wn e-To Cap rail Ultra-T WORD FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER “As you know, it is in a very particular context that this 9th edition of the Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada is being planned. Despite the uncertainties, in September our team made the choice to continue with its efforts of maintaining hope in order to give our trail running community this first opportunity of being able to go all in in a safe and regulated environment. We believe that trail running events contribute in keeping many people active, in shape and healthy. Now that society is getting back on track, learning to live within new parameters, we consider that sports organizations also have a positive role to play whether from a social and human point of view or an economic one. Our own turn has now come to get back on our running feet with resi- lience and adaptation. That is why we have consulted many partners and have rethought together about our ways of doing things to set up a rigorous and efficient health plan. Our approach is serious and responsible, but everyone’s collaboration will be absolutely necessary in order to have a successful event. Thank you in advance for your support!” Marline Côté, General Manager 4 | Athlete guide UTHC
A WORD FROM THE MAYOR OF LA MALBAIE Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada has become an event of considerable renown that puts La Malbaie and Charlevoix on the world map to shine there brightly. Congratulations to the organizers and nu- merous volunteers. You are the proud ambassadors of our beautiful region. Michel Couturier, mayor A WORD FROM THE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT It is a pleasure to contribute to the 2020 Ultra-Trail Harricana event. Our region is brimming with magnificent, magical landscapes. Many outdoor sports enthusiasts will be able to fully take ad- vantage of this experience to surpass themselves and get chock-full of experiences. I also wish to congratulate the organization for its support of the Multiple Sclerosis cause. I wish everyone an excellent race! Ms Émilie Foster, Charlevoix-Côté-de-Beaupré MP
WORD FROM LA BOUTIQUE DU LAC One of a kind in eastern Quebec (CAN), entirely dedicated to running, La Boutique du Lac is where every athlete looking for the best gear at the best price wants to go. Christian Lachance and his staff team offer a line of product to trailrunners looking for innovation. Clothes, accessories, running shoes and «expertise» all under the same roof! Welcome to the 1020 Boulevard du Lac, Lac-Beauport! A WORD FROM DESJARDINS At Desjardins, we believe in the strength of community. For 120 years, the cooperative model applied to financial services has contributed to enriching the life of both members and communities. It is still the case today, as we are going through a pandemic that is forcing to pull together and show solidarity. We are therefore very proud to once again join forces with the 2020 edition of Ultra Trail Harricana of Canada and wish to salute the formidable UTHC team that really stands out with its determination and inventiveness within such a particular context. Health and a healthy lifestyle are important to us and we encourage all initiatives that will allow you to take advantage of it. Congratulations to all for your colossal investment in both time and energy, we wish you the very best! 6 | Athlete guide UTHC

EVENTS 125 KM – 4220 M D+ Duration: 13 h 15 to 25 h | 5 ITRA points Qualifying race for Western States et UTMB. A remote and authentic ultra race deep in the Canadian wilderness The race is a perfect mix of flowing and technical terrain. The start is right in the heart of Charlevoix’s wild backcountry. Passing several lakes, runners get the chance to encounter Canadian wildlife, including beaver, porcupine or moose. Farther along, they face four ascents: Mount Lac-à-L’Empêche and Mount Morios, with their breathtaking panoramic views of the area; Noyee mountain, with its ridge shaped like a woman floating on water; and lastly, Noire mountain, on trails specially developed by the Harricana team, that provides a beautiful view of Mont Grand-Fonds. Course overview Tips Read the detailed description of the course on our website. This will help you anticipate how to manage your energy and your effort during each section of the race. The race begins with 4 km of forest trails, a segment where you will position yourself properly before entering into a much more technical section where passing other runners will be difficult. But don’t worry – you’ll still have over 100 km to pick up the pace if you wish. Take advantage of this time to save your energy and give yourself better chances to succeed. The 125 km race is a very difficult course that’s not to be taken lightly. If you must abandon the race because you are poorly prepared, there will be major safety concerns for you, the other athletes, and the volunteers. Only well prepared, experienced athletes may participate. If you are uncertain about your ability to complete the race, do not hesitate to contact expert coaches or consult the Unis pour le sport training programs to evaluate whether your training plan will be sufficient. 8 | Athlete guide UTHC
