About Stephen Duren, Juror I was born in 1948 and reared in the amber light of northern California. 1968-72: U.S.Navy ( Vietnam / Cuba / Italy). After my separation from the Navy I remained in Europe for a brief period of time, where I stumbled upon an exhibition of paintings by Van Gogh. This was akin to a religious experience for me at 23. 1972-77: My “formal” art education happened at San Francisco Art Institute (BFA) and Sacramento State University (MA). As one of San Francisco’s first licensed street artists, I covered my tuition through the sales of my drawings to tourists. (I’ve got stories.) Much of my time was spent off campus working directly from nature. For many years the textures and patterns of the northern California landscape were the foundation of my painting vocabulary. In 1978 I moved to West Michigan where I taught art for six years in local colleges (can anyone really teach art?) before settling into my full-time vocation as a painter. My early inspiration came from 19th century European artists, including painters from the Barbizon School and the Impressionists. In my figurative interiors from the 90’s one can easily see my love for the French “intimist” painter, Pierre Bonnard. My American influences have included Albert P. Ryder, Milton Avery, George Inness and the mystical, tonal Cal- ifornia paintings of Gottardo Piazzoni. I also admire many of the paintings of Wolf Kahn and Piazzoni’s grand- son, Russell Chatham. I am especially drawn to the California light, compositions and searching, palimpsest painting surfaces of Richard Diebenkorn. More recently I have been excited by the large, imaginative paintings of Peter Doig. Much of my work remains semi-abstract, but I am often lured away from my studio by the desire to paint direct- ly from nature, a call I have answered since I was 15. A local glossy once wrote that I am rejoicing in the right- ness of created things, a reference perhaps to God. However, I am not your conventional theist. I am in awe of the universe, especially as it is manifest in nature, so I might best be described as a Pantheist. My wife, Victoria Peabody (BFA, MAT), is passionate about all aspects of early childhood education, from the progressive teaching methods of programs like Reggio Emilia to the design of learning tools, classrooms, and even public bathrooms. Her aesthetic sense is more progressive than my own, and she keeps me a little closer to the “edge” than I am naturally inclined to go. This is a good thing, since my tendency is to find a comfortable spot and not want to move. Victoria has accompanied me on many of my painting trips, entering sketches and notes into her journals de- scribing our excursions through Michigan, northern California, Italy and France as “...pleasant days suspended in quiet nature.”

JUROR’S STATEMENT It was a pleasure to jury this show, and I thank all of the artists for their generosity. I offer the following observations on some of the many works that stood out to me.* It is always a pleasure to view my friend Jim Johnson’s charming and masterfully handled watercolors. I was particularly happy that he in- cluded a piece that caused me to laugh out loud (Cloudy With a Chance of Bricks). Equally masterful are the pleinair paintings of Kathleen Kalinowski. I look forward to seeing where she next lands as she continues to push the envelope. Dennis O’Mara’s painting of a Leelanau Barn avoids cliché through the use of surprising, unexpected color. A refreshing change from the more Stephen Duren, Juror traditional postcard color palette. One of the more psychologically powerful entries was Leon Lou’s watercolor portrait titled Paul. I was happily surprised at the quality of photographs in this show. A haunting paradox exists in the images of Rus Barneveld whose Barn Scene might convey a saccharin sentimentality, were it not for the surreal mystery that pervades it. A similar compelling enigma exists in the photos of Evie Carrier. The photographs of Stone Peng, Henri Droski, Diane Hayworth, and Steve Scarborough touched that side of me that responds to the power of well-placed protagonists in an austere, poetic environment. The simplest images can be the strongest, but they are also the most difficult to pull off. Mary Reusch’s paintings reveal a sweet and sensuous relationship with color and surface. (I want to know the story behind her London Tower Wall.) Mary Serra Veneklase’s small Franciscan Fieldscape is a fine example of sprezzatura. Free, expressive wet-into- wet painting always calls for risk and courage—two key ingredients to discovery. The result in this case is a tiny piece of poetry. Doug Klemm’s paintings are some of the most strikingly individualistic landscapes in the show. Their forceful, exciting compositions and strong sense of space are transporting. (I am respecting Doug’s request to be recused from any awards, considering his role as the organizer of this show.) *I hope that my observations will be read with the understanding that I make them without having actually viewed the art in person. Some works will have been disadvantaged by their digital reproduction, while other pieces may have experienced the reverse. Grand Valley Artists is grateful to Stephen for his willingness to be our juror for this show.
