Collection Study Room | Artist in Residence
Rockhampton Museum of Art is offering three opportunities for
regional artists to undertake an Artist in Residence in our Collection
Study Room. This residency will allow access to Rockhampton
Museum of Art’s nationally significant collection, collection
database and arts library. This residency enables a guest artist to
work in a new environment, away from the restrictions and
pressures of everyday life. It aims to provide the time and space to
develop work and creatively explore new ideas.

The Collection Study Room is dedicated to showcasing the
Rockhampton Museum of Art Collection. Throughout the calendar
year the programing will focus on different elements of the
Collection. ‘Our Artists’ is the first iteration and spans a 4 week
period. The purpose of ‘Our Artists’ is to facilitate engagement and
communication between artists, arts workers, and the public;
through a residency.

At this time, the Collection Study Room will be provided as a space
for artists to develop their practice and extend their learning based
on Collection works. During the residency, the artist in residence
will have direct access to Collection works (pending availability).

Suggested open studio hours for the Collection Study Room are
between 10am and 12pm daily with other times restricted or open
studio as preferred by the artist in residence. Allowing members of
the public to access the temporary learning studio of an artist
during this period will enhance public knowledge and support of
the Arts.

The space will be used as an open research-style studio where
artists can deliver talks and information sessions about their
residency, as well as informal conversations with the public.

Rockhampton Museum of Art
In 2022 Rockhampton Museum of Art will open its doors for the first
time, following a major capital infrastructure project. Rockhampton
Museum of Art is a place of community and gathering, where
connections are forged, skills acquired, a love of art nurtured and
history celebrated. Delivering services to the broader Central
Queensland region, Rockhampton Museum of Art aims to increase
exposure to art and culture through a range of innovative and
participatory onsite and offsite activities.

As a regional centre, Rockhampton Museum of Art will strive to
provide the community with access to practicing artists and arts
organisations, to ignite arts and culture as an interest area for
future generations. It will challenge the notion of ‘regional’ and sit
purposely out of line with a deliberate curated program that
develops new audiences.

Our Building
The floor space of Rockhampton Museum of Art has increased from
650m² to 4711m², featuring two large flexible gallery spaces, three
multipurpose education spaces, permanent collection storage, an
industry standard loading dock, a restaurant/café, retail store as
well as a purpose built Collection Study Room where specific
requested works can be displayed for public viewing. The
Collection Study Room allows for never before seen access to
Rockhampton Museum of Art Collection.

The redevelopment will exceed international contemporary public
art museum industry standards and will provide a variety of
programmable spaces to meet community and arts sector
demands. This includes space for the permanent collection, in-
house curated and touring exhibitions, large-scale art commissions
and an education suite, plus flexible spaces for corporate hire and
other key events and activities.

Our Location
Positioned at the center of Rockhampton’s CBD, Rockhampton
Museum of Art is located along Quay Street. The building is located
next to the heritage listed Customs House and will overlook Tunuba
(Fitzroy River). There are multiple points of entry, and the central
location will ensure Rockhampton Museum of Art building is
physically accessible to both travelling and local visitors. Flexibility
of design has been built into the facilities through inclusion of
multipurpose spaces, compartmentalized climate control systems,
24-hour educational suite access, as well as ergonomic furniture,
fittings and equipment.

Rockhampton Museum of Art will be accessible to the whole
community, and the design considers people with special access
needs, including young children, elderly and people with
disabilities. Rockhampton Museum of Art’s layout, entries,
acoustics, furniture, fixtures, floor coverings and lighting have been
developed with consideration to diverse audience requirements.
Opportunities for creativity are foundational to Rockhampton
Museum of Art. The building features several sites for activation
projects: including newly commissioned artworks, collaborative
community programs, arts events and performances, and
corporate hire.