80 KM – 2146 M D+ Duration: 7 h 30 to 15 h 30 | 3 ITRA points Qualifying race for UTMB. The UTHC 80km course is the perfect starting point for athletes who aspire to one day run the 125km event. The Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada team is pleased to announce an important change to the 80 km circuit, which will now feature a loop in the Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie National Park, rather than at the end of the race in the Mont Grand-Fonds sector. The 80 km athletes will be the only Ultra-Trail Harricana runners to dive deep into the heart of this grandiose national park, with its breathtaking views over the Hautes-Gorges valley, technical trails along the Malbaie River and crossings over SEPAQ bridges Course overview 65 KM – 1870 M D+ Duration: 5 h 40 to 11 h 30 | 3 ITRA points Qualifying race for UTMB. A course that strikes a balance between speed and technicality. The start of the race is at the Hautes-Gorges Park. You will encounter many lakes and will maybe get the chance to cross paths with some of the local Canadian fauna such as the sparrowhawk, the beaver, the porcupine or the moose. RULES AND REGULATIONS Regardless of your athletic abilities, everyone is considered an accomplished athlete and the competition is taken seriously. If an athlete does not abide by the rules and regulations of the UTHC, he could receive a warning, a time penalty or be disqualified. You can consult the complete official rules and regulations of the UTHC at harricana.info. The following is a summary of the applicable rules. In brief: f The Ultra-Trail Harricana has a zero-tolerance policy for the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PED). From when the Athlete picks up his/her race bib to end of the event, the UTHC reserves the right to conduct drug testing for any of the substances appearing on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list or to demand, 15 days before the event, that the Athlete provide such test results. f The UTHC stresses that although cannabis consumption is legal in Canada, all cannabinoids except cannabidiol (CBD), are prohibited during competition by the WADA. f Ensure your bib is worn on the front of the body and is visible at all times. f Always remain on the marked trail. f Pacers are not allowed. f The assistance of a crew is permitted for the 125 km only. The crew is permitted at the La Marmotte, Parc des Hautes-Gorges and at the Mont Grand-Fonds finish area. Crews must respect the rules that are applicable to their participation; f Always pick up your trash and dispose of it at the appropriate areas of the aid stations. f Poles are permitted for the 65 km, 80 km and 125 km distances. f Cutoff times must be respected to avoid elimination. f Mandatory equipment must be worn or carried at all times. The 2020 edition of UTHC is taking place within a context where health standards are stricter than previous editions. We ask all participants to consult the Health Guide, where they will be able to become aware of their responsibilities in upholding these standards and sign their mandatory Commitment Agreement. 10 | Athlete guide UTHC
WEATHER Charlevoix’s climate is cold and humid in September. Furthermore, temperatures and precipitations can be extremely cold in the fall, especially at high altitudes and in the backcountry. If you’re running the 125 km, expect to be exposed to winds at the different summits. It is therefore important to be vigilant to the risks of hypothermia. Seasonal averages Minimum 3°C Maximum 15°C Sunrise 5:15 am Sunset 6:08 pm Runner's code of conduct f Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. f Be responsible for their own safety and that of others. f Know, understand and follow all of the Official rules and regulations of the UTHC. f Have all of the equipment and clothing needed for the activity. f Stay on the marked trail at all times. f Leave no trace and follow the sustainable development policy. f Carry all garbage to the nearest aid station and dispose of it in the designated bins. f Avoid disturbing the flora and fauna. f Be semi-autonomous. f Respect the measures in the Health Guide. f Adopt a collaborative attitude with the volunteers. harricana.info | 11

TRAIL MARKINGS/FLAGGING There will be pink flags every 250 meters or less on all courses. There will also be mileposts counting down every kilometer (see picture above). The 125 and 65K courses use the same kilometer markings. The 80K course has an extra 20 markings identified as “80km”. The first part of the 125K is marked with small plaques and reflective pellets in order to be visible during the night. Prohibited sections or passages that are barred will be marked with square white signs with the Harricana wolf or orange paint on the ground. Athletes are responsible for being on the correct course. In case of error, athletes must backtrack and take up the course again from where they left it. Any athlete who has not completed the entire marked course must notify the organization and declare themselves as disqualified. EQUIPMENT To take part in these events, some basic materials and equipment are mandatory. However, it is important to note that the mandatory equipment is considered the absolute minimum required and that each athlete should adapt the contents of their bags to their own needs and capacities. Furthermore, the UTHC events are semi-autonomous. Semi-autonomy is defined as the capacity to be autonomous between two aid stations with respects to food, water, equipment and security. You should be able to adapt to any situation you could face between two aid stations, with the equipment you carry with you. 14 | Athlete guide UTHC

