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description and PEARLS does not make any representations or warranties of any kind or nature, expressed or implied, with respect to the property and in no event shall either of them be responsible for the correctness of any descriptions of property, nor be deemed to have made, any representations or warranties of physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness, attribution, authenticity or provenance of the property. No statement in the auction catalogue or other description made at the sale, in any sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty.