DROPPING OUT AND GETTING BACK Should you choose to drop out of the race, or be required to end the race for medical reasons, it is IMPORTANT to signal you are dropping out to the nearest aid station captain or to a first aider. Otherwise, we might have to search for you for hours unnecessarily. It is possible to drop out of a race at any aid station except La Chouette, where it is not allowed to drop out except in the case of a force majeure. The logistics of reaching this aid station make it impossible to guarantee efficient evacuation. If you are not sure you will make it to the Hautes-Gorges aid station after La Marmotte, you must drop out at La Marmotte. It is prohibited to quit the race and leave the course without signaling your dropping out to a member of the UTHC organisation. Every person dropping out the race must ensure that the race director has taken note of their bib number. The bib numbers of the racers having dropped out will then be sent to the timing and results team. Once an athlete has signaled their desire to abandon the race, they will be taken in charge by the UTHC team to ensure they will be returned to the Mont Grand-Fonds event area. Since many of the aid stations are difficult to reach, we ask that you be patient while transportation is arranged. This process can take some time and you may have to wait several minutes before being transported back to the Mont Grand-Fonds. 18 | Athlete guide UTHC
QUARTZ PROGRAM The Organization of the UTHC decided to set up the QUARTZ Event program to protect your health and contribute to doping-free sport. The QUARTZ Event program is open to all participants. It has neither the vocation nor the competence to replace anti-doping rules but aims to strengthen the medical supervision before, during and after the competition. The QUARTZ Event program is carried out in collaboration with the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), Athletes For Transparency association (AFT) and Ultra Sports Science Foundation (USS). It is managed by a Medical commission solely composed of doctors. You can declare to the Medical commission the following medical information: Any medical history and/or pathology, in particular those which may increase risks during the practice of a sport, the use of regular treatments or medication or dietary supplements at least during the 30 days prior to the start of the competition and request or use of a substance or method subject to a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) Create and complete my health space MAPPING Using the ONDAGO app, you can use your smartphone to navigate the different interactive maps of the UTHC. Even without cellular reception, you can see where you are along the race course of your choice as the application uses only your phone’s GPS. However, you must download the course maps before heading out to areas with poor cellular reception. The course maps are also available in the Maps section of this guide. SAFETY AND FIRST AID A team of professionals, aided by volunteers, will be on-site to provide emergency care to athletes in need. Every aid station will have first aid trained personnel and specialised teams will be called upon if needed. The security team is presented by the Quebec Mega Trail. The service is offered by Agence Vert Le Raid. harricana.info | 19
HEALTH RULES THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED IN THE SHUTTLES YOUR OWN TRANSPORT Preferred option. We invite all those who can have their own transportation to organize themselves accordingly, while considering that parking at the departure site is not allowed for the day. We wish to limit as much as possible the transport of participants by bus to the race start. Thank you for helping us reduce the risks by asking your family to drive you to your race start. Start of 125 km Route 381 direction Saint-Urbain poste d'accueil ZEC des Martres aux kilomètre 27. Start of 65 km and 80 km Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière Malbaie SHUTTLE BUSES Option alternative, si nécessaire. Shuttle buses represent one of the most high-risk locations for the spread of the virus within the time line of your race. We ask for your collaboration in following the volunteers’ guidelines who will place you adequately in the shuttles. You will have to : f give your name before entering a vehicle f wash your hands before boarding the bus f wear a mask or face covering for the entire length of the trip f remain silent as much as possible Eating on the bus will also be forbidden . Volunteers will be assigned aboard each bus to ensure that these health rules are followed. Thank you for your collaboration! 20 | Athlete guide UTHC
The shuttle service is reserved for athletes who are unable to organize their own transportation or use carpooling. To use a shuttle bus, each athlete must reserve a seat before August 25th by filling out the form on the following page: REGISTER FOR SHUTTLES RIDE-SHARE We have created a platform to ease ride-sharing in between participants who want to get to the start line the morning of the race. Please go to the following site to post or ask for available spots. ** A draw for one free registration for UTHC 2021 will be held among all those who will post an available carpool spot. 80 KM SHUTTLE Please note that the departure is near the campsites of the Hautes-Gorges National Park if this lodging option may be of interest to you. Option 1 06 :45 Shuttle bus leaves the Mont Grand-Fonds ski area Option 2 Bus stops at Chutes Fraser campground (500, chemin de la Vallée, La Malbaie) 07 :00 Option 3 Shuttle bus leaves Church La Malbaie parking lot (353, rue Saint Étienne, La Malbaie) The bus ride lasts approximately 45 minutes Sequence of departure Departures will be continuous from 8:00 am. As soon as you are ready, you will be able to take place on the start line with a few other competitors 2 meters away. Starts will be every 30 seconds. Timing for each athlete starts upon their passing under the start arch. A late start therefore has no impact on their race time. 65 KM SHUTTLE 6AM DEPARTURE (for those with an estimated time of less than 9.5 hours) Please note that the departure is near the campsites of the Hautes-Gorges National Park if this lodging option may be of interest to you. In this way, we will decrease the number of people present in the same spot at the same time, while increasing the fluidity over the course (fewer people needing to pass others and less waiting at aid stations). As soon as you are ready, you will be able to go to the start line with a few other participants while keeping the 2-meter distance. Departures will take place approximately every 30 seconds. harricana.info | 23
DROP BAGS Only the athletes running the 125 km event have access to a drop bag service. A The North Face bag will be given to you when you pick up your bib. You must clearly identify your TNF drop bag. The morning of the race, at the starting line, you will be able to leave the bag, identified with your name and bib number. This drop bag will also be your finish bag so you should pack a towel and change of clothes. You should also pack enough clothes and equipment to spend a second night on the course. Drop bags will be available halfway, at the parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie aid station, and again at the arrival site. (This service was supposed to be canceled according to the Health Guide, but we were able to reintegrate it following exchanges with Public Health authorities. We would invite only those people with no support crew to use the service). Participants of the 80 km and 65 km races can leave a bag with personal effects at the race start. A bag will be provided at the bib pick-up. The bag must be labelled as specified. A shuttle will bring the bag to the finish area. 24 | Athlete guide UTHC
SUPPORT CREW The assistance of a crew is permitted for the 125k only. The role of the crew is to of- fer comfort, equipment and food to their athlete. The crew is permitted only at the La Marmotte, Parc des Hautes-Gorges and at the Mont Grand-Fonds finish area. It is pro- hibited to accompany or provide food and water to another person anywhere outside of these areas. Space will be offered to support crews providing fluids, food and other mate- rial to their runner. The crews are ex- pected to be autonomous and will not have access to the food and fluids at the aid station. They must remain in the space assigned to them. Only runners wearing a visible, registered bib have access to aid station supplies. Crew members are not allowed to run any of the race course with the athlete. Since space is limited, only one car per athlete is allowed at La Marmotte aid station. When they pick up their bibs, athletes will receive a sticker to give to the support crew. The sticker numbers will be noted as the cars arrive. Crew members must follow the access schedule to ease traffic on the road that will also be used by athletes during the race. Please note that the road leading to this refueling station is bumpy and is not recommended for low floor vehicles. See map. The SEPAQ Hautes-Gorges aid station is accessible by car (paved road). Carpooling is also encouraged to avoid traffic congestion. Plan an hour's drive from La Marmotte to get to the Hautes-Gorges and one hour to get to Mont Grand-Fonds. See map. All vehicles will be sent back to Mont Grand-Fonds. See map. To ensure easy access to the aid stations, download the ONDAGO app for your smart phone. The interactive maps of the UTHC will show you the way to the aid stations. Visit our web site for more information about Support crews. Members of the support team are limited to family members or close friends, that is; those living at the same address or including only one additional address, and who have registered in advance on the support teams list via the PLEDGE FORM before August 20. harricana.info | 25
PACERS Pacers are not permitted at any of the UTHC races. Being accompanied during all or part of the race by a person who is not registered to run the race is forbidden. A 30-minute penalty may be applied for receiving assistance outside the designated areas. See race rules SERVICES AT AID STATIONS Please note there will be absolutely no glasses available at any of the aid stations. You must therefore bring a glass or goblet with you for all events. If needed, cups will be available for purchase at the La Boutique du Lac kiosk in the exhibitor’s zone and during bib distribution in La Malbaie on the Friday. Each refueling station has a toilet facility, except the Morios and Montage Noire stations, where it is impossible to transport toilet infrastructures. 26 | Athlete guide UTHC

CUT OFF TIMES The cut off times are shown in the pace charts below. We ask that you respect these times and the personnel who must enforce them. Volunteers do not have authority on site, they are doing their job and are simply following the authority and directives of the race director. These times are realistic and are based on the results from past years. Because the events are held deep in the backcountry, we must ensure that the safety systems in place are not compromised. At any time, the medical team on-site could require you to abandon the race should they determine your safety is at risk. An analysis of your physical situation by the medical staff onsite could be required at the Parc des Hautes-Gorges aid station to determine whether you may continue the race or not. harricana.info | 29

AWARDS AND CEREMONIES An awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 13th at 10:00 am at the Malbaie library. All athletes who placed top three in each course will be required to go to the ceremony to get their prize. Only one person per family will be able to accompany the winner. MEDALS Exchange your medal for a souvenir A souvenir medal will be given to all the finishers. Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada is an environmentally responsible event, and wishes to reduce the production of medals that often end up at the bottom of our drawers. This year, when you cross the finish line, you’ll have the option of exchange your medal for a reusable beer Eco-Cup or a $5 voucher towards the Harricana boutique. The medals collected will be transformed into keychains or fridge magnets. The idea is also to get athletes to consider the attachment they really have to their participation medal. How does it work? f Receive your medal at the finish line and get a picture with it if you wish. f Make your way to the UTHC bar or boutique to trade your medal in for a reusable beer Eco-Cup or a $5 voucher to use at the boutique (valid during the event weekend only) 32 | guide de l'athlète UTHC
FINISHER GIFT All athletes who finish the 125 km race within the 25-hour cutoff time will receive an engraved 125 km Opinel knife. Volunteers will be responsible for distributing this prize when athletes cross the finish line. Opinel knives will not be sent by mail if they are forgotten. AFTER RACE MEAL Athletes will be served a hot, gourmet meal after their race. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. See complete menu BEER MICROBRASSERIE CHARLEVOIX All athletes are entitled to a MicroBrasserie Charlevoix beer or a refreshing glass of non-alcoholic PUR Kombucha. To claim your beverage, make your way to the main tent outside the Mont Grand-Fonds chalet.
SUSTAINABLE RACE From it's very beginning, Ultra-Trail Harricana has taken an environmentally responsible approach in almost all of its actions and activities. These values guide our decision-making process and have helped the event stand out in several ways in the areas of social, economic and environmental development over the last several years. While this philosophy has always been an informal part of the organizational culture, our team wanted to ensure the continuity and coherence of our actions. In 2017, we decided to send a clear, consistent message to all our team members, partners, collaborators, suppliers as well as our runners, with a global, long-term vision aiming to structure and consolidate the steps that still need to be taken to continue reducing the environmental impacts of Événements Harricana’s projects. Our commitment to sustainable development Waste management f Provide bins to collect compostable and recyclable materials at the main site and at the eight aid stations, and encourage runners to use them correctly. f Prohibit runners from throwing garbage on the ground during the run under penalty of disqualification. f Gradually incorporate washable dishware for the post-race athlete meal. f Give remaining food to a local organization (the Service alimentaire et aide budgétaire de Charlevoix-Est) to redistribute to people in need. Reducing the event's footprint f Give out virtual swag bags. Instead of receiving printed materials, runners will be able to download partner promotions and ads on the web. f Make event medals out of biodegradable Quebec-sourced wood. f Limit the distribution of promotional items, especially those that don’t last long or that have limited value. f Sell t-shirts so that only people who want them get them. f Cut down on printed materials. Most communication is done on the web through the digital newsletter, social media, website, etc. f Borrow or rent materials from other organizations rather than buying them or having them custom-made for us. Likewise, we will lend out our materials and share our expertise with other organizations. f No longer hand out drinking cups at the races. Runners must have their own reusable cups/bottles. f Offer runners low-flow showers with biodegradable soap in a specific tent. f Use reusable containers to deliver water to the aid stations. f When possible, car travel will be reduced for the working team, and Communauto services will be promoted.nous devons d’accorder à la préservation de l’environnement; 34 | Athlete guide UTHC harricana.info | 34
Education, information and training f Through our communications, educate and inform runners and partners on the importance of preserving the environment and the efforts we should all be making toward that goal. f Encourage ride-sharing to the event site (via newsletter, website, social media, etc.). Social development f Provide free registration to the young members of the Motivaction Jeunesse group and to representatives and members of other non-profits. f Organize the sale of used sports items for runners. f Support charitable or social causes including the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. f Provide our employees paid leave to volunteer for the causes of their choice (e.g. Fondation En Cœur). f Participate in the annual cleanup of the Traversée de Charlevoix trails. Economic development f Highlight local products, services and companies. f Hold the event outside of high-tourist season to encourage off-season visits to tourist attractions in the Charlevoix region. f Highlight the Mont Grand-Fonds ski centre and bring visibility to the mountain. Environmentally responsible ethics f Choose organic and certified fair-trade foods whenever possible. f Write and implement a sustainable development policy to guide our organizational decisions.
